A 500 sq. ft. garage apartment fufills the desire for density and additional residence to an exisitng house in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Austin, TX. A three car garage establishes a basic programmatic and physical structurethrough which a concentrated experience of the natural world can occur. Outdoor rooms in the form of an expansive porch are coupled to interior living spaces that open to views of a neigbors Live Oak, the setting sun, or down the overgrown alley.

Siting just below the original telescope of the McDonald Observatory, the Astronomer’s lodge reveals a rich experience between an isolated place of study and the engagement of scientific community. Individual rooms set into the mountain offer privacy and hermetic retreat, while above universal spaces for eating, educating, and discussion advance the interaction of its guests.

The house is in the desert of West Texas, and serves as a weekend retreat for an amateur astronomer. A brilliant night sky devoid of light pollution and the intensity of local geography define the project. The house, whose only permanent resident is a 9 ft. telescope, is divided according to the experiences of earth, horizon, and sky.

The structure creates an entrance to the swimming pool through a subtle emphasis on light, water, and reflection. An interior room for the ticket taker, a walled bench for visitors, and a small pond elicit a sense of anticipation for experiencing the natural waters of the spring.

The 1st street bridge in Austin, TX joins the south side of the city to the downtown warehouse and new 2nd street districts. The residential building, set on top of the civic infra-structure, intensifies the immediate axial connection to City Hall, and reveals an oppurtunity for a multi-layered public space that engages Town Lake and the State Capitol of Texas.

“The difference is accented, and our understanding of a table recedes as a new definition becomes bound to the object. Describing it as “art” is rather simple, but the nuance of not being a table is more important. Smith’s work uses the table object as a medium through which a new activity and approach are elicited. It is quite easy to imagine that the drawer should not be understood as a place to put things, and that it only has the appearance of drawer. Its purpose is unknown or undisclosed, its modification for an undetermined end. The piece is experienced not as a degree of furniture, but a new whole that functions through the modification itself. The set of assumptions that we bring to the object are sidestepped in order to reveal the radical quality of the hinge, and a new intention introduced to the object without any reliance on its previous function.”
