Transcript of Ready SetConnect! Our newest TPC Ministry...
May 2013
Building intentional relationships is part of our TPC Vision Frame, mission strategy and values. How we
deepen friendships, nourish a culture of hospitality and remind our congregation that visitors and guests
matter is essential to any church. And while this welcome message may seem apparent, there is more
involved in implementing a truly successful welcoming ministry.
On January 19, a Leadership Retreat was held for the purpose of strategizing how to best assimilate new
individuals and families into the life of our congregation. At the conclusion of this retreat, the decision was
made to move forward with Connect – our new TPC Ministry to better welcome and connect new individuals
and families into the life of our church.
Did you know? 40% of guest make up their minds about a church within the
first 10 minutes.
Building upon ideas from other churches and resources, a Connect training was held on Saturday, April 13.
The training emphasized the purpose of the Connect ministry and presented practical ways to implement the
Connect Ministry within TPC. Attendees were also encouraged to discuss areas of concern and opportunities
for improvement.
The Connect Ministry (like any welcoming ministry) is a commitment for the entire congregation. As
newcomers try to find their way into our church, it is up to all of us to communicate an ambiance and an
environment for first time guests.
What’s next for Connect? Future training dates to follow!
We would like to invite you to become a part of Connect ministry team here at TPC! We welcome
suggestions and ideas for moving this important ministry forward. Check the bulletin for future training dates
and times. For in developing a successful Connect welcoming ministry, we begin to see ourselves as
others do.
Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. Romans 15:7

Author and New Testament Professor Jerry Camery-Hoggatt, Ph.D. has spent over a decade writing this novel that uses a fact-based fictional narrative to follow six first-century Romans who came together to discuss the gospel as Mark was writing it. These diverse characters each have their own dramatic storylines steeped in the history and culture
of the time.

For us as Presbyterians, a portion of the cost goes to having representation in the General Assembly, covers administrative expenses of the Synod, and also for the leadership and ministry of our local Los Ranchos Presbytery. Per Capita also helps fund the cost of our judicial process, legal costs related to property, and various fiduciary accountability of finances, support

“ARTS” (short for “Adults Redefining ThemSelves) is much more than a social group. ARTS was formed as a part of TPC Fellowship to develop deeper friendships and discover ways to support each other as we began to experience the next stages of life. ARTS is composed of singles
and couples who are in the later years of career, or are looking towards retirement or are already retired, or who are no longer dominantly “child centered” (i.e. children are now 18+ years old), or who have more discretionary time, or who are seeking new careers and/or exploring

Cactus Gardens Halfway
Home -by Dick Aced
As you approach two apartment
structures on Chapman Avenue in
Garden Grove, you are struck by
some plants in a plot situated
between the two buildings. These
plants are cactus of various sizes
with one plant standing over six
feet tall. How ironic and yet
symbolic. Cactus plants are the
primary plants between the two
buildings that house Cactus
Garden Halfway House. How
ironic and symbolic it is that the
first things you see when you
approach the buildings are large
needles, even before you meet
the residents who are recovering
from drug and alcohol addictions.
I visited Cactus Gardens on
April 12 and this is where I was
able to meet two counselors and
five or six residents. This is
where the tough work of
becoming clean begins. The first
thing with this recovery process is
that the two counselors are
graduates of the Cactus Gardens
program. One has been sober for
over 17 years and the other for
over 5 years. Presently the two
counselors are working with 12
residents and there is a counselor
on site 24 hours a day, 7 days
a week.
The young men that I met were
very engaging and were quite
interested in TPC. They spoke
about their dreams but not about
their problems. They expressed
their great appreciation for the
baskets of goods that I brought
from our collection for them. They
also expressed their desire to
somehow show their appreciation
to TPC. During the discussions I
also learned that the residents are
open to the Christian message
and that there are periodic Bible
studies at the residence.
In the not too distant future I will
return. I am collecting thing that
these men need especially
towels, bedding, and furniture that
is in good shape. They also
would like books and if possible
computer equipment. If anyone in
the church would like to donate
things, I would be glad to take
them, store them at my home and
periodically take what I have to
Cactus Gardens. If we can make
this a continuing local outreach
such as the Solano Food Bank,
we can help a number of men
trying to adjust their lives. If you
have items to donate, questions
or are interested in helping,
please contact me at
One last thought for
consideration: There are just 12
men residing at Cactus Gardens
right now. The
property is
zoned for 50
residents.
Edmund the
lead counselor
told me that
more residents
are on the way
and he expects
to be at
capacity in the
not too distant
future. Their
needs will multiply.

Update on Spring
Local/Global Mission Opportunity
The Mission Committee would like to say THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your generosity in donating items to our recent local/global project of providing needed items to both persecuted Christians in Pakistan and residents of the Cactus Garden Halfway Home in Garden Grove. We are pleased to announce that we have shipped 12 very full bags to the Voice of the Martyrs organization for distribution and also delivered many items to Cactus Gardens. Please read Dick Aced‟s report on his visit to deliver the donations to Cactus Gardens and his offer to collect and deliver additional needed items. If you have donations or questions you may contact him at [email protected]. Please remember to pray for these families in Pakistan who will be receiving these bags and the residents of Cactus Gardens and know that your compassion and generosity will make a difference in their lives. Also, watch for more opportunities to be involved
with these two ministries of TPC!

How long have you attended TPC? We joined TPC in 2004. I did not go to church growing up. But I felt a strong presence and protection of God and really wanted to belong to a church family. Trabuco Presbyterian Church was the first church that we came to. I saw a beautiful building and a steeple. I knew from the website that there was Sunday School for my little ones and that there was a choir. Joining TPC has been a wonderful welcoming experience for us and our children. We have met great people who have been true disciples and great
teachers.
Favorite scripture?
My favorite scripture is Psalm 46 “Be still and know that I am God”. I find it to be a very simple and
powerful prayer.
What is the most enjoyable
activity/event for you at TPC?
That is very difficult to choose (choir, leading worship with the awesome praise band musicians, Suppers at Six) but I also love VBS. I make time each year to participate with the program. I truly enjoy sharing my love of music and God‟s word with the VBS kids. Similarly, I love the Drive Thru Nativity. It was thrilling seeing the community lining up to
experience the miracle of Christmas.
What are you enjoying the most about being an elder? I am seeing how the Lord gives me opportunities to use my gifts in different and creative ways. I have joined Facebook as part of my new role, launching me into the technology of the 21st century as one of my
“friends” told me.
Communications Elder is a new Elder position at TPC. How would you describe your new role as
Communications Elder at TPC?
My role as Communications Elder is to help further the mission of the church and invite all people to build a relationship with Jesus Christ. This ministry includes the church website, social media i.e. Facebook, and
press releases. It involves strategies to promote our worship services, ministries and other programs so as to reach out to others in the community and create a presence. I work with a team of talented individuals who produce innovative, creative content and we set standards for the newsletters,
bulletins, and signage.
Where can we look for TPC in the media and upcoming events? There have been 3 press releases so far in the Orange County Register, ocregister.com and the RSM PATCH featuring our church and our ministries. It has been exciting seeing pictures of our youth and leaders featured in the media. I hope to have an article in the paper regularly to continue to give TPC a presence in the community. I submit the stories to the editor and the editor fits them in. I regularly post updates and events on TPC‟s Facebook page. Our church events are also posted to the community calendar on RSM Patch and OC Register so others can view
our events as well.
Something exciting that is coming up is RanchoFest, RSM‟s community expo, June 8 & 9th in Central Park. TPC will have a booth there so mark your calendars! It should be a really fun and creative way for us to participate in the community and reach out to those who may be searching for a church home. Over 1,000 people attend every year. If you are interested in volunteering in the booth, let me know. I would like to see our church continue to participate
in community events such as these.
It is a true privilege for me to serve as your elder. Trabuco Presbyterian Church has provided me and my family with so much over the years. I am honored to be part of furthering
the vision of our church.
~ Jessica Holtorf
Communications Elder Spotlight—Jessica Holtorf Tell us about your childhood: I grew up in El Cajon, CA which is in east San Diego. I was raised by a single mom
and I have 2 half-brothers, Brandon, who is 28 and Nick, 18. I loved school, and really enjoyed choir. When I was 14, I won a scholarship to study voice at San Diego State. I moved up to Orange County in 1993 soon after I graduated high school
and set roots here.
Tell us about your family: Michael and I have been married for 17 years (22 years total☺). We have 2 children, Genevieve who is almost 13. She really loves reading, volleyball, Assisteens, Girl Scouts and going to Vision. Our son, Gregory, 10 years old, also loves reading but loves playing Pop Warner football, going to Trailblazers, and playing with his friends. We also have a yellow Labrador, Sawyer, who is a year old who still likes to chew things up and dig up new vegetable plants
in our garden.
I am also a registered nurse. I am a charge nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at CHOC Children‟s Hospital of Orange County where I have worked for 15 years. I am very active in my profession, the organization and the professional development of my peers. Each day provides me an opportunity to make a profound difference, whether it is for the patient, the parent, or a colleague. Nursing is an excellent career with many possibilities and paths and brings with it much
personal fulfillment.
What are your hobbies?
I love to go to concerts and hear all kinds of music and I love to sing. I love to watch my kids at their various activities cheering for them. I also like wine tasting, cooking and spending
time with my husband. Page 10
