The Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ) has recently made available for license 1,044 line km of digitally reconstructed data for Morant, Formigas and Albatross areas of Eastern Jamaica. The data was acquired in 1983 by Sefel as part of a Canada International assistance project and is the only seismic data available for this region.

The data is available by licence, through PCJ’s UK Agent (MDOIL Limited [email protected]) for a fee of US$7,500 for a single user with a 50% discount for partners.

The data, to include the georeferenced shotpoint map and corrected navigation is available on a CD or can be downloaded from MDOIL's ftp site on payment of the license fee.

The island of Jamaica and multiple shallow banks are separated by NW-SE to EW trending deeps. Water depths are generally less than 1,500 metres with the 100 metre isobath outlining the carbonate banks and their upper slopes. Of the detached banks, Morant Key is about 230 km2

2)(89 miles in area (Meyerhoff and Krieg, 1977).

The images below show a collage of images from NASA shuttle photographs, illustrating the form of the present day banks. Most notable are the white coloured strips developed along the margins of the banks that face the prevailing waves and winds. These are coral reefs and their erosion products.

Lower Nicaragua Rise.

Water depths of 1,500 to 3,000 metres dominate this region. In the far north east (Morant Keys area), water depths are less than 500 metres.

Formigas Bank

This sector is associated with the passive margin at the eastern end of the Cayman Trough and is dominated by sets of NNE-SSW elongated tilted fault blocks created in the early stages of trough development. These are expressed in the bathymetry and continue in ever deepening water into the Cayman sector. Much of the early subsurface information comes from

single channel seismic surveys with low penetration, and it is entirely possible that older, but still prospective, sediments exist at depth. The digitization of Sefel/PCIA lines in this area has helped with the visualization of the deeper structure however, eventually new data will be required within the areas of interest to determine the character of these older depocentres if present.

Morant Basin

The gravity and magnetic data of this area off the eastern end of Jamaica imply a heavily faulted and possibly intruded region with magmatic activity. This is confirmed by the Sefel/PCIA seismic, which shows that early Tertiary rifting was followed by strong inversion, new rifting and in some cases by recently renewed inversion. Significant section is present. The tectonic complexity is related to the eastern prolongation of the onshore Plantain Garden Fault (the Enriquillo Fault of Haiti). This line of active tectonism is illustrated by Leroy et al. (1996). East-west Sefel/PCIA offshore lines south of the Blue Mountains suggest that the core of these mountains consists of a thrust stack dipping to either the south or, more probably, the north. A detailed study of these lines should also allow an excellent tie to the young tectonics onshore.

Morant South

This sector is defined largely on the basis of Bouguer gravity, which indicates an area of relatively thick crust lying to the south-east of the escarpment that bounds the Pedro Bank. The play potential in the north-west, along the escarpment trend is identical to that in the Jamaica Plain sector.

The general stratigraphy of Jamaica comprises a thick Tertiary sequence divided in two. The uppermost section is dominated by carbonates. The lower section (synrift section) is also mainly carbonate, but becomes more clastic at depth and laterally in places. The Tertiary unconformably overlies a thick Cretaceous shale/ siltstone section

Recent petroleum geochemical analysis has indicated the presence of both terrestrially and marine derived oils. The origin of the thermogenic gases remains

uncertain.

The marine oils are interpreted to be derived from a marl dominated source rock and both an Upper Cretaceous and Late Jurassic Marine sources could be responsible for the seeps and shows found throughout Jamaica (on and offshore)

The oil shows in the Eccleston core hole, eastern Jamaica and gas at Yallahs Point have yet to be analysed.

There are also minor gas anomalies offshore (Inter Ocean sniffer survey image) and SAR indications of hydrocarbons from the recent work by Finder.

The opportunities

Jamaica is offering 4 large onshore blocks and 12 large offshore blocks in shallow to moderately deep water. Earlier work by the JEBCO Alliance identified two or possibly three Petroleum Systems. Some 53 leads have been identified and there is considerable scope for more in the relatively unexplored areas outside of the Walton basin. The Walton Basin, Blossom Basin, Pedro Bank and the North Coast were rated as having high prospectivity and the Jamaica plain, Alice Shoal and Birthday areas were rated as having moderate prospectivity (Ref JEBCO report 2004) clearly the Cayman Trough should be thought of as unprospective at present.

Excess gas will be monetised by creating methanol, fertilizer, urea, CNG, GTL, LNG or GHN.
