Pet Portable Disaster Kit

Sample List for Pets

medications and medical records

first aid kit

flea/tick powder/spray

leashes, harnesses, collars, carriers

food - enough for several days, as well as canned food (canned food contains water, which will enable the pet to drink less water, which may be at a premium)

can opener

water

bowls

cat litter and pan

pet beds and toys (if easily transportable)

*If you can't take your pet with you (evacuation situations), find a safe place to keep them, give the caregivers information on feeding (amounts and schedule), medical needs, behavior issues, and the vet's name and contact info and the area's

emergency clinic info. Don't forget to give them your contact information (where you are staying, phone number, cell

numbers) Think about giving the caregivers a letter giving them permission to care for your pets.

Making Your DP Plan Talk about where you will meet your

family/household members if a disaster happens.

Talk about how to prepare and respond to different kinds of emergencies that could happen in your area (where your family works, learns and plays)

Figure out what each family member can do if a disaster happens and work together as a team.

If someone in your family is in the military, plan what to do if they are called to duty or deployed.

If you are separated:

Choose someone out of your area as an emergency contact. Make sure everyone has updated information programmed into their cell phones or address book

Choose two places to meet each other

one right outside your home in case of emergencies like a fire.

and one outside of your neighborhood just in case you can't go back home or are evacuated (somewhere in between work, school and play areas)

Page 8: Ready, Set, Prepared! In my presentation I will show you how to prepare for disasters by doing three things: Build Your Disaster Preparedness Kit Make.

Making Your DP Plan, Evacuation

Don't panic, take a deep breath and try not to worry.

Make a Decision where you would go and what route to get there. You can decide to go to a Hotel/Motel to stay with friends/relatives in a safe place or go to evacuation shelter if needed.

Know how to evacuate your home twice a year. Drive your plan to evacuate route and come up with back-up routes on on your map n case the roads are not possible.

Come up with a plan for your pets. Make a phone list of pet friendly Hotels/Motels and animal shelters along your evacuation routes.

*A good idea is to get Emergency Contact Cards for All Household Members. Get your cards online at http://www.redcross.org/prepare/ECCard.pdf (Carry the card with you so it is available in the event of a disaster or other emergency)

Get Informed What kind of disasters or emergencies happen in

the area you live in?. These can range from things that could affect just your family to things that affect an entire surrounding community. From a house fire to a flood.

Find out how your community is notified during such disasters and how you can get important information (local radio, TV, NOAA, Weather Radio Stations)

Find out what the difference is between weather alerts like watches and warnings. Then find out what action to take accordingly.

Find out what you might need to do to protect your family when and if these disasters happen in your area. Find out what disasters your area is prone to.

Make sure at least one member of your family has CPR/First Aid training or you have instructions for first aid/cpr(book, diagram etc)

Share the information you find with your family, friends and neighbors so if a disaster happens you will all know what to do instead of panicking.
