GROWTH OF TECHNOLOGY

• 1984/1995: Age of desktop PC’s

• With GUI computers became personal.

• 2008: Age of laptops

• Global laptop shipments exceeded desktops.

• 2010: Age of Mobilism

• Smartphone sales passed PC sales.

• Mobile devices (phones, tablets) continue to dominate

IPAD OR GENERIC TABLET?• iPhone ownership among teens continues to grow

61% of teens own an iPhone (up from 55% in Fall 2013) 67% of teens expect their next phone to be an iPhone

• Tablet ownership continues to grow60% of teens own one (2/3 iPad + 18% in 6 months)

• Consider the time required to support these devices

• Fractured/Accommodating• BYOD, 1:1 or BYOSD?

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN AN APP

• Easy to understand and learn (low threshold)

• Easy for students to use (low friction), • appealing but avoids overusing distracting frills, stressors

• Helps students make sense of mathematical concepts • (e.g., using dynamic visual models), avoids focus only on rote

memorization.

• Allow you to adjust the settings to meet individual needs.

• Focus on mastery before fluency• avoid apps that focus too much on speed.

MORE HINTS -GOOD APPS SHOULD...

have multiple uses• support discussion, exploration, strategy sharing,

consolidation, fluency building, assessment, etc.• support assessment

• allow you to review student progress and upload that information to your computer to support assessment.

• have supporting materials • (in app or on a website) to guide classroom and individual

use.• support learning in many ways.

• Not just consolidation – engage students in communicating, representing, creating, exploring, presenting, etc.

Strategies for Classroom Use

• Even one iPad can be useful!

• Whole class exploration & discussion - strategies

• Have students work together - share, challenge, cooperate, support, etc.

• Plan for differentiation and set goals
