RECAP | March 2011

Welcome all to what we at CAPPA hope you will find an exciting new format for RECAP. It has been quite a journey to create this publication, but it has been an exhilarating and thrilling endeavour. We have rebranded CAPPA, including a new logo and tagline and are currently working on a more user friendly website. During this year of change, CAPPA would like to thank all of our members for their support. We are working very hard to move CAPPA forward so we can meet your needs. We have redesigned our newsletter into a magazine format. Through this magazine we aim to deliver meaningful communication to meet your

personal and professional needs in our ever-changing industry. Our vision is to design a magazine that will keep your career on track and provide your with up-to-date industry information that is critical for your career growth. We feel it is important that our members stay informed of all our events. This includes such items as our annual conference, monthly lunch and learns, seminars, and news bulletins. Through these initiatives it is our aim at CAPPA to provide our members with the tools they need to take their career to next level. The CAPPA Board of Directors are a very dedicated group,

devoting many volunteer hours to increase the profile of Production Accountants and highlight the significant contribution made by our members to the Oil and Gas Industry. In addition, this magazine would not have been possible without the vision and talent of two gifted editors, Martin Beach and Trish Hoskin. To continually improve the services CAPPA provides to you, we need your continuing input. Please forward any comments, observations or questions to [email protected] In the mean time, it is my sincere hope that you enjoy, and gain value from, this newly imagined RECAP.

Would you like your company highlighted on RECAP’s front cover? How about a feature article to go along with it?

In upcoming issues of RECAP, we will take a look at what makes CAPPA’s history so special. We’ll explore the Founding Fathers, highlight CAPPA’s achievements, interview people who have made a difference in the oil and gas industry and honour the dynamic history of our organization.

RECAP is distributed to oil and gas companies, individual members and educational institutions. A front cover photo with a feature story is a great way to show off your involvement and contribution to CAPPA and our industry.

So please forward your pictures on to the CAPPA office at [email protected] or phone 403-265-1533.

RECAP | March 2011

We kicked off the New Year with two sold out luncheons, a fresh new logo, and the undertaking of a brand new website that will launch in June.

All our committees continue to demonstrate tremendous support in moving CAPPA forward in this year of change. The EPAP Best Practices Committee works hard and diligently to turn out practical and valuable documents. These documents are available to all members to use and customize, according to each individual need.

The Education Committee is busy overseeing and pioneering many new initiatives, including updating CAPPA’s textbooks and power point presentations. They are also creating new seminars and improving existing teaching delivery methods.

GLEI continues their work with government and industry, communicating critical updates to our members and keeping everyone informed.

The Conference Committee and the Anniversary Committee are working in unison to provide a top notch 50th year celebration. And finally, the Events Committee continues to organize and offer our members excellent networking and R&R opportunities such as curling and golf.

All this is possible due to our dedicated, passionate and energetic volunteers. Without excellent volunteers like them, we can’t function as an association. Keep up the good work!

On another note, I would like to address the ConocoPhillips decision to relocate the Production Accounting function to Bartlesville, Oklahoma. CAPPA does not get involved in individual corporate business decisions and we want to clarify any misconceptions regarding our role in this transition. We were approached from ConocoPhillips for information. They inquired about what programs we had available, the delivery methods of those programs, what the value of a CAPPA Certificate is, and most importantly, what a CAPPA membership provides. We were not engaged to design a course to help them directly with this transition. They were only interested in information on the courses and seminars we currently offer to all our members. They were very understanding and receptive to CAPPA’s position not to get involved directly, due to obvious sensitivities.

Our mandate is, and always will be, to design programs and seminars that benefit ALL our members and not to cater to individual business decisions. At the end of the day, I believe ConocoPhillips saw the value our association offers to the PA community. CAPPA will always strive to uphold the standards that all of us have come to expect from all our partners.

Help us Remember

July 2011 marks CAPPA’s 50th anniversary of continuous service to our members. In recognition and celebration of this milestone, we wish to create a historical museum of our many past events. We are seeking pictures of events, old rosters, conference brochures, swag, old RECAPS, government forms, and interesting stories of

how and why CAPPA evolved. Anything that illustrates how our Production Accountants have made valuable contributions to the oil and gas industry are requested. $500 Prizes will be awarded for Most Unique Item and Oldest Item. The items will be exhibited at the CAPPA conference, where members will vote for the winners.

Denyce Lundeen– Anniversary Chair

Please drop off memorabilia at the CAPPA office. All items will then be returned to their owners.Any information or inquiries can be directed to:[email protected].

Zargon Oil & Gas Ltd., a Calgary-based company traded on the TSX, has selected Entero® ONE™ Production Accounting (E1PA) as the software system to help bring on their Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba operating and non-operating wells, and setup native royalties. In the following phases, Zargon will be including North Dakota and processing fees. The decision to move forward with Entero was based on a combination of E1PA’s technical functionality—specifically the LiveLook™ graphical schematic—and the company’s superior support and partnership approach.

“This has been the smoothest conversion I’ve ever seen,” said Cheryl Mahoney, Production/Revenue Consultant at Zargon Oil & Gas Ltd. “E1PA’s system flexibility (especially with swing gas) coupled with Entero’s strong support, patient staff, and excellent training has made this a great experience. I would highly recommend Entero to any organization looking to do a system conversion.”

As the name suggests, E1PA is a single system that allows users to work from one infrastructure and manage all PA operations using one source of data. This is a big difference compared to older PA systems where broken links take hours to resolve, data errors are rampant, and spreadsheets are second nature. With E1PA, energy companies can clearly model and visualize their business with the automated LiveLook schematic. On one screen, you can see all volumetric and financial information in a tabular view, while looking at a live schematic of your physical field infrastructure. This makes it very easy to spot incorrect setup or metering differences, which can be shared with your field operations team. In addition, users can customize their own reports whenever they need them, resulting in higher efficiency and faster decisions.

Oh My!New Logo, New Tagline, New Website, New Luncheons

Last year we held a contest to help us design a new logo for CAPPA. Valerie Lich’s submission became the inspiration for our new logo, which is now proudly displayed on all our media. We were looking for a logo that stood true to CAPPA’s vision of being member-focussed, of being an instrumental agent in the professional development of our members, and Canadian. The new design achieves all three of these goals while also giving CAPPA a fresh innovative image.

Along with the logo came our new tagline “The Voice of Production Accountants”. Yvonne Brown submitted this suggestion and the board was quick to agree that it captures exactly what CAPPA is all about.

We are integrating the logo, tagline and what they represent for CAPPA into our new website. We have been working hard to

And finally, we have expanded our luncheon topics. CAPPA listened to its members and heard that soft skill development was an area that needed attention. The year began with EPAP, followed the next month by a presentation on listening skills. This pattern is set to continue in March with a technical lecture, followed by a personal development presentation in April. We are pleased to serve CAPPA members through continuous improvement in communications.

Education Matters

January marked the beginning of a new year for the CAPPA Education Committee. The group met for the first time to begin strategizing around the direction of the current CAPPA Education program and how to move it forward. Everyone agreed it was an ideal time to look at ways to renew the program, and how to improve the value it offers to CAPPA members and students.

Some ideas that came out of the initial meeting include:

Offering current members career development opportunities through seminars and workshops

Investigating ways to improve methods of accessing programs

Investigating ways to open the program to other institutions in other provinces. For example, how can CAPPA foster the current alliance with South Eastern Community College in Estevan, Saskatchewan?

Improving the delivery of the CAPPA Education programs offered through SAIT and MRU, by using more up-to-date software and technologies.

Enhancing and utilizing technology to reach a larger audience through CAPPA’s online program.

Then, on Saturday, February 5th, the Education Committee held its annual strategic planning session at the Delta Bow Valley. The group reviewed the mandate of the Education program that was passed

down by the CAPPA Board of Directors. The mandate provided a framework to base strategic goals for this year on. Some of the highlights from these discussions include:

Plans to work closely with CAPPA’s partner education institutions to improve program delivery and explore ways to develop and modernize the existing programs. The first pilot of online exams at SAIT is a good example of this strategy. A new software program that will be used as a depository to host CAPPA exams gives the students access to exams via the internet. In the presence of a proctor, students are able to take their test and then find out their exam score before they leave the computer lab. No more bubble sheets! In addition, the software program provides instant exam statistics to SAIT and CAPPA, making this a win-win-win situation for all parties.

Plans to work closely with the CAPPA Communications Director to utilize the CAPPA website that is under construction. The Education Committee sees the website as an excellent avenue in which to improve communications with CAPPA members. The website will provide easily-accessible information on programs, upcoming seminars and workshops through a current and up-to-date education events calendar. Information on the calendar will include

event curriculum, when the programs are offered, at which institutions, as well as links to register online. The potential for this valuable tool is very exciting. Stay tuned for updates as the website becomes available in the upcoming months.

Plans to work closely with the CAPPA Government Liaison Committee and the Alberta Registry Education Coordinator, Sheryl Moody. The committee is seeking a better understanding of the changes that will come when the Saskatchewan Registry goes live in 2012. Sheryl Moody, a subject matter expert, will work closely with committee members to create an updated and standardized CAPPA curriculum. The committee will then help roll out the changes to current members and students.

Plans to create more meaningful and relevant seminar topics. The committee’s goal is to add value to the seminars in the area of career development by offering more workshops on topics like EPAP, Allowable Costs, Alberta Freehold Mineral Tax and Gas Allocations. Watch for updates very soon from MRU and the CAPPA office for times and dates of upcoming seminars.

We are looking forward to a very exciting year of exhilarating changes as we move forward to help our members develop professionally.

What Kind of a Listener Are You… Really? Jo-Ann Pawliw, a Life Coach and Emotional Intelligence Trainer presented at the CAPPA luncheon on February 22, 2011. Here is a re-CAPPA of the presentation the audience raved about!

Listening to what someone has to say is the best way to forge connections and establish a relationship of respect. Clients (and wives, husbands, kids, employees) love it when they are heard the first time. Although most people think that listening is easy, it really is a difficult skill to master. What gets in the way? The simple answer is…ourselves. The more complex answer is …our primal brain. Sometimes when we are listening to others, our mind wanders and starts thinking about things that need to get done or events that happened during the day. At other times, we can start feeling uncomfortable due to a perceived threat (criticism, conflict, misunderstandings, etc.). When our mind perceives a threat, a very interesting primal event is happening in our brains. Feelings of uncertainty, fear or threat, trigger a part of our brain called the amygdala. When the amygdala perceives a threat it sends signals to the brain stem to increase your heart rate, shallow your breathing, and place your nervous system on high alert. This ability to feel first and think second is good for survival, but not for problem solving. When our amygdala activates (think tight muscles, butterfly feeling in stomach, constricted throat) it hijacks our thinking mind. In technical terms, this is the neo-cortex where our IQ is located. This area of the brain becomes flooded with cortisol, diminishing its ability to think complex thoughts. Have you ever said: “My mind went blank!” or, “I just couldn’t think straight”? Have you ever felt you were so sure what someone said, but got it all wrong? Those are examples of when we are experiencing an amygdala hijack and our brain is shutting down the neo-cortex. It can’t problem solve, but rather, gets into survival mode very quickly – in under one second!!! It can cause havoc in how we handle ourselves. Now that you know how we are wired, you can see why we lose our ability to really listen to someone and hear what they are saying, because our brains are wondering if we have to protect ourselves. So when you are listening in the future, check to see if you are really present and calm, or if you are becoming distracted and uncomfortable. Calming your amygdala, and letting your neo-cortex get back to business, will help you manage your listening and yourself with better results. Jo-Ann Pawliw, BEd, BPHE, has a busy Coaching practice that specializes in helping her clients and couples understand the science of stress and leading edge strategies on how to calm their amygdalas. Jo-Ann also offers fun and engaging workshops and keynotes.

CAPPA was created nearly fifty years ago to serve its members. It has always maintained excellent fiscal integrity and now sits in a position to move forward.

The key focus for spending CAPPA funds is to invest it back to its members, thus increasing professional capacity both in individuals and within the industry.

We achieve this through first-rate communication, education and networking opportunities. In the beginning of 2011, CAPPA, as an organization, embarked on a journey to “raise the bar.” We have set several changes in motion; changes that are aimed at increasing our profile in the

petroleum industry, making our existing programs even better and reaching more production accountants.

We are currently investing funds to improve our website. We would like to see more current and practical information on the site, as well as the capability for online seminar registration.

In recent months, CAPPA adopted a new logo and tagline. We have also invested in our quarterly newsletter, Recap. These changes are helping give CAPPA the professional acknowledgement it deserves.

Our education programs are also benefitting from increased spending. We have been developing and refining seminars, upgrading power point presentations and providing students with better education opportunities through text rewrites.

And lastly, CAPPA has been planning its 50th Anniversary event. Celebrating fifty years is a major milestone in our organization’s life and we are proud to say we’ve been around for so long.

We are excited by these changes and feel confident that these investments will help our members continue to grow.
