Ride around the lake charity successOn Saturday 3rd May more than 500 cyclists braved the cold and wet conditions early in the morning to take part in the 2014 Ride Around the Lake, a charity event raising money for homeless youth.

Taking off from Lakeside Park in Kanahooka, 530 riders showed their support for the cause, cycling either a full 40-kilometre circuit around Lake Illawarra or taking it a little easier on the 10-kilometre option.

So far, $48,000 has been raised from the event with all proceeds going to the Lighthouse Youth Initiative. The organisation accommodates and supports homeless youth aged between 16 and 24, and helps source training and employment opportunities for disengaged youth.

Lighthouse community service manager and one of the event’s organisers Josh Hammann said the money raised would help the charity to expand the service.

Among the lycra-clad riders were current residents of the youth housing supported by the event, who rode on donated bicycles, 50 students and staff from Cedars Christian College and 81-year-old Ted Bartlett. One of the event’s more mature entrants, Mr Bartlett was this year’s highest individual fund-raiser.

Colliers International Wollongong were the major sponsor of the event, promoting the event throughout their networks ensuring the day was successful. Office manager, Kim Wittek described the day as a huge success. “Despite the bitterly cold day, we had eight-year-olds up to 81-year-olds, a real great mix of elite cyclists down to recreational ones and families as well,” she said.

The Entire Colliers International team participated in the event either as competitors or volunteers with Kim’s parents who were visiting from Holland even joining in. “My father rode the 40km event along with my fiancée Craig and myself and my mother manned the Colliers International tent assisting our team and clients.”

Ray White achieves second $3.2 billion resultIn a month where there were a number of conflicting assessments of the Australian property market by different commentators, the Ray White Group was able to match its career best total of $3.2 billion in May.

Brian White, chairman of the Ray White Group said that traditionally records are set in November or March with May being seen as the beginning of the reduced activity over the curl of winter months. “This is the first time that this number – a record equalling result – has been achieved in a month of May,” he said.

The result reflects continuing strength in the Australian markets – particularly in Sydney and Melbourne. “It’s the third time in recent months that NSW achieved a result of over $1 billion in itself.

Australian median house price shows modest growthAccording to the Bendigo Bank/Real Estate Institute of Australia quarterly review, median residential property prices rose overall over the March quarter.

The weighted average median price for houses in Australia’s capital cities is now $606,517 up from $594,945 in the December quarter. Non-house dwellings, such as units and apartments, sit at a median price of $483,320, a rise of 1.7% from the December quarter.

Dennis Bice, Executive Retail, Bendigo and Adelaide Bank said the Australian weighted average median house price is 13.1% higher when compared with the March quarter 2013. “In terms of quarterly growth for East coast capitals, the median house price in Melbourne rose 3.7%, to $652,500, an increase in the rolling annual median house price of 13.7%,” he said.

“Sydney followed with an increase of 3.1% over the March quarter to $782,973, 16.9% higher than the figure for the same time last year. Brisbane’s median house price fell 1.1% to $460,000 but still recorded an increase of 4.8% when compared to the same quarter in 2013.”

“Hobart rose 4.1%, to $385,000, an increase of 6.9% when compared to the same quarter in 2013 while on the West Coast, the median house price for Perth fell 1.6% over the quarter to $540,000. Year on year, the figure for Perth represents a 4.9% increase. Adelaide and Darwin both recorded quarterly increases of 0.9% and 1.6% respectively”, Mr Bice concluded.
