Reason Number1FALL of horse and/or rider


What is a Fall?

1. Competitors are considered to have fallen when, either voluntarily or involuntarily, they are separated from their horse, which has not fallen in such a way that they touch the ground or find it necessary, in order to get back into the saddle, to use some form of support or outside assistance.

2. A horse is considered to have fallen when at the same time both its shoulder and quarters have touched either the ground or the obstacle and the ground.

Falls- Cont.

Falls eliminate – can not remount in the ring GR842 Falls. The fall of horse and/or rider does not disqualify the

competitor unless due to bad mannersof the horse. Exception: Andalusian (see AL101.13), Driving, Eventing, Equitation, Hunter,Jumper, Reining, Vaulting and Western classes, in which specific rules prevail.

If you remount in the ring you are disqualified from showing in that ring for the rest of the day.

3. Disobediences, falls etc., occurring between the signal to start and themoment the competitor crosses the starting line in the correct direction, are not penalized.

Reason # 4 Bad Form

Dropped leg Swimming Hanging a leg Leaving off one leg Other disasters


Reason # 6 - #11- Other Major Faults

Trotting or breaking anywhere on course Leaving out strides makes for a long reaching jump-

going to fast, flat, racing Adding in strides – going too slowly, chipping in not a

very scopey horse Chipping, popping, adding getting too close Pausing or stopping on takeoff Dwelling in the air, jumping in two parts Wrong lead around corner, no lead changes Disunited lead


Other Faults

Spooking Not tight below the knee –parallel forearm but loose

below Twisting or laying on side Stalls on landing/lands in a heap Running anywhere on course Jumps crocked Skips a change Rubs – front or back Flat- no bascule Out too far or too close/deep


Most have been to do with the jump itself now the rest of the

picture comes into play


Minor faults

Most have been to do with the non jumping aspect of the course.


Movement – Rhythm Stride, gait – good, poor, bad or pony gaited Tense or relaxed - Way of going – bend, ears, tail swishing

Tack and turnout Tight martingale Mouth open Inverted


Bonus Features

Recent horse show* The fewer marks the better Turn out can add points * Even pace good rhythm Good form over fences.


Things the Judge Wants to See

Must ‘find’ all the jumps


Looking for

Horse that has: Good form - bascule Good Rhythm Good movement Well turned out Nice to look at


Get Noticed – in a good way

Have excellent turn out – Mane – not overnight braids Tail - braided Clean horse – believe me as a judge I can

appreciate a ‘white’ horse. NO MANURE STAINS

Oiled hooves – it helps Avoid complete grooming session at in-gate



Tack Clean – doesn’t have to be new just clean Appropriate for horse – e.g. D-rings,

martingales Appropriate for class specifications Overly tight martingales



Sponge the horse before the jog or while waiting for the next class– sweat stains and saddle marks are not appropriate. Put some liniment in water to remove sweat stains.

Get off horses back. Extra points for not holding up the class!



Rider Turn Out Please wear choker or tie not open neck shirt Even if jackets are excused wear it just before

entering the ring. It will give you the ‘edge’. Wipe of dust from boots GLOVES! Put spurs on properly Hair net
