In the military Telle In her rst semester at West Kentucky Community & Techni- cal College, Amanda Boyd took a personality assessment test in a psychology class and found out that physi- cal therapy was a denite match for her. After enter- ing the WKCTC physical therapist assistant program in spring 2011, Boyd is now one of two PTA students at WKCTC to be selected to the 2013 Kentucky Physical Therapy Association All-Academic Team. The KPTA partnered with RehabCare to select the stu- dents from Kentucky’s PTA and Doctorate of Physical Therapy programs. Only three Kentucky institu- tions placed more than one stu- dent on the 2013 All-Academic. Boyd of McCracken County joins fellow WKCTC physical therapy assistant student Kaela Burge- Beckley of Madison County, Ill., as two of nine students selected. Boyd, 36, is thrilled with the nomination. “I am super excited about this award because even though I know I am passionate about this eld, someone else has seen and acknowledged it as well. I feel extremely privileged to have been selected.” Students are chosen for the competitive team based upon academic and clinical perfor- mance, extracurricular, campus and community service ac- tivities, participation in physical therapy-related activities and organizations, and a per- sonal statement discussing the student’s career goals and the importance of being an advocate for the physical therapy profes- sion. Boyd is a WKCTC student ambassador and serves both the college and community in sev- eral ways. She volunteers with the college’s annual scholarship auction, Clemens Fine Arts Cen- ter and other campus events and activities. She also volunteers with community organizations such as the United Way, Salva- tion Army and Easter Seals West Kentucky. Boyd recently attended an Amputee Walking School at Madisonville Community Col- lege to learn physical therapy techniques and exercises to better serve amputees. She and Beckley are also participating in raising money for the Pittsburg/ Marquette Challenge where pro- grams raise money for physical therapy research. Boyd will graduate from the college’s PTA Program in December and plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in dietet- ics and athletic training and a doctorate degree in physical therapy. Members of the KPTA All-Ac- ademic Team will be recognized at the KPTA Fall Conference in Lexington and will receive cash scholarships from RehabCare, a leading provider of rehabilita- tion services, including physi- cal, occupational and speech therapies. Thirty-eight students have been recognized through the program since its inception in 2010. Boyd named to physical therapy All-Academic Team Staff report Boyd

Following graduation, Telle was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army within the Armor branch and will report to South Korea for his fi rst assignment.

The mission of the U.S. Military Academy is to educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of char-acter committed to the values of duty, honor and country and prepared for a career of professional excellence and service to the nation as an offi cer in the U.S. Army.

In her fi rst semester at West Kentucky Community & Techni-cal College, Amanda Boyd took

a personality assessment test in a psychology class and found out that physi-cal therapy was a defi nite match for her.

After enter-ing the WKCTC

physical therapist assistant program in spring 2011, Boyd is now one of two PTA students at WKCTC to be selected to the 2013 Kentucky Physical Therapy Association All-Academic Team.

The KPTA partnered with RehabCare to select the stu-dents from Kentucky’s PTA and Doctorate of Physical Therapy programs.

Only three Kentucky institu-tions placed more than one stu-dent on the 2013 All-Academic. Boyd of McCracken County joins fellow WKCTC physical therapy assistant student Kaela Burge-Beckley of Madison County, Ill., as two of nine students selected.

Boyd, 36, is thrilled with the nomination. “I am super excited about this award because even though I know I am passionate about this fi eld, someone else has seen and acknowledged it as well. I feel extremely privileged to have been selected.”

Students are chosen for the competitive team based upon academic and clinical perfor-mance, extracurricular, campus and community service ac-tivities, participation in physical therapy-related activities and

organizations, and a per-sonal statement discussing the student’s career goals and the importance of being an advocate for the physical therapy profes-sion.

Boyd is a WKCTC student ambassador and serves both the college and community in sev-eral ways. She volunteers with the college’s annual scholarship auction, Clemens Fine Arts Cen-ter and other campus events and activities. She also volunteers with community organizations such as the United Way, Salva-tion Army and Easter Seals West Kentucky.

Boyd recently attended an Amputee Walking School at Madisonville Community Col-lege to learn physical therapy techniques and exercises to better serve amputees. She and Beckley are also participating in raising money for the Pittsburg/Marquette Challenge where pro-grams raise money for physical therapy research.

Boyd will graduate from the college’s PTA Program in December and plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in dietet-ics and athletic training and a doctorate degree in physical therapy.

Members of the KPTA All-Ac-ademic Team will be recognized at the KPTA Fall Conference in Lexington and will receive cash scholarships from RehabCare, a leading provider of rehabilita-tion services, including physi-cal, occupational and speech therapies. Thirty-eight students have been recognized through the program since its inception in 2010.

“I Am the Nation” by Otto Whittaker

I was born on July 4, 1776, and the Declaration of In-dependence is my birth cer-tifi cate. The bloodlines of the world run in my veins, because I offered freedom to the op-pressed. I am many things and many people. I am the nation.

I am 250 million living souls -- and the ghost of millions who have lived and died for me. I am Nathan Hale and Paul Revere. I stood at Lexing-ton and fi red the shot heard around the world. I am Wash-ington, Jefferson and Patrick Henry. I am John Paul Jones, the Green Mountain Boys and Davy Crockett. I am Lee and Grant and Abe Lincoln.

I remember the Alamo, the Maine and Pearl Har-bor. When freedom called, I answered and stayed until it was over, over there. I left my heroic dead in Flanders Field, on the rock of Corregidor, on the bleak slopes of Korea and in the steaming jungle of Viet-nam.

I am the Brooklyn Bridge, the wheat lands of Kansas and the granite hills of Vermont. I am the coalfi elds of the Vir-ginias and Pennsylvania, the fertile lands of the West, the Golden Gate and the Grand Canyon. I am Independence Hall, the Monitor and the Merrimac.

I am big. I sprawl from the Atlantic to the Pacifi c -- my arms reach out to embrace Alaska and Hawaii. I am more than fi ve million farms. I am forest, fi eld, mountain and desert. I am quiet villages -- and cities that never sleep.

You can look at me and see Ben Franklin walking down the streets of Philadelphia with his breadloaf under his arm. You can see Betsy Ross with her needle. You can see the lights of Christmas and hear the strains of “Auld Lang Syne” as the calendar turns.

I am Babe Ruth and the

World Series. I am 110,000 schools and colleges and 330,000 churches where my people worship God as they think best. I am a ballot dropped into a box, the roar of a crowd in a stadium and the voice of a choir in a cathedral. I am an editorial in a newspaper and a letter to a Congressman.

I am Eli Whitney and Ste-phen Foster. I am Tom Edi-son, Albert Einstein and Billy Graham. I am Horace Greeley, Will Rogers and the Wright Brothers. I am George Wash-ington Carver, Jonas Salk and Martin Luther King Jr.

I am Longfellow, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Walt Whit-man and Thomas Paine.

Yes, I am the nation and these are the things that I am. I was conceived in freedom and, God willing, in freedom I will spend the rest of my days.

May I possess always the integrity, the courage and the strength to keep myself un-shackled, to remain a citadel of freedom and a beacon of hope to the world.
