Diagramming Lesson #2: Introducing Adjectives Recall that an adjective is a modifier that

Adjectives also answer four basic questions:

pronoun it is describing.

Adjectives can help to liven up a drab, dull sentence.

Adjectives usually come before the word that they modify, but sometimes they are found elsewhere in the sentence.

Lackluster sentence: The girl wore a dress.

Detailed sentence: The captivating, young girl wore a shimmery, black lace dress.

The money stolen can never be replaced.

Mrs. Ferris said something interesting today.

And then there are the itty-bitty adjectives...

These 3 adjectives are known as articles and they will always come directly before the noun they modify.

a an the

The student got an A on a biology test. The is a definite article, meaning that the sentence is speaking about a specific student...The student...

The adjectives a and an are indefinite articles because they do not specify a particular meaning. In the sentence above, the specific

student got a good grade on one of her biology tests. If the sentence stated, "The student got the A on the biology test," the meaning now infers that she got the only A on a specific biology test.

Articles are not always interchangeable.

Okay, okay...one more type of unsuspecting adjective to add to our list - the "double-duty" adjective

Pronouns can sometimes act as adjectives. Remember in this case, the pronoun must still answer one of the questions: What kind? Which one? How many/How much?

Notice the difference:Those are the shoes.

Eva is wearing those shoes.

Those is a pronoun acting as the subject.

Those is a pronoun acting as an adjective. It answers the question, Which ones?

A few more examples:Hers is an interesting case to explore. (Possessive pronoun as the Subject) Please look into her case carefully. (Adjective...which one?)

The judge will consider neither. (Indefinite pronoun as the Direct Object)

Neither case went before the judge. (Adjective...which ones?)
