The Fruits of Summerby Ed Tyanich, Produce Manager

Summer brings long, warm days with

plenty of sunshine and with it the peak

of some of the sweetest and juiciest fruits.

Melons, stone fruits and grapes truly

represent the ne avors of summer.

    There few things more refreshing

than chilled melon on a hot day. My great

grandmother always said it wasnt the

    Fourth of July without watermelon,

and Im sure many families have

    that same tradition.

    Nearly everyone

    has eaten cantaloupe,

    honeydew and

    watermelon, but this

    summer be sure to try

    some of the lesser-

    known varieties like

    Galia, Crenshaw, orange

    esh honeydew or

    Charentais.Speaking of melons

    and grandparents, my

    grandmother always put salt

    on cantaloupe and watermelon.

At Real Food, you dont have

to limit your salt options to plain salt.

Andrew Jones, our herb department buyer

has brought in a wonderful selection of

nishing salts, many of which are delicious

when paired with melon. Some of my

personal favorites are Iburi Jio Cherry on

    cantaloupe, Tahaa Vanilla on watermelon

and perhaps my favorite pairing of Fleur

    DeHell and watermelon. Fleur DeHell

has a rather hot afterburn that I nd

an amazing nish to the sweetness of

    watermelon.

    Stone fruits include apricots, peaches,

    plums, nectarines and cherries. My

favorites of the stone fruits are pluots

and donut peaches. Pluots are an apricot-

plum cross that is more plum than apricot.

They are smooth-skinned with a higher

    sugar content than most fruits.

    Pluot varieties come and go

    throughout the summer

season; so be sure to stop

in and ask a Real Food

    produce person for a

    sample and to nd out

    which varieties are in

    stock.

    Donut peaches are

    at in shape, somewhat

resembling a donut shape.Theyre very sweet and

    juicy and are perfect for

eating out of hand. To select a

donut peach, choose one that is

still slightly rm. They have more of

a pear texture when perfectly ripe than do

    their round cousins.

    Grapes are another summer delight,

and the seedless varieties are popular

with children and adults alike. We usually

stock red, green and black seedless grapes.

Although the red and green are better

sellers, the black grapes are my hands-

    down favorite.

    Obesity Declared a Disease

    The American Medical Association has

declared obesity to be a disease, rather

than a mere condition or disorder. This

    doesnt change the associated risks,

such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke

and cancer, but it could affect insurance

    coverage for weight loss programs

and the medical professions sense of

urgency. Unfortunately, it could alsomean a shift toward medical treatment

and away from social and lifestyle

    approaches. (LATimes.com, 6/19/13)

    Just Walk Away

A 15-minute walk after each meal has

been found to be effective in reducing

    blood sugar levels and presumably

forestalling type 2 diabetes, more so

than the same exercise taken all at

once at another time of day. The blood

sugar spikes that come after meals areconsidered harmful, with large dinners

followed by television or sleep the

worst scenario because the high levels

could last for hours. This was a small

study on elderly people, but it makes

    sense. (sciencedaily.com, 6/12/13)

    Four-Minute Fitness

    Norwegian researchers have whittled

down the time it takes to make

    meaningful tness improvements to

four minutes three times a week. Itsdenitely not a weight-losing regime,

but four minutes of exercise at 90

percent of capacity has been shown to

    improve endurance, blood sugar levels

and blood pressure as effectively as

four repetitions of that effort separated

by three minutes of rest. (NYTimes.

    com, 6/19/13)

    Farmed Fish Taking Over

The world now eats more farmed sh

than beef, and this is probably also the

rst year we eat more farmed sh than

wild. These milestones are a reection

    of both health and environmental

concerns, along with the sheer fact

that we may have reached the limit

of natural systems to produce animal

    foods. Solving this problem requires

    rethinking how we produce these

    foods while reducing the demand.

    (Earth Policy Institute, 6/12/13)

    Animals Declared Conscious

    Some leading brain scientists have

    signed the Cambridge Declaration on

    Consciousness, which states that many

animals, even octopi and birds, which

    are genetically distant from humans,

    have conscious and emotional states

that are fundamentally similar to those

of humans. Their conclusion is based

    on similarities in brain structures

    and functions, along with behavioral

evidence, such as self-recognition,and it could have implications for the

treatment of animals used for food.

    (fcmconference.org, 7/7/12)

    GMOs Doomed?

    Genetically modied organisms, such

    as Monsantos herbicide-resistant

    soybeans and insect-killing corn, are

present in most processed U.S. foods,

    including those sweetened with high-

    fructose corn syrup. Biotech companies

have until now successfully preventedthe labeling of engineered foods in the

U.S., but this past months news points

to a reversal of fortune. Unapproved

    engineered wheat showed up in

    Oregon elds, prompting countries

to take actions against imported U.S.

    wheat. Connecticut and Vermont

passed the rst state labeling laws. A

study found higher levels of severe

    stomach inammation in GMO-fed

rats. Nearly 2 million people petitioned

the FDA to not approve engineeredsalmon. Chipotle Mexican Grill became

the rst fast-food company to commit

    to labeling and eventually eliminating

    GMOs in its foods.

Dr. Liz Cavin is alicensed naturopathic

    The Supreme Court recently ruled

on the patenting of human genes. To my

    laymans understanding, the decision

    basically reafrms that patents should

apply to human inventions, and not to

    discoveries of things in nature.

That may sound like a really

good thing. After all, what would

the world be like if Newton had

gotten a patent on gravity? Inthis particular case it means that

tests for breast cancer genes will

be a lot cheaper than they would

be otherwise, since without a patent

there will be no monopoly and no license

fees. Its hard to argue that thats not a

    good thing.

On the other hand, the court drew a

distinction between DNA as it exists in

nature, which would not be patentable,

and a puried or modied form, which

    might be considered a patentable

    invention. If the naturally-occurring item

cant be patented but the invention can,

    where does that lead us?

It puts prot on the side of man-made

    things rather than natural things.

Does this sound familiar? It should.

    Just as with genes, naturally-occurring

items such as foods, vitamins, minerals

and herbs cant be patented like drugs.

They tend to be a lot cheaper than drugs.

Because theres less prot to be made, they

    also get less research.

    But because of that

    prot incentive a drug

    company may take

    a natural remedy

    that works

    perfectly well,

    isolate what issupposedly its

    active constituent,

    make an articial

    variant that does

not work as well or has

side effects, patent it and spend

a load of money advertising it, funding

research on it and paying doctors to give

    educational seminars on it.

Then of course because of the lack

of research on the natural item, they can

start pointing ngers at natural healers

and funding lobbyists to get the laws and

    regulations on their side.

    Im painting a black-and-white

picture, but it gives you an idea of why

you might want to prefer real, natural

things over man-made. Evolution is not a

nished process, but Mother Nature has

been at work a long time, and we are still

wondering and marveling at her solutions.

As we announced last month, Dr.Christine Horner gave her Helena talk on

preventing breast cancer on June 17th. A

plastic surgeon who succeeded in passing

a federal law to require insurance coverage

    of reconstructive breast surgery after

mastectomies, she later chose to promote

prevention for its greater impact on

    womens lives.

The rst part of her lively presentation

discussed risk factors that lead to breast

    cancer.

She started with a breakdown of a fast-

food meal and pointed to the qualities of a

hamburger, bun, French fries, soda and/or

a milkshake. Fast-food burgers contain lots

of saturated fat, a storehouse for chemicals

that cows may have gotten from pesticide

and herbicide residues in their food. These

chemicals can act like estrogen, which

causes breast cells to divide more readily.

Greater cell division in breast tissue can bea risk factor for cancer. (Rapidly dividing

cells are more likely to become cancerous

because there is greater chance a mutation

will occur when they divide, potentially

causing abnormal cells to form.) Dairy

cows are often given recombinant bovine

    growth hormone (rBGH), which increases

insulin-like growth factor levels (IGF) in

their milk. According to Dr. Horner the

IGF is passed on to humans, where it

interacts with estrogen to stimulate breast

    cell proliferation.

Dr. Horner proceeded to discuss the

impact of a fast-food meal on insulin.

Preventing Breast CancerA Review of Dr. Christine Horners Lecture

    by Liz Cavin, Naturopathic Physician

Produced by the pancreas, insulin carries

glucose to our cells where its used for fuel.Consumption of saturated animal fat, white

bread hamburger buns and soda beverages

has the potential to increase the pancreass

production of insulin. High insulin levels

cause cells to divide quickly. Insulin also

increases the blood level of estrogen that

can become bound to breast tissue. When

too much estrogen binds to breast cell

tissue it causes cells to rapidly divide.

The French fries in a fast food mealare cooked in poor-quality oil containing

    trans-fatty acids. Trans-fatty acids create

free radicals which can damage cellular

DNA. When cells divide to create new

cells, DNA is crucial for proper cell

replication. Damaged DNA can lead to the

production of abnormal cells that become

cancer cells. The soda or milkshake is

problematic because of the sugar content.

Sugar increases inammation and has been

shown to blunt immune cells responses

for several hours after it is consumed.

    Stopping cancer requires active immune

    Evolution

    is not a fnished

    process, but Mother

    Nature has been at

work a long time, andwe are still wondering

    and marveling at her

    solutions.

cells that can identify and stop cancercells in their tracks.

I just touched the surface regarding

risk factors for breast cancer that Dr.

Horner discussed. I must admit this

part of her lecture was a bit unnerving.

Luckily Dr. Horner did give us hope by

discussing many foods that have cancer

    protective and preventive attributes.

    She emphasized that even one

could cut risk in half and

    that these protectors

    work together in a way

    that multiplies their

    benets.

    Some key breast

    protective foods she

    discussed are omega-3

    fatty acids, axseeds, soy,

    turmeric and green tea.

    Omega-3 fatty acids help the

body make anti-inammatory substances.Omega-3 fatty acids are found in organ

meats, sh, axseed oil and camelina oil.

Not only are omega-3 fatty acids anti-

    inammatory, but they help decrease

the rate at which breast cells divide

in response to estrogen. Dr. Horner

    particularly likes axseeds because they

    provide cancer protection beyond the

oil expressed from the seeds. Ground

    axseeds contain high amounts of

lignans, compounds that give plants their

stiff structure. Dr. Horner explained that

lignans help decrease levels of insulin-

like growth factor, reduce the amount of

estrogen produced by fat cells, decreasebreast density, block estrogen receptors in

breast tissue and act as anti-oxidants. She

believes so strongly in the protective ability

of lignans that she developed a lignan-

containing product called Brevail, which is

    available at our store.

Dr. Horner calls green tea the

    number-one anticancer beverage.

    She particularly likes green tea

    because it contains several

    protective anti-oxidant

    and anti-inammatory

    constituents. It helps

    support healthy function

    of enzymes in the liver

    used in its detoxication

    pathways. Its important

    to have healthy liver

    detoxication to protect our

    cells from potential carcinogenic

chemicals found in non-organic foods, impure water and cigarette smoke.

Of the protective foods, spices and teas

that Dr. Horner discussed turmeric took

front seat along with green tea. She feels

    that turmeric possesses more anticancer

properties than any other healing spice.

The active constituent in turmeric is

    called curcumin. Dr. Horner explained

that it acts to prevent cancer by lowering

    inammation, stimulating immune

responses and helping slow the rate that

breast cells divide. Turmeric helps the liver

    break down harmful potentially cancer-

causing chemicals we get exposed to via

    food, water and air.

Soy is an important breast cancerprotective food. Dr. Horner explained that

    it decreases tumor initiation, promotion

and progression in breast cancer. Soy

    contains a phytoestrogen, genistein, which

attaches to estrogen receptors in breast

tissue and causes breast cells to divide at

slower pace. Dr. Horner explained that the

benet from genistein is only gained only

when soy is consumed as a whole food.

When genistein is taken in a concentrated

form found in supplements, it has the

potential to cause breast cell proliferation.

To gain the breast-protective benets of

soy, Dr. Horner suggests it be eaten in the

form of edamame, dry roasted soybeans,

    tempeh, tofu, miso and natto.

    Dr. Horners presentation was

educational and entertaining. I found her

to be very knowledgeable and passionate.

    Im grateful that the Thermography
