Marcus Daly Mansion

The U.S. Forest Service and the Bitterroot National Forest

The Forest Service is a division of the

Department of Agriculture and was

founded in the late 1890’s. The Bitterroot

Forest Reserve was established by

Congress on February 22, 1897. The

Reserve encompassed 4,147,200 acres and

originally included all or parts of the Nez

Perce, Salmon, Clearwater, Lolo and

Beaverhead Forests. When originally

named the Bitter Root was 2 words,

however this was changed to one word by Executive Order in 1908 and the Bitterroot was born. Today the

Bitterroot Forest covers 1.6 million acres. There are numerous points of interest, campgrounds, trailheads and miles

of hiking trails scattered throughout the Bitterroot National Forest

The Bitterroot National Forest includes portions of three wilderness areas. Only

1% of the 2 million acre Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness lies in

the Bitterroot Forest. The Anaconda-Pintlar Wilderness, lying on the south-east

side of the valley, contains 158,516 acres. The Anaconda-Pintlar straddles the

Continental Divide and elevations run from 5100 feet to 10,793 feet on West

Goat Peak. Its numerous lakes and streams provide excellent fishing and the

spectacular scenery is home to deer, moose, elk, bighorn sheep, mountain goats

and black bears.

The Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness lies on the west side of the valley and encompasses

1,337,681 acres. Most of the land lies in Idaho and the Selway-Bitterroot is one of the

largest classified wilderness areas in the United States. Elevations range from 1600 feet on

the Selway River to over 10,130 feet on Trapper Peak.

This is an incredibly rough & beautiful mountain area

with deep narrow canyons & high barren peaks. The

area has been burned repeatedly by major fires in 1910,

1919, 1934 and most recently in 2000 burning vast

areas. These fires prove again that despite human

efforts, nature is truly in control. Elk populations have flourished on the new

forage created in the aftermath of the fires. Game animals include deer, elk,

moose, black bears, bighorn sheep & mountain goats. Fishing is excellent as the

area is dotted with over 100 lakes and numerous streams.

There have been several confirmed grizzly bear sightings on the east side of the valley in

recent years. While there continue to be occasional unconfirmed sightings of grizzly bears in

the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness area, the last grizzly bear legally taken from the area was in

1956. The Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness area has been studied over the years to determine if

grizzly bears still exist in the region. A grizzly requires solitude and an adult bear can have a

home range of 200-800 square miles. If grizzlies still exist or may be considered for

re-introduction someday, this area combined with adjacent remote areas provides one of the

largest potential grizzly bear habitats in the lower 48 states. It is hoped that such a large,

wild area would keep grizzly-human encounters to a minimum. Grizzly bear re-introduction

is certainly a controversial subject & guaranteed to get a lively conversation started among

friends & family!

Today the Forest Service faces its biggest challenge to date. With growing pertinent environmental concerns &

increasing political challenges, the Forest Service is attempting to walk the fine line of addressing environmental

concerns, providing access for the public and timber sales for the timber industry. It is a difficult job becoming

harder everyday.
