Spot light on...Doncaster Hockey Club Youth Leadership Program In 2014, Doncaster Hockey Club (DHC) launched the Youth Leadership Awards Program. In its inaugural year, 40 young players signed up to undertake the leadership challenge. The program has grown with 70 players involved in 2015. Sponsored by the Bendigo Bank’s Community Enterprise Foundation, the program provides pathways that encourages, recognises and rewards the leadership roles such as coaching, umpiring and administration undertaken by young club members. DHC Operations Manager, Andrea Snow, said of the program: “This is the first time in the club’s history that we have committed to running a program that isn’t hockey specific, but rather engaging our young people in a broader sense.” Potentially some of the youth leaders will assist in a new access for all abilities program, with the club receiving funding from Hockey Victoria to run clinics at Heatherwood School. RESPECT - Manningham Soccer Round Robin Tournament, Skills Clinic and Family Fun Day In only its second year, hundreds of people attended this fun community event on Sunday 1 March at Anderson Park in Doncaster East. The aim of the event is to raise awareness of the importance and need for respect, to unite the community and to connect youth.

A professional soccer skills clinic was held for children, aged 5 – 14, before 20 teams kicked off for the start of a huge soccer round robin.

The day was a great success with participants, family and friends enjoying a barbeque, live entertainment, fun activities and lots of prizes and giveaways.

The headline event was a final match between the official Victoria Police team and a team of community members comprising a representative from each of the participating community teams.

Sponsored by the Manningham Interfaith Network and the Victorian Multicultural Commission the event was well supported by the Manningham community, Victoria Police, Manningham Council, the Doncaster Rovers, Manningham YMCA and the Manningham Interfaith Youth Network; and demonstrated that youth can play a major role in bringing various faiths and cultures together in harmony.

Improving Club CommunicationCouncil recently introduced Integrated Monitoring System (IMS) for clubs that use Council sporting grounds and pavilions. IMS is designed to streamline the facility allocation process via a website that coordinates the seasonal application process of Council facilities, removing the need for paperwork. It also provides a real time facility management package that allows Council and sporting clubs to quickly and conveniently liaise in relation to issues such as maintenance and facility inspections.

IMS went live in December and is being used by winter season clubs to complete sport ground applications for the 2015 winter season. Summer season and annual clubs will be provided with IMS training in April/May in preparation for their allocation period in July/August.

For more information call Chris Brown, Sports Development Planner on 9210 2633.

Sporting Clubs Update

Templestowe Bowling Club On Sunday 23 November the first person used our wheelchair access. Former Mayor of the City of Doncaster and Templestowe, Bill Davey, was the first person to test out a new accessible ramp built as part of renovations at the Templestowe Bowling Club.

Council completed the works last year, which also include a new kitchen, accessible toilet and renovated male and female bathrooms, and newly asphalted car park..

Bill’s wife, Dorothy, brought him to the Club, in November 2014, to visit old friends and view a friendly game between Templestowe and Yarra Valley bowling clubs.

The couple are long time club members of the Templestowe Bowls Club with each holding senior committee positions over a number of years.
