MESSAGE FROM CHAAG (TORONTO CHAPTER)

On behalf of the Toronto Chapter of the Central High AlumniAssociation of Guyana (CHAAG) it gives me great pleasureto congratulate our fellow Alumni of the New York Chapter onthe occasion of the fourth International Reunion of CentralHigh Alumni. While this is your first time hosting the event, Ican assure you that the experience gained, will be immeasura-ble and will serve you in good stead for the future. Our Cana-dian contingent who will be travelling to the event, are excitedand look forward to the Meet and Greet on Friday where theycan reminisce with other alumni, some of whom they have notseen in years.

The Toronto Chapter has existed for over twenty-five years andwas the first and only Alumni Chapter for years until New York

and most recently Guyana formed a Chapter. The creation of these new Chapters has allowed us tobridge the generational gap among Central alumni and at the same time, educates them on the richhistory of Central High School and its founder J.C. Luck.

Our work is never complete and we look forward to future collaborations with you in New Yorkand anywhere across the globe where Central Alumni are found.

I wish you all the very best and look forward to many more reunions in the years to come and muchsuccess in all your endeavours.

FOUNDERS MESSAGE

othing could be more gratifying than being part of an organization that seeks to keep the name of Central High alive in the USA.

The existence of this organization has its origin in a desire articulated to us by Chryslyn Fraser (Class of ’69) to get together with other Centralites in an informal setting ‘to Reconnect and Relive the Glorious Memories of Central High’.

Thus the seed for convening an informal gathering was sown. This required a lot of legwork but fortunately we were supported by several well-intentioned persons like Jackie Yhap who offered her residence for our first social gathering. This event was so successful that attendees requested that follow up contact be pursued.

In keeping with these wishes, a small group of us undertook to meet regularly. There again, another Centralite Claire Norville, stepped in and offered her residence for our meeting place. Arising out of these encounters was the expressed desire to form an organization to assist the students of our alma mater to realize their full potential.

Today, we are extremely proud and heartened by the strides CHAAG has made over the 7 years of its existence – from an ad hoc informal gathering of Centralites to a full-fledged organization with goals and aspirations.

It is therefore our hope that this inaugural reunion would provide us with a pool of resources from which we could draw upon to carry out the tasks we have undertaken and, ultimately, ensure the continued existence and growth of our organization.

Dear Alumni and Friends,

As a Central High School Graduate of the Class of ’77, my involvement in the current New York Chapter of Central High Alumni Association of Guyana (CHAAG) started in 2009 as a member. Subsequently, in 2010 I was elected President.

As we gather to “Re-connect and Re-live the Glorious Memories of Central,” I am humbled and honored to welcome each and every one of you to our Chapter’s first Reunion to be held here in the “Big Apple”. The fact that so many of you have made this sentimental journey, many of you coming from great distances, is phenomenal and is indicative of how proud you are of your CHS experience, and how much you care about our Alma Mater.

As presiding President of our Association, I would like to take this opportunity to highlight some of our accomplishments so far.

In keeping with our Mission to contribute to the success of our Alma Mater and at the same time, ensure its continuity, we have worked diligently over the past 5 years to host annual events in order to raise funds. These funds are used to assist students of CHS to realize their full potential by ensuring that their physical environment is conducive to learning and that they are provided with the aides necessary to achieve this objective. Thus, from the proceeds garnered from these activities, we have been able to donate equipment for the science laboratory, a photocopier, maps, atlases and other items and contribute to sport activities. In addition to this, we have been able to provide a 4-year Scholarship to a student attending the University of Guyana. There is no doubt that your partnership and generosity have been the cornerstone of our success. It would therefore be remiss of me not to publicly acknowledge the support we have received from our Alumni and Friends in support of our endeavors.

It is important to note, however, that as a non-profit organization, we are also obligated to contribute locally to the community in which we live. In order to fulfill this obligation, we are in the process of examining areas particularly those in which our Alumni in New York could also benefit.

In light of these commitments, it is imperative that CHAAG continues to hold fundraising events. This is why we depend on our Alumni and Friends to support these activities. It is only through support and partnership that we would be able to realize the goal we have set ourselves.

I therefore wish to issue a fervent appeal to each and every one of you to get involved in our Association – in any way possible. Our Association is always open to new members. For those who have the time and commitment to volunteer service, the possibilities for becoming involved in our Association are endless – serving on our Executive Board, or on our sub committees are only some of the ways. Whatever vehicle you choose to get involved is welcome as we believe that it is only by working together we can make more things possible. This is aptly captured in the following quote by Henry Ford -

“Coming together is a beginning,

keeping together is progress,

staying together is success”

Of course, if you are unable to volunteer or attend any of our events at any time, we hope you will choose to put in a good word for our Alma Mater!

Once again, I wish to express deep appreciation for your partnership and support as I endeavor to continue to work diligently, along with other members to achieve our goals and to make Central High School the very best High School.

BIOGRAPHY OF IVOR J. BENJAMIN, M.D., FACC, FAHA

Nations take considerable pride in their native sons and daughters, who having travelled to and excelled in distant shores, credit much of their success to the foundations firmly planted within the family’s commitment to excellence through education.

One of Guyana’s own, Dr. Ivor James Benjamin is among the leading cardiovascular specialists in the United States, but his journey is no less from these native shores. Born in Georgetown, the eldest son of five children for Ivan and Edna Benjamin of Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, Ivor received his primary school education at St. Mary’s-Ye-Virgin Elementary School and Graham’s Hall Moravian Primary Schools. Following the path blazed by his older sister, Edris, Ivor next attended Central High School (CHS) in Georgetown and was awarded the first Scottish Flower Lodge scholarship. Ivor’s younger brother, Ivan Jr., also attended CHS while his younger sister, Loleta, and his youngest brother, Jim, attended

St. Joseph’s and primary school, respectively. Ivor enjoyed football (i.e., soccer) and cricket but excelled at cycling especially during intramural competitions. After graduation, he briefly joined the labor force as a pupil teacher at Lodge Government School.

In November 1972, Ivan Sr. and Edna Benjamin and their family left Guyana for the United States, initially settling in Brooklyn, New York City. For the first time in years, the family was reunited with Ivor’s older sister, Edris, who had preceded the family to the US. Both Ivan and Edna Benjamin devoted the rest of their natural lives to the fulfillment of the children’s dreams and aspirations through higher education and the pursuit of academic excellence.

Dr. Benjamin received his B.A.(1978) graduating with honors from the Thomas Hunter Honors Program at Hunter College of the City University of New York. He received the Doctorate of Medicine (M.D.) from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1982. He completed a Residency in Internal Medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital, Yale University School of Medicine in 1985, and a Cardiology Fellowship at the Cardiovascular Institute, Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center, University of Chicago in 1988. Dr. Benjamin studied molecular cardiology at Duke University Medical Center (1988-1990) before he completed an AHA-Bugher Fellowship in Molecular Cardiology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas (‘90-92). After joining the faculty at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, he was promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine with tenure in 2002, and he served as Professor of Medicine and Education Program Coordinator of the Donald Reynolds Cardiovascular Center at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX from 2002 – 2003. A recipient of the Established Investigator award from the American Heart Association, Dr. Benjamin has been continuously funded from both private foundations and the National Institutes of Health for over 20 years.

As an author of 100 original articles, reviews and book chapters, Dr. Benjamin is the current Editor- n-Chief of Andreoli and Carpenter’s Cecils Essentials of Medicine, 9th Edition—the major medical textbook used by medical students and allied health professionals. In addition to his leadership of the American Heart Association, he has served as an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology. Accordingly, he has accrued substantial publishing experience as an author, editor, and educator who remains actively engaged in innovative ways for communication with eReaders and video content, while providing transformative learning experiences. Scientists like Dr. Benjamin are also trying to understand how to improve the recovery of muscle cells, numbering in the billions, which are damaged after a heart attack. For his research, Dr. Benjamin has been recognized internationally as an authority on special molecules, termed ‘heat shock proteins,’ which serve as early alarm systems that can ward off further danger. Dr. Benjamin and colleagues have performed seminal studies to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying ischemic cardioprotection and inheritable cardiomyopathy, both forms of heart disease that afflict millions of individuals worldwide.

In 1999, Dr. Benjamin was elected into the American Society of Clinical Investigation and, in 2005, into the Association of American Physicians. Dr. Benjamin has been active in several medical societies including service as President of the Dallas Division of Texas Affiliate, American Heart Association (2001-2002), a member of the Task Force on Council Resources, American Heart Association (1998-present), the Chair of the Scientific Publishing Committee (2005-2007), American Heart Association (2001-2005), and Vice President, Council for Basic Cardiovascular Sciences, American Heart Association (2003-2004). He has served in a number of capacities in national organizations including Chair, NHLBI Board of Scientific Counselors (2006-2007).

Dr. Benjamin envisions that the vitality and adaptability of the biomedical clinical and academic enterprises lie at the intersections of the basic, translational, and clinical sciences. Recently, he has had the opportunity to pursue new challenges with a year long sabbatical spent both at the MGH/Harvard Stem Cell Institute and the Gladstone Institute for Cardiovascular Research with Drs. Ken Chien and Deepak Srivastava, respectively. This has allowed him more time to focus on his recent 2009 NIH Director’s Pioneer Award and his interest in growing a clinical translational research program in Heart Failure and Stem Cell Regeneration at the University of Utah. The ability to establish induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell lines, from human skin biopsy or blood samples, provides indefinite sources of donor iPSderived cell lines that can give rise to differentiated cells mimicking cardiomyocytes and related cell types. Technological platforms such as iPSCs are ideally suited for disease modeling and potential cell-based interventions.

At the Cardiovascular Center of Froedtert Hospital & Medical College of Wisconsin (FH-MCW), the principal mission is to improve cardiovascular health in Southeast Wisconsin and beyond through innovative, cutting-edge research and cost-efficient health care delivery. On May 01, 2013, Dr. Benjamin became the inaugural Chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and Director of the Cardiovascular Center at MCW, and, in his capacity as Vice Chair for Translational Research, serves as the Department of Medicine’s liaison to the Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin (CTSI).

Dr. Benjamin and his wife, Carol, have been married for 26 years and have three children, Lawrence, Alexander and Charis.

BACKGROUND

In 2007, Lynette Bagot and Cheryl Rolston got together and organized an informal gathering of Centralites to reconnect and share past experiences. During this event, there was general consensus that a subsequent meeting of Centralites be held for the purpose of forming a group to assist our Alma Mater in meeting the needs of its students and staff. As word got around, the group expanded and eventually evolved into the formal organization that exists today.

OUR MISSION

To establish a network of alumni of Central High School in order to assist the school in sustain-ing and promoting its growth and development by utilizing our membership capabilities.

WHAT WE HAVE ACCOMPLISHED TOGETHER SO FAR

• Held several fundraising activities (BBQs and Christmas Parties) to garner funds to satisfy the School’s ‘Needs List’

• Donated a photocopier, projector, laminated maps , atlases and other items to the school• Ratified the Bylaws• Granted a scholarship to one (1) student to attend University of Guyana

WHAT WE PLAN TO ACCOMPLISH TOGETHER IN THE FUTURE

• Equipt the school’s computer lab.• Supply books and equipment for the library and the Home Economics Department.• Collaborate with the Guyana and Toronto Chapters to maintain a scholarship fund to be of-

ficially launched at the Reunion.• Identify and support our local community in New York by contributing to charitable organi-

zations.• Intensify efforts to encourage Alumni to become active members of the Organization and

support our fundraising ventures.• Publish a periodic newsletter in order to keep Alumni involved in our activities

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR, PLANNING COMMITTEE

T wo years ago, the Planning Committee was tasked with the responsibility of creating a Reunion experience especially for you, our fellow Centralites. Thus, our guiding principle was to ensure that our Inaugural Reunion is affordable and memorable while providing the

opportunity for Centralites to ‘Re-connect and Re-live the Glorious Memories of Central High’. The choice of the two venues for the events was specifically identified to create the ambiance within which this objective could be realized. It is therefore with a deep sense of pride and satisfaction that I can attest to the fact that the Committee did accomplish its mission.

However, as frequently happens with planning such events, this achievement was not without its challenges. From an original group of twelve persons, the planning arrangements were eventually undertaken by a ‘Group of 8’. Nonetheless, without losing sight of our goal, we committed ourselves to the task, often at great sacrifice to our personal lives. This group worked tirelessly, giving their time and talents to make this event possible in spite of the numerous obstacles, frustrations and disagreements. In this regard, I could not have asked for a more dedicated group of Centralites to join me in executing such a monumental undertaking.

Our commitment was fueled by the recognition that this is a significant milestone in the life of our organization and a moment worth celebrating. Thus, we worked feverishly to reach out to our fellow alumni – we sent emails, posted letters, telephoned, encouraged, cajoled and sometimes applied less subtle methods of persuasion, all with the aim of getting as many Centralites as possible to attend. The fact that the Reunion is actually taking place is testimony to our steadfastness and our unwavering belief that our Alma Mater and its students deserve no less. Of course, we could not have accomplished this without the valuable input of several persons. The guidance and support of our Executive Board and the Presidents of the Toronto and Guyana Chapters, and those Centralites who shared their comments, ideas, time and resources were critical to our effort.

Now that we have discharged our responsibility and have joined the ranks of our other two Alumni Chapters – Toronto and Guyana, I have no doubt that the lessons learned and the experience gained throughout this process, would serve as a lasting memory to all of us and contribute to the success of any activities that our organization may pursue in the future.

LETTER FROM 2011 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDEE

HOLLINA ALFREDHello everyone,

I am Hollina Alfred, the 2011 Central High School Alumni Scholarship holder. I count it a divine favor to receive an honor of this magnitude, since I am one of the least fortunate, coming from a deprived community (Albouystown) and a family of five children of which I am the eldest.

Before I was awarded the CHS scholarship, I was on the verge of applying for a Cuban Scholarship but thanks to the New York Alumni Association, I was granted the opportunity to study in the comfort of my home country and at the same time retain the support and presence of my family.

In addition to the huge financial relief that I have obtained, the Alumni has played an essential part in framing my future, by granting me the chance to pursue the career of my choice. Many persons do not get the opportunity to make their dream a reality but today I am on the path of realizing mine.

I am a second year medical student at the University of Guyana and I am making a tremendous impact on my community. I am living my dream and enjoying every second of it.

Nevertheless, I need to give honor to whom it is due. This was all made possible by the generosity of the members of the Alumni Association. No amount of words can fully express my gratitude for their help and continued support. A special thanks is extended to the President of the Association, Mr. Ray Hendricks, who has been a mentor, a guide and most of all a tower of support.

Once again thank you for allowing me to realize my dream.

LAUNCH OF SCHOLARSHIP FUNDWhile we have already granted a scholarship to a former Central High School student to attend the University of Guyana, CHAAG is pleased to officially announce the launch of its Scholarship Fund.

In collaboration with the Guyana Chapter, CHAAG New York will be offering one (1) scholarship annually to Central High School students.

The purpose of the Scholarship is to assist applicants in pursuit of their post secondary/high school education at a University, College or Technical Institute.

In order to ensure the viability of the Fund, Alumni are hereby invited to subscribe to the Fund directly and also to support our fundraising activities in every way possible.

CENTRALITES MEET FOR YET ANOTHER REUNION.

Central High School is 85 YEARS old this year!

This is our school, our very own “Central.” It is that place where it all started: a place of warm, sweet memories of a special time, of special friendships, and where fledgling dreams took flight into sterling achievement, if not great-ness.

Throughout the years, the honor roll and call of her children-that would be you-has made her proud. In every field of endeavour, whether academics or sports, Central has produced individuals of a higher caliber; individuals who have gone on to become citizens of the world and noteworthy, if not dominant in their fields. Oh, there were the bigger and brighter names, but still many speak with respect, sometimes awe, that “Central was a good school.” There can be no greater acclamation.

She was not only a “good school”, she was ours, and the same can be said for the likes of all those who started out there and went onward to Camp Road and elsewhere, which institutions reaped the benefit and glory. Think of this: medicine, politics, law, engineering, journalism, writing, business, sciences, just to name a few and there are central alumni in countless numbers. Say cricket-Test cricket-tennis, track and field, netball, football, singing and dancing, and there are the children, now adults that passed through her doors.

Nowadays, Central still produces a solid crop of graduates year after year. But her face is wrinkled, her surroundings decrepit albeit unacceptable. She needs a helping hand, her spirits can do with a massive infusion of energy and interest. The call is for all of her children-wherever they may be to remember her glory days, to remember what she meant then to each of them then and to you personally.

In this her 85th year, let us recall the good times, let us cherish her in our hearts, and let us do whatever we can to keep the light of this home, this mother, this magic burning before us always.

Enjoy yourselves as you reminisce on the Good Old Days. HAPPY REUNION!

CONGRATULATIONS!It is with profound satisfaction that I take this opportunity, on behalf of the Guyana Chapter of the Central High school alumni corpus, to extend congratulations to the New York Chapter and more specifically to the Reunion Committee for the hosting of Reunion 2014 from July 4-5. Your commitment to so do must be seen as building blocks establishing in the long run a vibrant Central High Movement, and in the immediate to deliver on our unwritten agreement to have biennial Reunions, this being the second of that which begun in 2012 in Georgetown, Guyana.

It is impossible to think that anyone worked harder, longer, or with more dedication than all of you on the Committee! From your appropriately chosen theme –‘Reconnecting to Relive Glorious Memories’ to your very friendly registration link, launched the renewal of dormant friendships and heightened the anticipation of the reunion celebration.

I believe the inhibitions of the school environment, age, maturity, self esteem, among others caused many to have never shared with anyone before personal feelings, thus many it seemed left High School with the thought we were alone in our feelings, but the Reunion experience has the propensity to make it now appear that we were on common ground.

I have no doubt, therefore, that your Chapter headed by the astute and ebullient Ray Hendricks will deliver on your theme and cause old memories to come alive and help new ones be forged. In fact, I predict that those in attendance will feel like 12, 13, 14 15, 16 and even 17 all over again. I have no doubt, also, that the hugs and kisses will last a long, long time, as will the warm feelings taken from the reunion. Life gives us brief moments with each other but sometimes in those brief moments we get memories that last a life time.

O n behalf of the Journal Committee I would like to extend a warm welcome to all

alumni who are attending CHAAG’s Inaugural Reunion (2014) celebration in New

York.

It is our hope that you will keep this journal as a momentum, to look back and remember the

wonderful years you spent at Central High School, our Alma Mater, our nourishing mother, where

we were formally educated and developed into productive and contributing members of society.
