OVERBURDEN DRILLING, LOGGING SAMPLING AND INTERPRETATION
INTRODUCTION
A Longyear "38" reverse circulation overburden drill
was contracted from Bradley Brothers Ltd. to drill 12 holes
on the northwest side of Nighthawk Lake in Cody Township
(Figure 1). The drill was mounted on skids and moved by
bulldozer. Holes QT84-001 to QT84-012 (Figure 2) were
drilled from February 16 to 21 (inclusive) 1984. The work
was done on claims P 528670 to P 528672, P 536833, P 536834
and P 540264 and is being applied to the 41 contiguous
claims P 540261 to P 540276, P 540038 to P 540049, P 539979
to P 539986 (except P539982) and P 536831 to P 536836
inclusive.
DRILLING A LOGGING
Water or a mixture of compressed air and water is pumped
down the outer tube of the dual tube rods and through the
tricone bit. The material is flushed up the inner tube to
the surface as it is being drilled. At the surface, the
water/material mixture is passed through a cyclone, where it
is slowed down before discharging into a 25 Litre sample
bucket. A 2 mm (10 mesh) screen is placed above the bucket
to catch the Quaternary sediment slurry so that it can be

observed and described in field notes before it is manually
deposited into the sample bucket (Figure 3). The Quaternary
sediment sample is allowed to settle in the bucket prior to
decanting and bagging. Boulders and bedrock are flushed up
as rock chips up to 2 cm in size. Boulder chips are
discarded. Bedrock chips are collected as a sample directly
from the 2 mm screen and bagged. Field notes are later
transcribed onto logging sheets (Appendix I). Profiles are
drawn from the drill logs.
SAMPLING
Sample Intervals
Overburden samples are taken through the entire
thickness of the overburden. Each sample consists of only
one sediment type. The sample intervals are thus determined
by the thickness of the unit. Within specific units that
are greater than 6 feet thick, samples are taken over
intervals 2 to 6 feet in length. Lacustrine sediment and
boulders are not saved. The sample interval is recorded as
a depth measurement at the top and bottom of the sample.
Depth is determined by counting the number of 20 foot drill
rods as they are added to the rod string, and by noting the
amount that the uppermost rod has penetrated the overburden.
10
accuracy of one-half foot can be attained.
Sample Preparation
The 2 to 6 foot sample Interval usually provides about
5 kilograms of material which is usually sufficient to
ensure enough heavy minerals for geochemical analysis.
Heavy mineral concentrates are prepared from the
overburden samples in the laboratory at the Kidd Creek Mines
Exploration Division Office, 571 Moneta Ave., Timmins
(Figure 3).
All samples are washed through a 2 mm (10 mesh) sieve
to remove all material coarser than 2 mm. The < 2 m m
materials are transferred to an elevated holding tank,
thoroughly stirred by a mixer into a slurry, and released
onto the sloped shaker table below. The heavier materials
are separated from the lighter materials by agitation on the
shaker table. The tabled heavies are dried, and the magnetic
fraction removed, using a plunger magnet, and stored. The
non-magnetic fraction is further concentrated using a heavy
liquid (methylene iodide, S.6. 3.3) separation technique.
The resultant non-magnetic heavy minerals are split, using a
small sample splitter, into 3/4 and 1/4 portions. The 1/4
portion is archived for reference and mineralogical
examination, and the 3/4 portion is submitted for
geochemical analysis. This 3/4:1/4 ratio can be altered or
11
specific samples may be combined, depending on the amount of
heavy mineral concentrate and the nature of the overburden
from which it was derived, to ensure sufficient material for
analysis.
Sample Analysis
The heavy mineral concentrates are routinely analyzed
for Au at Nuclear Activation Services Ltd. in Hamilton, and
for Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni and Ag at X-Ray Assay Laboratories Ltd.
in Toronto. To evaluate the quality of the analytical data,
control reference samples of known concentration are
routinely submitted as regular samples.
Gold is determined by direct-irradiation neutron acti
vation on the entire unground heavy mineral concentrate. The
lower detection limit for this method 1s 20 ppb.
After analysis for Au, the heavy mineral concentrates
are ground to -200 mesh (75 urn). A .25 gm split was digested
using 2 ml of concentrated nitric add in a test tube which
is placed for one half hour in a water bath at 95 C. Then l
ml of concentrated hydrochloric acid 1s added and the
digestion continued for another 2 1/2 hours. The test tubes
are shaken at regular intervals during the digestion. Sample
solutions are made up to volume with a lithium buffer
solution and run on a simultaneous direct-current plasma
emission spectrometer (DCP) for Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni and Ag. The
12
lower detection limits for Cu, Zn, Pb, N1 and Ag are 0.5,
0.5, 2.0, 1.0 and 0.5 ppm respectively. The sample pulps
were returned to the Exploration Division office in Timmins
and stored.
INTERPRETATION
The descriptions of the Quaternary sediment types are
used to classify the materials as till, glaciofluvial,
fluviolacustrine or lacustrine in origin. The general
overburden stratigraphy is then worked out by preparing
correlative profiles between holes and comparing these
profiles with published and unpublished data pertaining to
the multiple ice advances in the Timmins area.
Only those geochemical anomalies that occur in till and
repeat in several holes are investigated further. The
significance of geochemical anomalies associated with
overburden types other than till is unknown since their
transport history is too complicated to realistically follow
up.
13
The transport direction of the till that hosts the
interesting geochemical anomalies is followed "up-ice"
towards the geochemical source.
