Now, the new 2009 Budget addssignificant Home Renovation Tax Credits to the EcoEnergy Rebates already available to help offset the cost ofhome improvement projects. This means, there's neverbeen a smarter time to invest than right now.

Temporary, Timely and Targeted StimulusThe HRTC will apply to window expenditures for workperformed, or goods acquired, after January 27, 2009 andbefore February 1, 2010, pursuant to agreements enteredinto after January 27, 2009. The temporary nature of the credit will provide an immediate incentive forCanadians to undertake new window purchases or acceler-ate planned projects.

How the HRTC Will WorkThe 15-per-cent credit may be claimed on the portion ofeligible expenditures exceeding $1,000, but not more than$10,000, meaning that the maximum tax credit that can bereceived is $1,350.

The credit can be claimed on eligible expenditures incurredon one or more of an individual’s eligible dwellings.Properties eligible for the HRTC include houses, cottagesand condominium units that are owned for personal use.

Who Can Claim the HRTC?Taxpayers can claim the HRTC when filing their 2009 taxreturn. Eligibility for the HRTC will be family-based. Forthe purpose of the credit, a family is generally considered toconsist of an individual, and where applicable, the individ-ual’s spouse or common-law partner. Family members willbe able to share the credit.

What About the ecoENERGY Grant?The Federal Government’s ecoENERGY Grant Program,combined with the Ontario Matching Grant, means youcan receive a grant of $80 per window opening. To qualifyfor the grant, you must have a pre-inspection by an authorized inspector, install ENERGY STAR® qualifiedwindows and have a post inspection where you will be ableto fill in your application.
