Spotlight: Members’ Studios & Creative Spaces! “Welcome to My Studio”

You are invited to share with fellow calligraphers your creative space and introduce members to you. The “Welcome to My Studio” feature will appear in the next bulletin and future news bulletins.

Send a photo of yourself, and one or more of your creative space, a sample of your work if you would like, and a little bit about you. Cell phone photos are fine – the spontaneity is refreshing!

Send to Renee at: [email protected].

To kick off this summer’s studio feature I thought I would introduce my creative space! My studio is a spare bedroom only 10’ x 13’. I have it filled with a plethora of materials with projects waiting for me on my drafting boards. I am a botanical instructor, illustrator and calligrapher. Preferring to create in mixed medias, I find that ink is my main media of choice. As a calligrapher I can choose to work with ink all of the time! And ink, like my watercolor pencils, color pencil and paint, come in a grand range of color, adding that right sparkle to a finished piece.

The sample pages chosen are two pages in my daily practice journal. The journal is a Clairefontaine notebook (Style-N9542C, 5.75” x 8” with gridded pages). Ink, and graphite are well received on the smooth paper surface. For broad-edged studies I use a Pilot Parallel pen, 3.2mm filled with fountain pen ink, or a Pilot Metropolitan fountain pen converted to an italic point. I include a few extra pens and supplies to embellish for measure!

Artists Worldwide Remember Ray Tomasso, a Dear Friend to

CCG Calligraphers

Well-known friend and artist, Ray Tomasso, passed

away this summer on June 25, 2020. Ray possessed impeccable talent, with clear vision for his skill at creating cast paper, and his lifelong pursuits, including the letterpress and printmaking.

Our hearts go out to his wife Diane and the many who knew him personally.

Read about Ray here: Westwordwebsite.

This is my calligraphy kit for coffee shop lettering, or anywhere lettering. It is portable and has all I need to letter or sketch in my journal. Both journal and kit fit nicely into a small over-the- shoulder-bag.

Tax-deductible donations in Ray's memory can be made to the Ray Tomasso Art and Design Scholarship Fund that has been established at Ray's high school, North High, in Omaha, Nebraska. Mail your donation to:

Let’s Keep Our Ink and Paint Flowing! Due to the current isolations and restrictions, with no current guild workshops on the horizon, it seems fitting to offer up

a summer project to have some creative fun with. The design below is one of thousands from www.clipart.library.com. You will find many printable, or coloring book line drawings at no charge through your web browser.

Go to www.getdrawings.com for a wide variety of coloring book subjects.

Here are a few suggestions and ideas to jump start your creative exploration: • Fill in flower petals or sun rays with your favorite calligraphic lettering style, with your favorite point or nib. • Or, fill the shapes with the alphabet one shape at a time. • If you prefer to draw or work with patterns, use tangles from the Zentangle families drawn and filled in with the

color media of your choice. • Idea! Xerox the design onto paper other than bond paper. Fabriano 90lb. Studio Watercolor paper will go

through a home printer. Be sure to spray fix the print before adding watercolor or marker. Ink will do fine without spray fixing first. I prefer the Grumbacher Workable Spray Fix, however, the Krylon brand will work just as well. A light pass of spray should work just fine. Be sure to spray outdoors, and not inside of your workspace.

• Or, enlarge the design to work as large as you would like. 11” x 14” or 11” x 17” bond are other options. • Work outside of the lines as well as inside of the lines for added interest.

Select the media of your choice. As calligraphers and artists our supply options are limitless! The round center has just enough space to fill with a few words or a quote. Use this exercise to open up your playful imagination. Please share your finished creation for all to view in the next bulletin. Send a cell phone photo of your piece via text message or email to Renee.

Most importantly, relax and enjoy the exploration!
