Montana for the Win
Phil Mickelson pulled off one of the
greatest comebacks in sports history,
and he has Montana to thank. In June
the veteran golfer suffered the most
humiliating defeat of his life when, after
ve second-place nishes in the U.S.
Open, he blew what should have been an
easy win with a pair of epic mulligans.
He spent the next two days moping inbed, completely inconsolable. But then
he went to Yellowstone with family and
friends. When he came back, he really
came back. In his next major tournament,
the British Open, he went into the nal
round behind by ve shots and ended it
winning by three. (Yahoo! Sports, 7/21/13)
Weight Discrimination
Counterproductive
People who are overweight alreadyexperience a lot of discrimination in the
U.S., even from doctors, and it appears to
be worsening. While some discrimination
may be well-intended, a recent study
indicates that it has a negative effect.
Researchers at Florida State College of
Medicine looked at data from over 6,000
elderly people and found that, over a
four-year period, people who reported
the most discrimination based on their
weight were more likely to become
obese or to remain obese than thosewho reported the least discrimination.
Whether or not this nding holds (the
statistical signicance was not very
high), its important to keep in mind not
only that obesity is often due to factors
that are not a matter of choice but also
that discrimination may make weight
control more difcult than it already is.

BPA-Free Just as Bad?
BPA is commonly used in plastics,
and its known to work like estrogen,
potentially contributing to health
problems, including cancer, in humans.
For that reason, youll see many plastic
products advertised as being BPA-
free. But are the alternatives just as
bad? An Austin trial may shed light on
that question. On one side is Eastman
Chemical, which markets Tritan, a BPA-
free plastic resin. On the other is George
Bittner, a University of Texas professor
and founder of PlastiPure, a company
that claims to produce plastics with no
estrogenic activity. Bittner also founded
a testing company that published a
study showing that Eastmans BPA-free
product still had estrogenic activity.
(NPR.org, Shots, 7/15/13)
To Be or Not to Be
Maybe youd better ask that question over
coffee, because according to a Harvardreview of three studies that included
over 200,000 people, those who drink a
few cups of caffeinated coffee a day have
about half the risk of suicide. Two to four
cups seem to be the best amount. The likely
mechanism is that caffeine stimulates the
central nervous system and the release of
key neurotransmitters, thereby lowering
the likelihood of depression. In spite of
that, the researchers dont recommend
drinking more coffee to treat depression
because people already tend to beconsuming the level thats best for them.
It can be a delicate balance. (Harvard
Gazette, 7/24/13)
Vitamin D and Aging
A Dutch study has found that older
people with normal levels of vitamin
D (more than 30 nanograms per mL)
are more likely to be able to perform
some basic tasks of daily life, such as
dressing, walking up stairs and usingpersonal or public transportation. As is
often the case, the study indicates a link
but is not sufcient to conclude a causal
relationship. (NYTimes.com, 7/19/13)
The just-released Life in Motion
calendar honors members of our
community who stay active and t past a
certain agealthough, as it demonstrates,
certain and age may not belong in
the same phrase. It also raises funds
for the Helena YWCA, which
offers life-changing services for
local women. So the calendar
benets our community in
multiple ways, and were
pleased to be a sponsor.
I was particularly touched
to see Sue Bennett on the cover of
the calendar. Sue has been one of our
customers since the 1970s, she worked forus for a time, and she is one of the most
ageless people I know. Ive been less aware
of her life in motion on a bicycle than her
life in stillness as a meditation instructor.
As a yogi (and Mr. January, by the
way) I appreciate the relationship between
motion and stillness. Many things appear
to be separate and opposingactions
and objects, doing and being, waves and
particles, journey and destination, friends
and adversaries, work and playbut they
can also be two sides of the same coin. For
example, often the best way to rest is to
rst exert yourself, and vice versa.
When it comes to living a healthy
life, synergy is the rule rather than the
exception. Nutrients work together;
without one you have nothing. Even
a perfect diet falls short if you
lack rest, peace of mind, social
support and a sense of purpose
and meaning in your life. Much
like game-winning shots in
basketball, magic bullets in the
pursuit of health are illusions that
only appear when everything else is
in place.
Theres a lot written about whetherdiet or exercise matters more in weight
loss. If you have to choose between the
two, it looks like diet wins. But youll get
much better results by choosing both.
Youll get even better results if you
look as well beyond both diet and exercise
to the other dimensions of your life.
Meanwhile, I hope youll buy copies of
Life in Motion for yourself and your loved
ones. You can get them here. Theyre an
inspiration, and all the proceeds go to the
YWCA.

Flathead CherriesDont miss them! by Ed Tyanich, Produce Manager
With August comes one of the most
anticipated events of the year: Flathead
cherries. Theyre usually the Lambert and
Lapin varieties. Ours come from Ramrock
Orchard and are certied organic by the
Montana Department of Agriculture.
That means you can avoid the toxic
residues found in conventional cherries,
which are on the Environmental Working
Groups Dirty Dozen List of the most
contaminated freshproduce crops in the
country. In fact, the USDA
found that conventional
cherries contain residues
of 42 different pesticides,
including 7 that are
possible carcinogens,
22 suspected hormone
disruptors, 7 neurotoxins,
8 developmental or
reproductive toxins and
18 honeybee toxins.
By contrast organic
cherry growers use
a variety of natural
substances such as
neem oil, pyrethrin,
which is derived from
the chrysanthemum, or
cedar-based products
such as CedarCide. All ofthese are considered non-
toxic or minimally toxic.
In addition to tasting
great, cherries have some
powerful health benets. The anthocyanins
and bioavonoids in cherries are believed
to be helpful to people with arthritis and
gout. They also contain several compounds
such as ellagic acid, quercetin and POH
that research has shown to have potential
roles in protecting against cancer. Cherries
are potentially benecial in preventing
migraines, helping to prevent premature
aging and helping you to sleep.
Flathead cherriesare delicious eaten out
of hand, topping your
favorite ice cream or
in a recipe. Cherries
Jubilee, cherry cobbler
and cherry pie are a few
of the more traditional
ways to prepare them.
Some ideas you may not
have thought of are as
an addition to a chicken
salad, added to your
favorite barbecue sauce
or one of my favorites,
Cherry-topped Pork
Chops.
Flathead Cherry
season comes but once a
year. So dont miss it! You
can get them here at the
Real Food Market & Deli,Helenas leading source
of organic and local
produce.
Cherry-topped Pork Chops
Brown the chops in olive oil
along with sliced shallots or red
onion. Remove the chops after
they are browned. Add about
a cup of pitted and chopped
cherries and a cup of broth or other
favorite liquid and a few sprigs
of fresh thyme. Return the chops
to the pan and turn several times
to coat with the cherry mixture.
Remove the chops and cook the
cherries, shallots and liquid until
thickened, adding a tablespoon ortwo of balsamic vinegar to deglaze
the pan at the very end. To serve,
spoon the cherry mixture over the
pork and enjoy.

Americans have dramatically
increased their consumption of sh oil
supplements in the last decade. Thats in
response to a large body of evidence that
omega-3 oils are connected to improved
cognitive function, reduced pain from
arthritis, and reduced fat buildup inarteries, which would be a factor in heart
attacks and stroke. In fact I commonly
recommend to all my patients that they
consume a daily dose of omega-3 fatty
acids.
It has become almost a given that
everyone would benet from these
wonderful fatty acidsuntil now.
Recently the SELECT study, published in
theJournal of the National Cancer Institute,
found that men with the highest level of
EPA and DHA, the two primary omega-3
fatty acids in sh oil, were signicantly
more likely to develop both slow-growing
and aggressive forms of prostate cancer.
This study reportedly conrmed past
reports of the same ndings. According to
the statistical analysis, the increased risk is
44 to 71 percent!
But a different story is suggested by
Ask t Docto: Do oga-3 ols cas postat cac?by Dr. Jeff Roush, ND
Dr. Barry Sears, an acclaimed physician
with decades of experience in fatty
acid research. He argues that science
has established for a long time that
inammation causes cancer and that the
best indicator for inammation is the ratio
of omega-3 fatty acids to arachidonic acid, which is highly inammatory. As he points
out, Japanese men have the highest blood
levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the world,
far surpassing the levels of the men in this
study; yet remarkably they have 10 times
less cancer than is found in the U.S.
Other studies support this notion. A
2004 study in the American Journal of Clinical
Nutrition concluded that prostate cancer
was reduced in groups consuming larger
amounts of omega-3 fatty acids compared
to men consuming the omega-6 fatty acids
more commonly found in vegetable oils.
This rebuttal is somewhat confused
by a 2006 Cochrane review of multiple
studies which showed some discrepancy.
In this review all but one study showed
a benecial or neutral connection with
prostate cancer, and one showed a possible
increase.
What are we
to make of all this
statistical uncertainty?
I think Dr. Sears says
it best: The numbers
in the SELECT trial might be statistically
signicant, but the differences are notclinically relevant. In other words, while
more research is necessary, the benet of
consuming omega-3 fatty acids in either
sh oil supplements or through dietary
consumption of clean cold-water sh
appears to be far-reaching, including
its effects in reducing inammation, a
phenomenon that appears to be driving so
many of the chronic diseases as we know
them, including cancer.
Considering all that we now know
about omega-3 fatty acids, Ill continue to
recommend them to my patients.
