Important points to remember about the preterite:

1.1. For regular preterite tense verb conjugations, drop the ending of the infinitive and add the following endings in its place:

Yes, it’s true!!! “ERER” and “IRIR” preterite tense verbs share the same endings!!

Easy!!

2.2. –ARAR and –ERER stem-changing verbs do NOT have a stem-change in the preterite!! YEA!!! The “e” remains an “e” and the “o” remains an “o”.

3.3. –CARCAR verbs will end in –quéqué in the 1st person singular (yo) of the preterite. This is for easier pronunciation.

4.4. –GARGAR verbs will end in –guégué in the 1st person singular (yo) of the preterite. This is for easier pronunciation.

5.5. –ZARZAR verbs will end in –cécé in the 1st person singular (yo) of the preterite. This is for easier pronunciation.

6. The preterite is used to express completed past action. The action has a definite beginningdefinite beginning andand a definite end a definite end.

7. Look for cluesclues. Look for adverbial expressions that imply the preterite - completed past action, action with a definite beginningdefinite beginning ANDAND a definite enda definite end:

•ayerayer – yesterday•ayer por la mañanaayer por la mañana – yesteday morning•el año pasadoel año pasado – last year•el sábado pasadoel sábado pasado – last Saturday•hace una horahace una hora – an hour ago•la última vezla última vez – the last time•la primera vezla primera vez – the first time•anocheanoche – last night

First, write the English equivalent for the Spanish infinitive. Then,conjugate the infinitive into the preterite tense. Also, write the English translation of the preterite 1st person singular (yo) as it will be the basis for the other translations of each person.
