he kitchen is theheart o the home, especially duringthe holiday seasonwhen amilies andriends gather toshare time-hon-

ored recipes. Wouldnt it be the bestgit o all to have all the essentialsyou need in your kitchen to make themost out o everything coming outoyour kitchen?

Marta Tice, a certied interior de-signer and a proessional member othe American Society o Interior De-signers, and whose Home Improve-ment column will debut in Decem-ber, answered that question. Hereare her top ten suggestions or wayshomeowners can improve their kitch-ens and make the hol idays less stress-

    ul and more enjoyable.

    NewGarbaGeDisposal

Great or the environment and ahuge time saver, disposals grind upand fush ood particles down yourpipes, thereby lessening the amounto garbage you accumulate each day.Garbage disposal units come in twobasic ormsbatch eed and continu-ous. Batch-eed models operate onlywhen the disposal lid is engaged. Con-

tinuous models turn on with the ficko a switch and run until you turn theswitch o. Neither is completely si-lent, but models with larger cases areoten better insulated and quieter.

You will have to have a plumberinstall it and i you do not have aswitch already there, youll have tohire an electrician, says Tice. Typi-cally you do not use garbage dispos-als where you have a septic eld, but

or the city where you are renovat-ing older homes, most kitchens al-ready have a garbage disposal so itshouldnt be a problem. My tip oranyone using a disposal is to not putin corncobs, eggshells or ood that isnot biodegradable. I you use it con-servatively you will preserve the lieo the disposal. Just make sure youbuy a name brand and get one witha warranty.

Danielle Morris, Showroom Con-sultant at Ferguson Enterprises, Inc.said that Insinkerator oers a modelspecically or septic systems. Witheach run, it injects a small amount oenzyme that helps break down oodwaste even more.

    NewDishwasher

The average lie o a dishwasher is10-13 years, so i yours was purchasedbeore 1998, its time to get a newone. I youre replacing one, be sureto measure the space accurately as theright size and t are essential. Also, check to see how they are mounted,as models that are attached to theunderside o countertops dont workwell with granite, quartz and con-crete counters. In that case, youll

need dishwashers that mount to theside o the cabinets.

I you are going to match your oth-er appliances, make sure the colorsare the same. White is easy, but somestainless models may not match yourother stainless appliances. EnergyStar-qualied models use 31 percentless energy and 33 percent less waterthan conventional machines.

There are so many new optionsor dishwashers, said Tice. Thereare even double-drawer dishwashers

or people who only want to washglasses. Some o the dishwashers areraised higher or people with badbacks, which is ideal or aging inplace. Also dishwashers with a stain-less interior have less corroding andless rust and typically last longer. The key or buying any appliance isto make sure you buy it rom a dealerthat is reputable with a warranty anda good service department.

Morris added that dishwasherswith a stainless interior are also qui-eter, retain heat better and dry better.

    UpGraDe

    to Gas or

    DUal FUel

Gas or electric? Morris says thereis something to be said or both. Gasis better on the cook top, but electricis better in the oven, especially orbaking. Dual uel is the best o bothworlds.

For homeowners who have gaslines in their area, its a matter o de-ciding whether to pay to have the gasline run into the kitchen. Expect topay several hundred dollars to havethis done. Also consider that havingthe pipe snake up on the outside othe house can be unsightly, but it canbe camouaged with siding, thus in-curring additional cost.

Tice preers a gas range to electric.I have ound the ood tastes better.Plus the big advantage with gas iswhen your power goes out, you cancook on a gas top.

Why gas over electric? Morris saysgas provides much better control, al-lowing a very low ame to a very highame, and it delivers heat instantly. There is also an advantage to upgrad-ing to a convection oven.

Convection moves the air/heatthroughout the oven providing evencooking on all racks thus cookingbetter and tasting better, said Mor-ris. It also cuts down on cookingtemperature and cooking time by ap-proximately 25 percent.

I youre sticking with electric, thegood news is that nearly all-electricranges now eature smooth, ceramicglass cook top designs rather than theold coil burners. The sealed-burnerdesigns are relatively easy to clean.

Newer ranges oer more burn-ers. Many electric cook tops eaturea fth burner, some used to keepood warm and others that serve as abridge between two other burners orgriddle and roasting pans.

Tice said i you are happy with theootprint o your kitchen and justwant to give it a acelit, you havemany options or new countertopsrom granite to soapstone to Formicato concrete.

Granite is typically more ex-pensive but its gotten more com-petitive in pricing, as there are more

companies that have opened inCharlottesville, Tice said, As orease o cleaning, i the granite is notsealed, it can stain (particularly wine)but thats typically the lighter granite. Most people go with darker suraces.Granite is extremely durableunlessyou take a hammer to it. Ceramic iscost-eective, but then you have thegrout joints, that over time, showstains even i theyre sealed. Anotherapplication that is cost-eective isgranite tiles. There is an epoxy groutthat is used that can be dark so itdoesnt show the stain. Also you canuse the tiles as a back-splash.

Morris said an alternative to gran-ite is quartz. It is extremely scratch-resistant, stain-resistant and heat-resistant as a non-absorbent andnon-porous surace.

tasks. Installing recessed or tracklights over sinks and ood prep areasare one way; installing under cabinetlights or better clean up and recipereading is another. You can add pen-dant lights over counters to bringthe light closer to you, or to jazz upa space, use ambient lighting such aswall sconces and add dimmer switch-es to control the ambiance.

Not only do dimmers create am-biance, but they save you electricityand extend the bulb lie, said Mor-ris. Just by dimming your lights 10percent, you save 10 percent in elec-tricity, and your bulb lasts 2x longer. And dimming by 50 percent will saveyou 40 percent electricity and last20x longer.

Morris added that LED lights arebecoming very popular, especially orunder cabinet lighting, and will bethe next big wave.

    iNstall New

FloorsOne o the most dramatic ways to

improve a kitchen is to replace theooring. There are ooring optionsor every taste, liestyle and budget.

While its popularity has dimin-ished in recent years, vinyl ooring isstill one o the best options or busyamilies. Theyre easy to clean be-cause you have very ew, i any, seamsthat trap dirt. They come in all colorsand patterns and many very cleverlymimic the look o stone.

Marmoleum ooring is made onatural fbers like linseed oil and cot-ton and has no chemical umes (ogassing), said Tice. It is extremelydurable and requently used in com-mercial applications. It has a longerlie span than vinyl and requires pe-riodic waxing. It comes in sheets andtile squares. The bright colors and va-riety o swirl like patterns make thisproduct a popular choice.

For durability, ceramic oors wintop honors. Because they are fredat a high temperature, they are ex-tremely hard, durable, and resistantto stain and moisture. Unglazed ce-ramic oors take on the earth toneo their clay mixture, while glazed

ceramic has a glass coating in almostevery color. There are a ew thingsto consider. I you drop somethingheavy, it will crack the ceramic, Ticewarns. Again you have the issue othe grout staining over time. Its coldand its hard, so people with arthri-tis should choose another type oooring. However, some people likethe ceramic so much that they opt tohave radiant heat installed under thetiles. This type o oor is easier to putin with new construction than dur-ing a remodel o an older home.

I youre looking or a green op-tion, cork oors ft the bill. Harvestedrom tree bark, this sustainable prod-uct is waterproo and compressible, making it very comortable. Mostoors come pre-fnished, but requireresealing every 3-4 years with a natu-ral wax and polyurethane sealant.

Cork oors are very popularnow, said Tice. Theyre very du-rable, resilient and last a long time.Even i it chips, the cork goes all theway through. Typically theyre calledengineered oors where the cork it-sel is on a platorm and its all onepiece. Thereore theres no sagging orbuckling underneath. It does ade instrong sunlight, so i you have a lot osun in a kitchen, you will notice thatit will ade quicker by the window, but it can always be stained again.

Finally, hardwood ooring is idealor an open oor plan where a singleooring style continues into otherrooms. Kitchen hardwoods are dura-

ble and low-maintenance, and prefn-ished products are also moisture-re-sistant. Bamboo, like hardwood, alsois becoming increasingly popular. Itstough, durable and sustainable.

I your kitchen cabinets need up-dating and you cannot aord havingthem replaced, reacing is the bestoption. No cabinets are ripped outand the layout remains the same.Reacing means replacing the cabi-net doors, the drawer ronts and thehardware ramework.

While this is something homeown-ers can tackle on their own, Tice saidthere are cabinetmakers in town thatwill do the work or you. I wouldmake sure the box itsel and theshelving is in good condition, sheadvised. Sometimes when you reacethe doors you have to make sure theshelving is new as well. That also willgive you the opportunity to changeout the hardware as well.

An efcient kitchen should havestorage as well and counter space.Whenever possible, hang it! You caninstall shelving units on unused wallareas, or add narrow shelves to theinsides o cabinet doors (ideal orspices). Hang your pots rom a ceil-ing-mounted pot rack and put hookson the back o your doors or broomsand mops. You also can get pullouttrays or pantries or the cabinets tomake it easier to access utensils andpots and pans and such, said Tice.I you have a small kitchen and youwant more counter space, get a mag-

A walk through stores like Crate& Barrel is a stroll through kitchengadget antasyland. There are somany really cool kitchen toys tohelp you every step o the way. Thereare neat prep utensils, such as a drip-less turkey baster; baking tools like

a pie weight chain; cooking utensilslike lid pot clips and at separators;serving utensils like turkey liters;kitchen helpers like herb scissors andtoast tongs; and every kind o ther-mometer you can think o, includingdigital wine thermometers. renovation process.

The grounds feature a pool and 6 outbuildings

are original: the smokehouse and a larger stru

could be converted into a studio or guest cotta

itself perfectly to equestrian or vineyard use. A

additional 190 acres are also available.

MONTICOLA is part of Albemarle Countys rich his

Gabrielle English rsttook an interest inearly American histo-ry at the age o 8. Sherst impersonated

Thomas Jeersons daughter Patsyat age 15, and today portrays earlyAmericans ull-time at Colonial Wil-liamsburg. Longtime Charlottesvilleresident Mark Belisles was studyingearly local history at seminary whenhe originated the Jeerson Thanks-giving Festival in 1994.

It emerged out o my love orAmerican history, Belisles says today.I was in the middle o doing my dis-sertation on the study o Charlottes-villes history. Out o that emerged aestival designed to let the commu-nity hear its history and its stories ina way thats entertaining or all ages;that makes history come alive as peo-ple interact with historic characters.

Friday and Saturday, November 19-20, Gabrielle, alias Patsy, and Mark, alias Patsys contemporary, pastorCharles Clay, will join hundreds oother early American history enthusi-asts or the 17th annual local estival,on the Downtown Mall and Omni Ho-tel. Now known as the CharlottesvilleHoliday Tradition, the celebrationconsists o three events: the GrandIllumination on the Downtown MallFriday evening, the Holiday HeritageParade the next morning, and the Je-erson Thanksgiving Dinner and Ballthat evening at the Omni.

    The First Thanksgiving

The rst Thanksgiving celebra-tion took place in 1621 in Plymouth,Massachusetts, as the Pilgrims eastedtogether with Squanto and other Na-tive Americans who had taught themhow to cultivate corn and other cropsin the New World. Or at least thatswhat we learned in school. But whileits true that Pilgrim Governor Wil-liam Bradord proclaimed a day oThanksgiving in 1621, and anotherin 1623, the Pilgrims were probablynot the rst to establish an annualThanksgiving tradition. In 1619, Cap-tain John Woodleee brought 38 set-tlers to the Berkeley Hundred in theVirginia colony, sailing rom Bristol,England on the ship Margaret withinstructions rom the owners thatthe day o our ships arrival . . . shallbe yearly and perpetually kept as a dayo Thanksgiving. A year and 17 daysbeore the Pilgrims set oot o theMayfower, these brand new Virgin-ians gave thanks.

    Thanksgiving Becomes

    a Tradition

The Continental Congress is-sued the rst national thanksgivingproclamation in 1777, recommend-

ing the colonies ollow suit. Duringhis rst year as governor o Virginia,Thomas Jeersons signed a proc-lamation at the suggestion o theContinental Congress to observe aday o Thanksgiving and Prayer onDecember 9, 1779. Ten years later, atthe request o Congress, PresidentGeorge Washington recommendeda day o public thanksgiving andprayer, to be observed by acknowl-edging with grateul hearts the manyand signal avors o Almighty God, es-pecially by aording them an oppor-

tunity peaceably to establish a ormo government or their saety andhappiness. Washington set the dateo the rst Thanksgiving or the newnation as Thursday, November 26,1789. President John Adams also is-sued Thanksgiving proclamations, in1798 and 1799, and President James

Madison issued three, although onlyone was acted on.

These early observations onlymade ocial what was a commonand religious practice in the 17th and18th centuries, the setting aside o aday to thank God or blessings indi-vidual and communal and not withgames and pumpkin pie, but withprayer and asting.

Not until President Abraham Lin-coln, in the midst o the Civil War in1863, proclaimed the nal Thursdayin November a national Thanksgiv-

ing Day, did the holiday become anannual national event.

In 1939, President Franklin D.Roosevelt moved the celebration romthe ourth to the third Thursday othe month. The idea was to help re-tailers by lengthening the Christmasshopping season. The move was notpopular and lasted only two years, but the holiday shopping season hasbeen extending backward ever sinceand now begins well beore Hallow-een, as every mailman knows. Dontblame FDR.

    Giving Thanks in Cville

Back on November 29, 1928 Presi-dent Calvin Coolidge celebratedThanksgiving here in Charlottesville, attending services at the First BaptistChurch on Main Street and eating abuet lunch at the Carrs Hill homeo University o Virginia president

    By Ken Wilson

Edwin Alderman. The president andrst lady then headed to LambethField or the Virginia-North Carolinaootball game, but let ater the rstquarter, sparing the home team addedembarrassment when it lost 24-20.

Thanksgiving Day 2010 is Thurs-day, November 25, but the amily holi-day season begins on Friday November19 rom 5:00 -7:00 p.m. with holidaymusic, childrens activities, and thelighting o the community Christmastree at Central Place on the DowntownMall. The countdown to the GrandIllumination begins at 5:00 p.m., andCharlottesville Mayor Dave Norris willthrow the switch at 6:00 p.m.

Saturday, November 20 at 10:00a.m., the Holiday Heritage Paradeon the Mall will boast 100-some par-ticipants, including marching bands, members o animal rescue units, andestival queens and princesses. Smallfoats built over gol carts will com-memorate Virginia history and heri-

tage, as will the presence o histori-cal gures like presidents Jeerson,Madison and Monroe, and one otherhistorical gure, Santa Claus, whohas promised to come by aterwardand stay the aternoon. Horse drawncarriages will oer rides rom noonto 5:00 p.m. or a small charge.

Saturday evenings dinner and ballin the Omni Hotel will be set back in

1801, at the beginning o Jeersons

presidency. Dinner ($30) will be at

6:00 p.m., and the ball will ollow

    at 7:30 p.m. ($5 per person or $15

    per amily). Costumes are encour-

aged but not required, and diners

will share tables with, and have the

chance to question, a historic char-

    acter presidents Jeerson, Madi-

    son, or Monroe, Merriwether Lewis

and William Clark, among them. It

stands to reason that the time-travel-

ing dignitaries may have a ew ques-

    tions o their own.

    Gabrielle English will address the

crowd in character as Martha, Patsy

Jeerson, speaking about her role in

her athers lie. Because her moth-

er, also named Martha, died beore

Thomas took oce, Patsy was host-

ess and First Lady during her athers

eight-year term in oce. Patsy was

very involved with her ather, but

there is not a lot said about that, Ga-

    brielle say. Documentaries leave her

out a great deal. When his wie passed

away, his daughter was always by his

side. Reading his letters, I nd it asci-

nating, how close they really were.

At the ball, the presidents will greet

partiers, and Patsy and the Cuckoo

    Assembly Dancers rom Louisa will

    perorm and teach period dances.
