TASK 2: Name the ‘quake? Justify – Grade B
TASK 3:Key facts/L3 information:
Should Christchurch Rebuild and Expand?
• Identify the factors that might influence the decision.
• Explain the factors that might influence the decision.
• Evaluate the factors and make a decision.
Big picture:Geographical thinkers
“Active viewing”
Source analysis – enquiry workers.
Analysis – use of evidence.
Earthquakes have the capability to cause significant damage. This depends on:
Their magnitude (the amount of energy released by the earthquake, which effects the energy of the seismic waves and the damage they can cause, whereby the larger the magnitude, the greater the energy and hence amplitude of seismic waves and the more damage they may potentially cause)The proximity of the epicentre to populated or urban areas (the closer the earthquake epicentre, the more energy will be retained by the earthquake waves and the greater the damage)The local ground conditions (seismic waves have a much lower amplitude in hard rock than in soft ground making the damage caused by seismic waves much greater in soft grounds. Also liquefaction may occur in soft ground where there is pore water which acts to significantly reduce bearing capacity and makes building collapse much more likely)The duration of the earthquake. The longer the duration, the greater the damage that may be caused. The construction techniques employed in the area and the enforcement of applicable construction codes or standards will affect how destructive an earthquake is
Should Christchurch rebuild and expand?L/O 1: Identify the factors that might influence the decision.
Factors to be considered?
Availability of undamaged housing
Economic condition
Disaster management system
Local land use
Building practicesAvailability of financing
Part 1: “Active viewing”Key considerations:Figures?
How does NZ achieve preparedness?
Learning objective two – Explaining the factors.
Physical considerations Human considerations
Learning objective 2 – Gathering the evidence
Focus – Enquiry work
Yes we should rebuild/expand No we shouldn’t
Learning objective 2 – Using the evidence - consolidation.
Christchurch should not look to rebuild and expand along the areas defined as the newly discovered fault zone. Discuss. (15 marks)
Learning objective three - Evaluation
Best practice?
