Bringing container plantsinside for the winter

It will soon betime to move tenderplants indoors forthe winter. Thefirst step for thoseplants growing infull sun is to movethem to a partiallyshaded location sothey can beginadapting to lowerindoor light. Theother important fac-tor right now is torid your plants ofany pests that canbecome a problem ifmoved indoors.

Spider mites andmealy bugs are twovery difficult insectsto control. Heavymealy bug activityis easy to spotbecause of the pres-ence of a white, cot-tony mass, often-times found on theunderside of leavesor in the Y betweenleaf and stem. Thiscottony mass iswhat makes controldifficult as it pro-tects the insectsand their eggs frominsecticides.Carefully disruptthis mass (whilesmashing as manyof the pests as pos-sible) and thentreat the plant thor-oughly with aninsecticide labeledfor control of mealybug. Complete cov-erage is very impor-tant, paying closeattention to theundersides of theleaves. Follow labeldirections closely,giving special atten-tion to the suggest-ed retreatmentinterval.

Unfortunately,

even the most wellexecuted insecticideapplication plansare only moderatelysuccessful for thispest. If a plant hasmore than just afew mealy bugs, youshould give someconsideration to dis-posing of the plant,especially if youhave other valuablehouseplants. Ifmealy bugs gain afoothold on yourindoor plants, youwill have a real bat-tle on your hands.At the very least,try to quarantineaffected plants for afew months to makesure you have suc-cessfully eradicatedthis pest.

Spider mites arealso a problem,partly because theyare very difficult tosee with the nakedeye. Most garden-ers realize they arepresent only whenthe webbingbecomes visible. Bythis time, the mitepopulation is wellestablished andcontrol becomesmore difficult.Much as the mealybug has protectivemeasures in place,the spider mite pro-tects itself withvery fine webbing.

Before bringingplants indoors,check for spidermite presence bypatting a few leavessharply on a pieceof plain whitepaper. Live miteswill fall off andappear as verysmall specks. If youlook closely, you cansee them crawlingaround on thepaper.

Begin by pruningoff any plant partsthat have webbingor a large popula-tion of mites. Thenext step is to use awater hose andspray off the leaveswith a good blast ofwater. Lastly, fol-low up with aninsecticide labeledfor this pest. Pleasenote that each ofthese pests is diffi-cult to treat and allcommon insecti-cides will not belabeled for controlof both. Please fol-low the same proto-col as instructed formealy bugs untilyou are certain con-trol has beenachieved.

Pruning heavilyalso has the addedbenefit of makingthe plant easier tohandle. A properly

Whether you’regrowing a fall foodgarden or tendingyour backyard tropi-cals, frost changeseverything. When itarrives, and howcold those first earlymornings are, dic-tate how long plantswill survive out-doors. First frost is afigment of the earlymorning, and thecoldest point isalways that hourjust before dawnwhen the freezecomes.

If you study thelay of frost on youryard or property,you’ll find it maynot occur uniformly.At night, cold air islike water flowingdownhill to pool inlow lying areas _ aphenomenon called“cold air drainage.”Plants in thesespots will experienceearlier and moreserious frost dam-age. So even if theselow spots are moreprotected from theelements andwarmer in theevening, they areindeed colder in theearly morning afterwarm air rises and

is replaced by coldmoving downslopeduring the nighthours.

Another placefrost may be absentis beneath shrubsand trees becausethe tree canopytraps and holdswarmer air throughthe dawn hours.Gardeners tradition-ally move their ten-der potted plantsunder trees or patiocovers to protectfrom a light frost.This is the examplethat inspires spe-cialized textile cov-ers that hold warmair next to the plantall night long.

These modernfabrics share similarcharacteristics thatmake them ideal forprotecting plants insitu. First the mate-rial must be light-weight in order toavoid crushingplants and distort-ing the foliage.Second they mustbe porous enough toallow rain to comethrough and reachthe soil. Third theymust be denseenough to keepwarmth insideunlike sheet plasticthat offers no insu-lation, blocks oxy-

gen transfer, andsupports copiouscondensation on theinside surfaces.

For individualplants or those inpots that need justa few nights’ protec-tion, the best choicefor protection is thePlanket. In the pastI have used bedsheets and otherfabrics to protectmy plants frombrief frost, butthese are heavy anddifficult to anchoragainst wind here.Plankets come inmany sizes andshapes with handydrawstrings thatallow you to toss itover the plant, pullthe cord around thebottom and tie itoff. You’ll find the

Planket sold inmost retail homeimprovement anddiscount stores, butto learn more andsee the range ofproducts check thewebsite atwww.theplanket.com.

Fromwww.groworganic.com comes a similarproduct called a“frost bag,” which isa large bag made ofrow cover materialthat allows waterand light to passthrough while insu-lating the plantfrom frost. Unlikethe Planket, whichcuts off light to theplant, frost blanketsallow up to about 80percent light trans-mission so plants

stay active in mar-ginally hardy areas.It’s the perfect way

to help those lategreen tomatoesripen outdoors or

protect your largerpotted plants suchas dwarf citrus.

By David W. Myers

All prospectivehome buyers shouldfirst get preapprovedfor a mortgage. It’sbest to seek the high-est loan amount pos-sible.

DEAR MR.MYERS: We areplanning to buyour first homesoon, so we are fol-lowing your adviceto get preapprovedfor a mortgage.However, we havereceived some con-flicting advice frommy father and thereal estate agentwe expect to use.My dad says weshould apply for assmall of a loan aspossible to improveour chances of get-ting approved. Ouragent, though, sayswe should ask forthe highest amountpossible, in part tobroaden our choic-es among the prop-erties that areavailable. What doyou think weshould do?

ANSWER: Followthe realty agent’s

advice, and ask forthe highest amountpossible.

Buyers alwaysshould get preap-proved for a mortgagebefore starting theirhouse-hunting trek, inpart because it makesa seller more confi-dent that a proposeddeal can be completedsuccessfully and canclose quickly. Thatputs a buyer who hasbeen preapproved isin a lot better bar-gaining position thana buyer who hasn’t.

In reality, the bankor mortgage brokerthat you intend to useto finance the transac-tion will ultimatelydecide how much youcan borrow based onyour income, creditscore, available downpayment and otherfactors. But youragent is correct: Youshould ask for thehighest amount youcan get in order tobroaden your proper-

ty choices, as long asyou’re confident thatyou comfortably canhandle the highermonthly mortgagepayments that wouldbe required.

As a bonus, havingaccess to the highestpreapproval amountpossible gives you afinancial cushion tohelp pay for anyunanticipated expens-es that seeminglyalways arise after asale agreement is ten-tatively reached --such as higher-than-expected closing costs-- or to fix up thehome after you movein.

* * *DEAR MR.

MYERS: Is it truethat homeownersin Hawaii can takea tax deduction foreach of the treesthat grow on theirproperty?

ANSWER: Yes, pro-vided the tree is clas-sified by authorities

as an “exceptionaltree” based either onits age, size, rareness,historic value or ahandful of other crite-ria. The program wascreated in 1975 bystate legislators in aneffort to preserve theisland paradise’sunique beauty.

The sizable deduc-tions are nothing tothrow a pineapple at.Property owners cantake up to a $3,000income-tax write-offfor each of their treesthat are deemedexceptional to coverthe cost of theirmaintenance --chores like pruningand fertilizing them.

There are a coupleof strings attached.For starters, thededuction can betaken only once everythree years. In addi-tion, work must bedone by a certifiedarborist.Nonetheless, morethan 1,000 trees have

qualified for “excep-tional” status sincethe program began,and the number isgrowing every year.

* * *REAL ESTATE

TRIVIA: Mainelegislators levy aspecial 1.5 centtax per pound onfarmers and deal-ers who grow ordistribute blue-berries, the state’sofficial fruit. Therevenue is used topromote the crop

and fund agricul-tural research.

* * *DEAR MR.

MYERS: What isconsidered an“excellent” FICOcredit score?

ANSWER: Fair,Isaac Corp., the cre-ator of the FICOscore that’s used inabout 90 percent ofall lending decisionsby banks, use a con-sumer’s past andcurrent financialinformation to rank

them in a rangebetween 301 and850. The higher, thebetter -- and thelower interest ratethat you’ll likely payfor a mortgage, carloan or credit card.

Generally, a FICOscore of 750 or moreis considered “excel-lent.” A score of 700to 749 is “good,”650 to 699 is “fair,”and 600 to 649 is“poor.” “Bad” creditis anything below600.

Bookshelves areone of the mostunderutilized piecesof furniture in ahome. Stuffed withscattered books,papers and DVDs,they can be a com-plete eyesore. Butstyled in a chic waywith just the rightnumber of acces-sories, they canmake a big state-ment.

When it came todecorating the liv-ing room in my1930s-era Tudorhouse, the book-shelves were thelast things I tack-led. Here’s why: Youcan use the items ina bookshelf to bringall the other colorsin your living roomtogether.

When I moved in,I had a cornflowerblue sectional, out-dated nightstandsand not a windowtreatment to speakof. Because I wasstarting fromscratch, I was ableto create a com-pletely new vision.

The first thing Ibought was a largearea rug filled withaqua, yellow, creamand dusty rose.

Together, the colorsare very spalikeand calming and Iused that through-out my decor (likewith a cream-col-ored linen couch,yellow lace-linedcurtains and aquatiebacks).

For my built-inbookshelves, Ipainted the back ofthe shelves tomatch the samelight aqua color inthe rug. Since I onlyneeded a smallamount, I got awaywith using a sam-ple-sized container,which cost all of $7.

From there, Istrategically placedbooks and acces-sories to create acohesive look.Follow these tips tomake over a book-shelf in your ownhome.

1. Start with a

theme. Although Ihave some randomaccessories to keepthings from feelingtoo matchy-matchy,my overall look isnautical. Betweenthe aqua walls, fauxcoral, whale crib-bage board and seasponge, most acces-sories have a com-mon thread.

2. Place yourbooks first. A stackof heavy, largebooks can anchor abottom shelf,whereas groups ofsmaller books canbe placed sporadi-cally on othershelves. Althoughit’s called a book-shelf, placing toomany books canmake the shelf lookheavy and clut-tered. Interspersingaccessories and pic-ture frames breaksit up.

3. Display yourcollections. Whetherit’s a grouping ofwhite vases orseashells, like mine,or souvenirs fromyour travels, yourcollectibles can real-ly shine inside abookshelf.

4. Pay attentionto color. Painting orwallpapering theback of a bookshelfcan add a bold popof pattern and color.Stick with the samemood of colors forthe items you placein the shelf.

5. Don’t overstuff!When it comes tocurating your book-shelf ’s contents,play around withpositioning andadding and remov-ing accessories.Snap a few picturesalong the way toremember arrange-ments you liked.
