Exceptional thesis presented for the degree of mestre em Ciência das Religiões at the Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias, under the supervision of prof. José Eduardo Franco. The main objective is to address the issue of the forgiveness to the descendants of converted Jews under pombal. Jews were present at the forma-tion of portugal. However, the trajectory of this minority in portugal was not always peaceful. At the time of D. manuel I, the Jews who converted to Christianity were called New Christians, a clear demonstration of inequality with other Christians. With the implantation of the Inquisition in portugal, the New Christians with Jewish background became the main target of persecution, inquests, indictments and convictions. Father Antonio Vieira that stood in defense of the Jews and the New Christians, in addition to proposing the restructuring of the portuguese Inquisition. The main part of this work deals with the pombal era, with emphasis on the several legislative documents enacted by under D. José. These documents which benefited the New Christians brought a new legal framework arising from the promulgation of the Law of Good Reason, an important part of modern portuguese law.

ISbN: series: 978-972-42-5148-6; this volume: 978-972-42-5149-3. Volume 1. $45.00

Series editors are José Eduardo Franco and Carlos Fiolhais. The editor of the present volume is José António Souto Cabo. Obras Pioneiras da Cultura Portuguesa is an impressive project, with sponsorship from the president of portugal, and involves the partnership of esteemed researchers and professors from universities, cultural centers, and research institutes primarily from Portugal, with financing from a myriad of institutions including Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Ordem dos Médicos, CTT, República Portuguesa—Edu-cação, and FCT. The present volume has opening remarks on the series by the president of Portugal—Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa—on pp. xi-xii, a preface by João Gabriel Silva (rector of the Universidade de Coimbra) and Paulo Maria Bastos da Silva Dias (rector of the Universidade Aberta) on pp xii-xiv, and a general introduction to the series by all the editors of the Obras Pioneiras project occupies pp. xv-lix. As the editors describe it is extraordinarily difficult to find copies in print of works in Portuguese authored by many important figures of the Renaissance and even the Portuguese enlightenment (p. xix). The aim of the present series seems make works available in a convenient edition that would otherwise be lost to the general public due to the rarity of the publications and written in a language that is often impenetrable without advanced scholarly knowledge. Further, it aims to show the evolution of the portuguese language and culture through a comprehensive series that covers a myriad of themes including early works on heraldry, painting, music, botany, medicine, and rhetoric (pp. xx-xxii).

An introduction to this Volume 1, by José António Souto Cabo, appears on pp. 3-26, where he writes that the volume brings together the most important and earliest manifesta-tions of Portuguese as a written language and/or culture (p. 3). The texts selected for the volume include: Cantigas Trovadorescas (Lírica Galego-Portuguesa)—Cantigas Profanas (comprised of numerous authors including Afonso X and D. Dinis), pp. 31-243; Cantigas de Santa Maria, pp. 245-258; Prosa literária (“Estória do Santo Graal”, pp. 263-272; “Livro de Merlim”, pp. 273-277; “Livro de Tristão” pp. 279-288); Glossary of archaic terms, pp. 289-294; Documentação instrumental on pp. 295-316 include “Pacto entre Gomes Pais e Ramiro Pais” (ca. 1175) on p. 299, and “Avença entre D. Afonso III e Mor Martins abadessa de Arouca” (November 1, 1257) on pp. 315-316. In the editor’s introduction, he explains that the texts of the cantigas found in the volume are drawn from the following sources and not from original autograph copies by the authors: Cancioneiro da Ajuda; Pergaminho Vindel (Morgan Library); Pergaminho Sharrer (Torre do Tombo); Cancioneiro da Biblioteca Nacional; Cancioneiro da Biblioteca Vaticana. For each text, a biographical note is provided about the author, and a brief explanation of the text including key verses and clarification when the language is obscure.

please note the price of this volume is applicable only to subscribers of the entire series. In principle we can obtain unique copies of singular volumes from the Obras pioneiras da cultura portuguesa series, but this may result in additional costs.
