Culture and Society in Nigeria: Traditions, Gender Relations and Political Economy / Akin

Alao & Tunde Babawale (Editors)Lagos: Concept Publications Limited, 2010

Nigeria is currently faced with a crisis of identity arising from the destruction of her cultural

heritage, bastardization of her traditions and reckless distortion of her values. There is anurgent need, more than ever before, to arrest the drift to national suicide by making an

academic recourse to the enduring values of culture in national development and socio-political stability.

This book, in two volumes, examines the intersection of society and culture in Nigeria to

provide a basis for a better understanding of the peculiarities and similarities of culturaltraditions of the various Nigerian Groups. It provides refreshing insights into traditions

about origin, patterns of migrations and settlements and importantly about the nature and

character of intergroup relations before the imposition of colonial rule. Conscious of thepatriotic role of history in any human formation, the book explores aspects of Nigerianhistory and culture to make a strong case for the relevance of cultural studies in laying a

solid foundation for state and nation-building in post-imperial Nigeria.http://www.marymartin.com/web?pid=119585

Oral Traditions in Black and African Culture / Adegboyega Ajayi & Samuel Idowu Fabarebo(Editors)

    Lagos: Concept Publications Limited, 2009xix. 524p. ; 22cm.

    ISBN-13: 9789788406167$ 45.00

The pervasive misconception of Africans as a people without a historical, cultural and

educational past made it expedient for concerned African scholars to come together to

disprove that notion. Their argument is that, although unwritten, oral traditions carried onsince pre-literate times represent repertoires of authentic beliefs and practices of African

people. This book, Oral Traditions in Black and African Culture is the product of a four-day

international collaborative conference on African culture jointly organized by the Centre forBlack and African Arts and Civilization (CBAAC) and Adeyemi College of Education (ACE),

    Ondo in December 2008

It is a bold attempt at not only understanding several aspects of African oral traditionsbut also drawing attention to the urgent need to save our dying cultural legacy.

Gender in Yoruba Oral Traditions / Oyeronke OlademoLagos: Concept Publications Limited, 2009

    viii. 124p. ; 22cm.ISBN-13: 9789788406242

For about three decades now, feminist agitations over the status and role of women, especially in Western countries, have pushed gender issues to the front burner in academicdiscourse. In African countries, however, the story is different.

This book, based on a microcosm of the African race the Yoruba, whom the authordescribes as arguably the most researched ethnic group in Africa, discusses the issue of

gender in Yoruba oral literature, focusing on the contents of identified genres and how thesecontents are determined by the nature of the context that produced them. These identified

genres are analyzed under various thematic components such as timing, social relations

economics, political engagements maintaining balance/ complementarity, which representthe other realms of human activity that hinge on gender theory and practice among the

Yoruba. It is recommended for gender activists, students and researchers in the social sciences

as well as in language and linguistics.

There is a benevolent school of thought that the flame of anti-corruption never died butmerely quivered perilously low in some administrations. There is, on the other hand, a

school of thought that most administrations in the past snipped ineffectually at corruption.Perhaps, the point of agreement between these two schools of thought is the suggestion

that the practical battle against corruption has gathered momentum and is rising to feverheat. The laws of warfare in this war against corruptions are, however of crucial concern tolegal scholars and commentators. Yet the legal arguments are often seen as academic

exercises. For the masses living in abject and abysmal poverty, there is wealth everywhere but not a

drop to drink. For them, it is a crime against their raison detre; it is a crime againsthumanity. That is the gist of this work: the war on corruption, the laws of warfare, and the

poverty-stricken masses who are invariably non-combatants but who are brazenly and

charge of the Lagos territory. He rose through the ranks to become Director-General of Postand Telecommunications.

Akindeles account of key events in the political history of Nigeria, being close friendswith Ademulegun, Ironsi and Ogundipe in particular, brings new insights to the turbulent

events of the first republic and the subsequent military regimes (Aguyi-Ironsi, Gowon andMurtala Mohammeds). His role in telecommunications during the civil war gives us fresh

insight into important events of that period. Most interesting however, was the battle ofwills that occurred, when he was pitted against Murtala Mohammed, over the signing of theITT/Radio Corporation of Nigeria contract. This saga eventually cost him his job and could

be said to be one of the factors that precipitated the coup of 1976.He gave his best, and was later rewarded with a role beyond the shores of a single

nation, after he was prematurely retired from office. With a deep desire to serve the nation, Akindele has tried to live an honest and

principled life, and struggled to make the civil service an honourable profession. This

autobiography will, as well as painting an interesting history of Nigeria, give us a portrait ofa man of courage, wit and above all, principle.

and already display his genius as a poet. With Full Tide which includes his latest poems, it can now be argued, allowing for all the

politics of African literature, here is a great poet, the pre-eminent poet of a unique period ofthe 20thcentury during which a few of his generation created on the continent, side by side

with others of their kind in French and Portuguese, a new literature in English.http://www.marymartin.com/web?pid=119671--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

21stCentury Nigerian Literature: An Introductory Text studies some one hundred Nigerianliterary works which have emerged in the new millennium. In the fertile imaginations of the

authors of these works reside the developmental hope of the Nigerian national literature on

the one hand, and the achievement of the humanizing ideal of the scribal arts on the 21st

century novel, poetry, drama, short story and childrens literature with a modestlycomprehensive attitude, on the other. It also aims at providing a 21 stcentury view of what

has happened in and to Nigerian literature from the earliest beginnings.http://www.marymartin.com/web?pid=119673

Honourable Samuel Bakuras attempt to correct what he thought was wrong with the

intricate and demanding job of lawmaking at the Federal House of Representatives threwhim headlong into a series of confounding conflicts.

TENANTS OF THE HOUSE is a skilful fictional delineation of the ugly colours of Nigerianpolitics with its seeming intrigues, base motives,win-at-all-cost motivations, and money as

the great leverage. With its rich mix of love and politics, TENANTS OF THE HOUSEpresents, with gripping suspense, a shrill voice of a nation in urgent need of political

When myths are employed in drama, they are not meant to plunder the past forentertainment. Rather, they are remembrances of the relics of the past for education.

On this particular occasion, we stand on the solid rock of the spirit of the Yoruba woman

who. For millions of years, have been keenly alive both to her cultural responsibilities, aswife and mother, and to her gender as an equal partner to man in the business of life.

Belly Bellows is Akinwumi Orojide-Isolas attempt at recreating the popular Yoruba Oyamyth with a metaphor that gives a deeper understanding of individuals and groups in

    situations of conflict and cooperation.http://www.marymartin.com/web?pid=119684
