Dear Sir,

Watching language unfold in children is a wonder to see. Children use gestures, movements, facial

expressions, sounds and finally recognizable words to affect other people’s behavior. Later, they use their

developing semantics and syntax to formulate sentences and to connect ideas. Children soon learn that they

can communicate- that there are reasons to talk, things to talk about, and people to talk with. Bathed in

communication, the child reaps brain stimulation, emotional development and language growth.

Children who do not develop language through experiences of interacting with others and

exploring their environments demand the attention of many professionals. Parents and caregivers may need

direction for early enrichment experiences with their children. Increasingly, Speech-Language Pathologists

are working with at-risk toddlers, nonverbal individuals, individuals with autism and Asperger’s syndrome,

and children who struggle with dyslexia or inadequate language and behavioural issues.

In the Indian context, there is growing demand for therapeutic aids for children who need to

develop speech and language. E-kids, a unique, wonderful computer program developed by Mr.Fredy has

been proven to be an effective tool for learning various concepts in normal school children. It was clinically

used for children with communication disorders (3 Autism Spectrum Disorder, 1 at-risk for Learning

Disability, 2 Hearing Impairment and 2 Specific Language Impairment) for a period of around 6 months at

Dawning Hope Speech-Language Therapy centre, Ernakulam, Kerala.

E-Kids was found to be very effective, interactive, interesting and rewarding for these differently-

abled children who benefitted more through use of audio-visual aids. The major linguistic areas which

improved with use of E-Kids are: Vocabulary, Prepositions, Semantic associations, Sequencing and

Narrative skills, attention span, sitting behaviour, phonics, auditory memory and visual discrimination.

Furthermore, providing the child with the ability to make choices, providing self-feedback and

reinforcement were other positive aspects of the program. The use of E-kids along with language therapy

and enriched environment would stimulate a young child’s brain and language. The program could be

adapted further for individualized use with children with special needs.

Hoping that one day all the children whether they are differently-abled or not, have access to the latest aids

and technologies for their positive learning, growth and overall development!
