In April 2012, partners from the Marathon County Alcohol & Other Drug Partnership Council, Healthy Eating Active

Living (HEAL) Coalition, Early Years Coalition and the Hunger Coalition in Marathon County came together to create a

community-wide campaign called The Real Happy Hour. Within months, this new community collaboration adopted

an official logo and mission, Promoting quality family time together for a healthier community.

To truly make this effort a community-owned project, the collaborating coalitions wanted to produce a brand that

can be used by an indeterminate number of invested individuals and organizations. The Real Happy Hourwill not

only promote the mission and goals of each collaborating partner, it will primarily focus on the protective factors

that link the impact of family mealtime and family playtime on childhood obesity, alcohol and substance abuse in

    adolescents, and early childhood development.

The driving force behind The Real Happy Houris a core group of community leaders and organizations that have

abandoned their individual agendas in favor of a collective approach to support families spending quality time

together in Marathon County. This group, The Real Happy Hour Task Force, has accepted a shared vision for change

and common agenda to support The Real Happy Hours mission.

The Real Happy Hourcampaignis designed to flourish from the coordination of differing activities and opportunities

created by the network of organizations involved. The Real Happy Houris not trying to create new educational

programs, services, or events for families in Marathon County. Instead, it is determined to connect families to the

resources that are already available in the community in which they live.

The Real Happy Houris focusing the entire community on a single set of goals that promote and support

opportunities for families to spend quality time together engaging in healthy behaviors. This focus requires a

systemic approach that focuses on networking between organizations and progress toward shared objectives. This

approach ensures that all organizations, agencies, and community stakeholders involved with The Real Happy Hourrecognize and understand the true power that collective impact can have on our community.

The Real Happy Hourcampaign has two simple goals. The first is to identify how families in Marathon County spend

quality time together and to brand these moments as a The Real Happy Hour. Whether its cooking and eating a

meal together at home, going on a walk or bike ride to the park, or reading together before bedtime, these

moments that families spend together are quality examples to The Real Happy Hours mission

    One of the best things

    you can do for your

    children is to provide a

    family meal.

    Most parents look for

    ways to give their

    children an edge, but

    many miss an easy and

    often inexpensive recipe

    for success: eating

    together.

    Family Mealtimes Provide Profound Benefits!

    1. Family mealtimes foster family

togetherness and establish a sense of family

identity which helps children feel safe and

secure in a confusing world. It is the eating

    together that is most important.

    2. Family mealtimes help prevent behavior

problems. Studies have shown that when

families eat together, children are less likely

to use tobacco, alcohol, drugs, develop

eating disorders or engage in other negativebehavior.

    3. Family mealtime helps children do well in

school. As children listen to adults talk, they

learn important language skills, such as new

    vocabulary and putting words into

sentences, all valuable skills for reading,

    listening, and comprehension in school.

    4. Family mealtimes encourage healthy

eating by paying more attention to what

food is prepared and how it is prepared. This

translates into increased intake of fruits and

vegetables, and decreased intake of sugar

    and fat.

    5. Family mealtimes help prevent weight

problems. Smart eating habits help children

grow up with a healthy weight and attitude

towards food and fitness. Adults can role

model positive, healthy habits for children .

Family Mealtime = Healthy Eating = Healthy Weight

    Mealtime Research Finding

A national study, February,2010, out of Ohio StateUniversity found that 4-year-olds living in homes with threecertain routines had an almost40% lower prevalence ofobesity than did children inhomes that practice none of

    these routines. The routineswere:

Eating dinner together asa familyGetting adequate sleepLimiting weekdaytelevision viewing time.

Conversation StartersSometimes families dont know where to begin when it

comes to having a conversation at the table. Here are some

ideas to get you started. Take turns and see where the

table talk takes you. You might just find out some things

about your children and them about you.

Many studies show a strong link between

eating habits of parents, food preferences

and nutrient intakes of their children.

When parents eat fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and drink milk, so do their

children. It takes 7-15 exposures to a

new food for children to accept and enjoy

that food, so continue to provide a variety

of nutritious foods, never force. Perhaps

the best advice on healthy eating is the

division of feeding responsibilities fromEllyn Satter, an internationally recognized

    authority on eating and feeding.

    Adults have the responsibility to:

    Choose and prepare foods

    Provide regular meals and snacks

    Make eating times pleasant

    Offer opportunities to learn new

    skills

    Childrens eating capabilities:

Children know how much to eat

Children will eat a variety of food

    Children will grow predictability

    Childrens eating will mature

Treasure the time together during family mealtime.

Turn off the TV, cell phones or remove any other
