Recommendations for Tim Chung
Transcript of Recommendations for Tim Chung
November 4, 2014 To Whom It May Concern: I am writing this letter of recommendation at the request of Mr. Tim Chung. I have known Tim for approximately three years in my capacity as a marketing professor at the University of Missouri. Tim was a student in my principles of marketing honors class and marketing research class. Based on the work that Tim did in both classes, I consider him to be an exemplary student who possesses a strong desire to learn and a willingness to fully utilize his abilities. Tim readily accepts challenges and never hesitates to perform the work that is required of him. During class discussions, I knew I could count on Tim to offer many insightful comments that would enrich the discussion. In both classes, Tim’s performance placed him in the top 10% of the class. In addition to being a hard and conscientious worker, Tim is a very thoughtful, kind, and considerate individual who possesses excellent interpersonal communication skills. He is also an effective team player as evidenced by the outstanding work he did on the group projects he was assigned to work on in both classes. The peer evaluations Tim received from his fellow group members were all very positive. Tim also served as a student host for the Making Me Marketable Conference I organize each year for the College of Business. As a host, Tim works with the business professionals who serve as panelists for the conference sessions. Tim received high praise from the panelists for his work. They noted that he was diligent in meeting their needs, personable and professional. Tim has been an excellent representative for the College as a host and it is why he was asked to serve for three years (most hosts serve for one year). If you would like additional information on Mr. Chung, please contact me via email at [email protected] or by phone at 573-882-7552. Thank you. Sincerely, John Bennett Associate Teaching Professor 324 Cornell Hall Department of Marketing College of Business University of Missouri Columbia, MO 65211

December 7, 2014 Re: Letter of Recommendation for Timothy Chung It gives me great pleasure to write this letter of reference on behalf of Timothy Chung, who is currently an undergraduate student in the Robert J. Trulaske College of Business at our university with a concentration in marketing and a minor in entrepreneurship. Timothy is currently taking my e-Marketing class. I have thus had the opportunity to observe his performance and professional development over the last three and half months. I got to know Timothy in my e-Marketing class which is specifically designed to help students understand how to develop effective marketing strategies and to implement coherent Internet marketing programs. The course covers various marketing strategies using digital technology such as search engine marketing, social media marketing, mobile marketing, and online branding & video marketing as well as online marketing performance measurements. He works hard to achieve his goals and has strong passion for learning. Timothy showed an excellent grasp of the class materials by actively participating in class discussions and applying class-room knowledge to real-world business situations. Also, I am not surprised that he is at the top of my class with a clear A+. My class requires a group project, which allowed me to observe Timothy in a group setting. He works well as a part of a team and can function as a group leader when required. He shows excellent communication skills and gets along with other students. Through the group project, I was amazed by the fact that his critical thinking and analytical abilities were unrivalled by his peers. The project’s mission was to select one company that employs a mobile marketing strategy and to analyze it, while providing recommendations at the end. His team chose Craigslist, which I thought was a challenging but interesting one to. He and his team nicely presented the company’s current mobile strategies, critically evaluated the firm’s weakness and strength, and provided solid recommendations for future growth. Particularly, I was very impressed by their creative recommendations. While none of the other teams considered firm culture and business philosophy, Tim and his team came up with actionable mobile-marketing plans that were aligned with Craigslist’s company culture and business philosophy. As such, it has been a genuine pleasure for me to have him in my class.

Performance Evaluation from Shelter Insurance Companies
I asked the director of my department, immediate supervisor, and closest colleague to choose from a list of questions to evaluate my performance as a summer intern at Shelter Insurance Companies. Marc Deiter Director of Alternate Channels [email protected] 573-214-4572 1. How would you rate my work at the company? Tim - you performed very well during your internship. Of course there is a lot of learning during and internship and that is expected. As time went on and you were more aware of the Direct Channel effort and Shelter you began to assert yourself by asking questions that moved the conversations forward and were insightful. You also showed initiative by going beyond what was asked of you on your assignments. Your research and presentations were very professional and on point. 2. How would you rate my office demeanor, spirit or attitude? Helpful; meet or exceeded expectations on your assignments; professional 3. Is there anything about my style that you think I should know? After an interaction with me, give me
one or two words that come to your mind. Confidence in giving you an assignment and knowing that it will be done appropriately and done well. 4. What is the impression I leave with those with whom I come in contact? You have seen a number of
interns over the years here, how would you compare me with them? Am I above average, at average or below average?
I have had five interns at Shelter and you have been the best one. You comprehend many new and unknown items and produce a deliverable that is high quality and on point. I would, with confidence, rate your performance as above average. 5. Can you offer some examples that affected your answer? Previous interns have asked questions and made comments in meetings that were not appropriate and/or way off target. You did not do that. Also, previous interns had many follow-up questions and sometimes produced work that was not expected - you did not do that. 6. Can you think of the times when I made you proud, or my work made you proud? Perhaps a time I
did an exceptionally good job? The presentations including the research that went into them along with the way they were organized - very thoughtful, logical, and at the correct level for the audience. 7. Can you think of any times when I disappointed you or the company by my work or attitude? Please
be specific if you can.
No disappointments at all. The only feedback is the same as what we discussed - feel free to be more assertive with your questions and thoughts. 8. So we can end the interview on a positive note, what words of encouragement do you have as I move
forward in my career? Continue to focus on doing good work as you have. Your professional demeanor, initiative, and work ethic are wonderful. We're glad to have you continue as part of the team. ________________________________________________________________________ Diana Hufstedler Business Analyst, Alternate Channels [email protected] 573-214-4568
1. How would you rate my work at the company? During your internship you assisted with research, benchmarking and competitive analysis for a major corporate expansion project here at Shelter insurance! You accepted a lot of responsibility, worked independently and executed all assignments quickly and with very low error rate. I would rate your work as excellent and we are excited to have you back as a part-time employee during your next semester at school.
2. How would you rate my office demeanor, spirit or attitude? Timothy, you are very professional, have a positive can-do attitude and you often surprise with your initiative. It is refreshing to meet a young individual who is not only very intelligent, but also ambitious, enthusiastic, and incredibly perceptive. 3. You have seen a number of interns over the years here, how would you compare me with them? Am I
above average, at average or below average? I used to work for a higher education institution so over the years I have supervised many interns and student workers. Timothy, you rate well above average relevant to them not only in quality & quantity of work, but also in professionalism and ability to understand complex concepts, ecommerce practices and digital marketing interactions. When given an assignment, you deliver timely, high quality work every time with little or no supervision. 4. So we can end the interview on a positive note, what words of encouragement do you have as I move
forward in my career? Just keep feeding your curiosity, learning and growing. You have the unique ability to observe your peers, coworkers and supervisors and not only learn from them, but also challenge common practices and help others grow too. Use that ability in a constructive manner and you will go far in your career!
Georgie Fanning Business Analyst, Alternate Channels [email protected] (573) 214-4961 1. Is there anything about my style that you think I should know? When I first started here you seemed very quiet and didn't speak up much. When you did speak up it was always a well-though-out response or question that helped move the conversation forward. Your comments made people think which is always a good thing. You have great ideas and see weaknesses in strategies that others do not which is a valuable quality. I would suggest to you that you continue to speak up and feel confident that your viewpoints and position on issues are valuable to the team. Listening is also a very important skill and I can tell when you are in the room that you are "in the room." You seem to absorb and understand things, which will be a very useful skill in the future and will help you in getting a deeper understanding of any organization that you work for. 2. You have seen a number of interns over the years here, how would you compare me with them? Am
I above average, at average or below average? I have supervised marketing interns in my previous life and as I have said to you before there are a few things that stuck out to me very quickly when I started here. You asked to be assigned things and took on even the least exciting tasks with energy and enthusiasm. In other words you injected yourself into the organization instead of just showing up for credits. You also started a revolution here with Prezi by introducing the team to its ability to take presentations to the next level. It is always good to add value to the organization and if you see something that makes you wonder why we do something a certain way speak up like you have been. Always strive to provide solutions to the problems you see and your equity with any company will grow. 3. So we can end the interview on a positive note, what words of encouragement do you have as I move
forward in my career? Choose a career that makes you passionate. Our time on this earth is limited and if you chase other people's dreams, you will just be another rat in the race. Take risks and have courage to follow your intuition and passion and you will go far. Speak up, be strong in your convictions and do not let other's opinions drown you out. I read a quote once that seems to fit here "Be a voice not an echo." Good luck!
Adam Leong Ministry Team Leader InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA 706 Mount Vernon Ave Columbia, MO 65201 573-‐219-‐0888 To Whom It May Concern; It is with great pleasure that I recommend Tim Chung as a potential candidate for a position within your organization. I believe that Tim represents the small percentage of young individuals who enjoys learning, and puts in the necessary work to be successful in all his endeavors. I have known Tim for 3 years in two different capacities. He has been a faithful member of our fellowship since his Freshman year where he has served in a number of leadership roles. He has also been a housemate of my wife and me this past year and will be a housemate again this upcoming year. As a member of Asian Christian Fellowship (ACF) he has been a small group leader where his role included preparing bible studies, planning socials, following up with member students, and teaching a younger student how to lead small groups. He has also served as our Worship Leader, coordinating rehearsals with the worship team, picking song sets for our weekly meetings, and playing both guitar and hand drums on a weekly basis. Finally, Tim has served as our Large Group coordinator, making sure that every part of our weekly meeting (teaching, dinner, worship, announcements, and setup/cleanup) had someone in charge. Tim has served in each of those roles admirably, showing a dedication to the job while also having a vision for the future and looking to expand each role beyond its current sphere of influence. My wife and I have also had the pleasure of living with Tim for the past year. He is a wonderful roommate. He is clean, quiet, responsible, and engages in housemate life. We couldn’t have asked for a better situation. Through the 3 years that I have known him, Tim has exhibited a commitment to excellence, an ability to balance all his different priorities, an even keel and cool head, and a love for people that allows him to take risks. I believe that your organization would be well blessed to add him in the same way that ACF has been blessed to have him as a part of our fellowship. Sincerely,
Adam Leong
