seated on his royal throne, he shall have a copy of this Teaching written for him on a scroll by the levitical priests” (Deuteronomy 17:18). That teaching emphasizes a limitation of the King’s power. The Torah warns against the abuse of power and exposes the flaws and arrogance of corrupt leaders.

We can learn a lot about what makes a good or bad leader by reviewing the relevant Biblical and Rabbinic texts. Therefore, on Saturday evening, June 11 (7pm), we will review classic passages about the good and bad Kings and leaders as a part of our Erev Shavuot, Tikkun Leil program.

It is an ancient custom for Jews to study on the night of the Biblical Festival of Shavuot. It is called “z’man matan Torateinu, the season of our receiving the Torah.” It is a time to review selected texts and engage in lively and meaningful discussion. So come and share your thoughts.

Naturally, there will be no partisan politicking, but there will be plenty of ice cream!

Chag Shavuot Sameiach!

Rabbi Rick Rheins

Mel Brooks’ hilarious classic History of the World Part 1 includes his memorable portrayal of the swaggering and vain Louis XIV gloating, “It’s good to be the King.” With a sly smile and a wink that revealed his lust for power, possessions and, well, just pure lust, Brooks’ King was a petulant boor. Yes, it’s good to be the King. But is the King (or President) good for us?

With the nation in full swing for the upcoming elections we are preparing for the beginning of a new President and his/her administration. While the election of a new President is always a major change, it is not overly dramatic to say that this year’s election will really be---um, interesting!?

In the Talmud it is written: “As the generation, so the leader; as the leader, so the generation.” It is clearly time to reflect on the character and qualities of our potential leaders– as those qualities will speak volumes both about them and us. Fortunately, the Hebrew Bible and Rabbinic literature are filled with wise insights about the leaders. Kings and other leaders are evaluated with extraordinary candor. Some are praised for brave and thoughtful actions. Others are pilloried for their shameful misdeeds and arrogance. Indeed, studying the Torah was one of the mitzvot assigned specifically for the Kings of Israel, as it is written: “When he is

Why is it customary to eat dairy products on the Festival of Shavuot?

There are many different explanations for the custom of eating dairy products on Shavuot, the Festival of Weeks. In the Biblical book, The Song of Songs, we find the phrase (4:11), “Honey and milk shall be under your tongue,” which many commentators understood to be a reference to Torah study (cf. Rashi and Sforno’s commentary to this verse). Since Shavuot is the Festival that celebrates z’man matan Torateinu (the time of the giving of our Torah), it is natural to eat foods that symbolize the sweet nourishment of Torah.

Rabbi Solomon Ganzfried in his Kitzur Shulchan Arukh (103.7) records another reason for eating chalav or milk on Shavuot. He notes that in the Book of Numbers (28:26) we find the instruction:

On the day of the first fruits, when you bring an

offering of new grain to Adonai on your Festival of Weeks (minchah chadash, la-Adonai b-shavuot-tei-khem) you shall observe a sacred assembly.

The first Hebrew letters of the phrase “new grain to Adonai on your Festival of Weeks” are: mem, chet, lamed, bet, which spell m’chalav, “from milk.”

Chalav, the Hebrew word for milk, has the numerical equivalent of 40 according to the tradition of Gematria. Forty is, of course, the number of days Moses spent on Mount Sinai when he received the Torah.

While there are many different reasons for eating dairy on Shavuot, they all remind us that just as the nutritional value of milk is essential for human growth and health, so too the inspired wisdom of Torah is a vital part of our Jewish spiritual and intellectual development.

On behalf of the entire Temple Sinai community we extend a huge thank you to Lisa Thorner, Program Director, and Evelinda Urman, event chair, for the outstanding work they contributed to our Annual Event in May. A hard working committee consisting of Jessica Adler, Grace Bach, Loretta Cawelti, Sherri Diamond, Terry Goldfarb, Vicki Goldman, Marion Goldstein, Joan Kehl, Marty Meitus, Judie Schwartz, Judy Schwartz, Andrea Tenenbaum, and Linda Weinstein deserve our thanks for contributing to this wonderfully successful event. The silent and live auction, entertainment, food, and “FUN” made the evening memorable. The evening was well thought out and spoke of good planning and a careful eye to detail. I would once again like to congratulate our honorees: Marshall Abrahams, Rob Abramson, Larry Jacobson, Michael Melun, and Nate Mendel. Our gratitude to you remains endless. Thank you to everyone in attendance for making our 2016 Annual Event a fun extravaganza. When talent and hard work meet together - the result is success!

A year ago I assumed the role of President of Temple Sinai. It has been a wonderful experience. I have met and worked with so many dedicated people. Learning how the Temple functions has been a great opportunity for me. I recently attended a four-day seminar in Atlanta with 125 other Temple Presidents from around the country. I not only acquired great new leadership tools, but I met and quickly came to value a cadre of dedicated, smart and determined Jewish lay leaders who I will call on for their best thinking and support in years to come. Our connection with one another remains strong for we all share a partnership, we support one another and we continue to discuss ongoing opportunities. I am forever grateful that I was given the chance to attend this Seminar underwritten for 18 years by Honey and Rudi Scheidt.

As this year’s term ends we need to thank the following board members who are leaving as trustees. Their dedication and commitment are truly appreciated. David Freider, Amy Rittenberg, Ed Schenkein, Allan Striker and Michelle Weinraub have displayed extraordinary qualities to our Board of Trustees. We wish them much success in future Temple endeavors. Our debts of gratitude to each of them. Todah Rabah!

We welcome new leadership to the board this next term 2016-2017: Vicki Goldman, Jeff Lavenhar, Barb Lettes, Mark Meyer, Gene Rosenthall, Bruce Tully and Frank Urman. What a great contribution to serve as a member of the leadership team that helps Temple Sinai. We applaud your willingness to give your time, your talents and yourself as a board member.

The goodwill of those we serve is the foundation of our success! It is a real pleasure to continue to express my ongoing thank yous. My wish for all of you is that the upcoming summer months are filled with enjoyment, safe travels, and as always, happiness!

Monday, May 2nd, around 7.45 pm, we are finishing the recitation of the silent amidah, and I give him the cue: it’s time for him to play. He had a full day at school, but he looks ready; he takes this with a great deal of respect and responsibility. Out of the silence, this gorgeous melody pours out of his violin...or maybe directly from his heart: Schindler’s List theme song. It is a moving song, and he plays it exquisitely, but as I look into the congregation, that is not the only reason why they are captivated. The congregation is captivated by this young man, by his presence, by the depth in his eyes while he plays, by his level of concentration and how he’s able to be exactly there, present with heart and mind. He finishes the piece. I place my hands on his forehead, kiss him gently and say “God bless you, Teddy.”

Edward “Teddy” Meyer is 13 years old, he plays violin and is a member of TMG, our Teen Music Group. This past May, TMG was part of Temple Sinai’s Yom HaShoah evening service and program. They didn’t just participate, they absolutely made the evening; they led the Maariv service, they sang special tribute songs, Edward Meyer played violin and Sam Schenkein played guitar. I’m proud of our Teen Music Group; not only because they sound really good, and they are fun to be with! I’m proud of them because of their commitment and what they give to our community. In this day and age, our children have countless options of hobbies and after school-activities, but these kids and their parents decided to make life in community priority.

I want to express my gratitude to our TMG and Youth Choir members and their parents for giving themselves to Temple Sinai, and to my amazing choir co-leaders Dan Yolles and Megan O’Connor. It has been an amazing year, and I look forward to more friendship and songs in the year to come!

Our staff has the great honor of working with incredible volunteers who are dedicated and committed to Temple Sinai in various ways. We can never do enough to appreciate the long hours and tireless effort of those who are willing to share their skills.

It is difficult, but each year we select one exceptional volunteer to recognize as Temple Sinai’s Volunteer of the Year. This year we are proud to announce that Ed Schenkein has been bestowed with this honor.

Ed has served as the Treasurer of the Board of Trustees for the past four years. He has been a truly incredible and devoted volunteer, consistently since he took office. Ed has not only determination to make a difference, but he insists on nothing less than the best for our congregation. He cares passionately about our Temple and has donated countless hours of his professional services to help ensure our financial success.

Ed was also instrumental in the Building Our Future campaign. He worked with the Building Committee to analyze the budget, track expenses, ensure proper

accounting and finally help to secure funding with a financial institution. He took this responsibility very seriously and shared his knowledge and wisdom when securing our loan.

All of this and he never has complained about working too hard, too many hours or asked for anything in return.

When Ed is not working for and on behalf of our congregation, he is a CPA for SingerLewak, a top-100 accounting firm in the United States. Prior to that, Ed was partner in StarkSchenkein for over 20 years. He has countless affiliations and has worked on numerous boards. Ed has been married to Judy Bloomberg Schenkein, a Pediatrician in Castle Rock for 19 years. Together they have raised two wonderful teens, Sarah who is 18 and Sam who is 15.

We hope that you will join us as we pay tribute and share our gratitude to Ed for his hard work on Friday, June 24th at Shabbat Services.

FYI As you are aware we have the privilege of enjoying a wonderful Oneg following services on every Friday

evening. For many years we have asked our members to sponsor the Onegs and graciously they have agreed. For over 20 years, we have left the rates the same for this sponsorship. As much as we try to keep costs down, continuing with this tradition and making it enjoyable for our members has been difficult for the same fee. Beginning August 1st, the fee for sponsorship of an Oneg will be $250. All B’nei Mitzvah families will be required to provide this fee as a part of their child’s simchah.

This price includes: linens, paper goods, catering staff set-up and clean-up, herring, coffee, tea, punch and the essentials for Kiddush including grape juice and challah for everyone. Additionally, we ask every sponsor to provide up to 30 dozen sweets in the fall/winter/spring or fruit and veggies in the summer. We will also be offering to provide the sweets for you if you choose, for an additional fee.

As you are hopefully aware, sponsoring an Oneg is a wonderful tribute to someone you care about. As a parent of B’nei Mitzvah, this is a fabulous way to thank the congregation for welcoming your child to the congregation as an adult.

If you are interested in sponsoring an Oneg in honor of a loved one’s simchah, special birthday or anniversary or simply out of respect for your fellow members, please contact Diana Kaplan at [email protected].

In the Congregation

I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to members of the Jewish Interest-Free Loan Committee (JIFLCO).

At the beginning of this year, I lost my primary source of income. Shortly thereafter, one major incident after another occurred, all within a short time span. A few examples include a completely unexpected, urgent health issue, a car that needed major repairs, and other, more personal events that necessitated using all of my savings. A couple of months later, I found myself in a very scary situation: I had no money to pay my rent, health insurance premium, medications and other necessities. I am estranged from my family and honestly, I was so embarrassed about my financial predicament (I still am), I did not want my friends to know; so, I did not ask them for help.

I contacted Temple Sinai to see if they might be able to help. I spoke with Administrator Loretta Cawelti on the phone and explained my circumstances. She could not say for sure whether I would be approved for a loan by the Committee or not. Amazingly, the next day, she left a message telling me the good news that I received approval from the JIFLCO for a loan.

I was not only incredibly relieved that the committee approved a loan for me, I did not expect such an attentive, quick response - despite my immediate need for help.

A couple of days later, I met at the Temple to

sign the loan papers. I was nervous, worrying that I might be judged or somehow made to feel “less than” because of my predicament. Well, that did not happen; in fact, Loretta was completely nonjudgmental, and treated me with genuine empathy, kindness and understanding.

While it’s true that I am still treading water financially, the loan prevented me from sinking. I was able to pay rent (avoiding eviction), medications, additional car repairs, etc.

For me, the JIFLCOs generosity is not just about money. It’s the mission behind the money that is truly most important, which is a genuine concern for the person’s physical, psychological and spiritual well-being. The money, it seems to me, is a means to this end. I find this inspiring and moving. Imagine if everyone in the world was like this? What a different world we would live in!

So, I want the Committee members to know that your thoughtful support has certainly made a positive difference for me, not only in the more surface, apparent ways, but also in many intangible - hopefully long-lasting - emotional and spiritual ways.

I will be happy to repay the money, but I can’t imagine how I will be able to repay your kindness.

Most sincerely,Rachel

Small Increase For Dues 2016-17 This year the Temple Sinai Board of Trustees and your Temple staff have work diligently to balance the

operating budget. Many members of the staffing team spent hours evaluating programs, cutting unessential items, prioritizing goals, strategizing on fundraising and setting goals for keeping costs at a minimum.

As with many businesses and organizations, the cost of living and the cost of operation go hand in hand. Everything increases from utilities, to supplies and vendor services. We also had to recognize that our hard working staff needs to feel appreciated by receiving some sort of salary increase that meets the cost of living increase.

Therefore, the Board approved a 3% increase beginning July 1, 2016. We are grateful to all of our members who accept this increase and understand that maintaining our buildings, programs, services and staff comes with a cost. Your support is always appreciated.

Our students have worked very hard this year to sharpen their Hebrew skills. Our 3rd grade classes have begun to master the letters and vowels and our 4th - 6th grade students have progressed through our self-paced Mitkadem program. There are several things you can do to help keep your kids going this summer and avoid the need to start over in the fall. Just a few minutes each week can make a HUGE difference!

• Use the many on-line tools available. We have apps for the Aleph Bet, and our Mitkadem program is all on-line for your kid’s to use. If you are interested in setting up your student with our digital programs, please contact the Religious School office.• Have your children read the kiddush and motzi during Shabbat at your home, not just sing it from memory.• Visit us for Shabbat services and have your child point along to the words in the prayers during services.• Join us for our drop-in Hebrew sessions every other week. This is a chance to come and review or keep moving ahead with the assistance of our great summer staff. We will meet on Wednesdays from 4:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Watch your email for dates and RSVP information. This is a free program for all of our incoming 4th-7th grade students.

If you have been to Temple recently, you probably noticed the massive amount of fencing all along Hampden and the west side of the parking lot. This feels like a huge milestone--there's no going back now! The contract with JHL Construction and the loan documents have all been signed and permits are in the works. The construction trailer was delivered and they will now start prepping the area.

We will be posting pictures and updates regularly on our Facebook page as the project progresses. If you "Like" us, you will get the most up-to-date information.

Go to: https://www.facebook.com/SinaiDenver or use this QR code:

Please note that access to Temple from Hampden will be closed for the duration of the project. Please enter from Glencoe Street.

We would NOT have reached this time if we did not have such a generous, supportive congregation. On behalf of the Board, the BOF Committee and the Staff, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
