• Background• Adoption of CCSS• California joined the

Smarter Balanced consortia

• Assessment for CCSS was developed by Smarter Balanced

• CDE adopted the Smarter Assessment

Page 4: Ready for College?

• Background (Cont.)• New test system

incorporates the Smarter assessments

• CDE phased out CSTs and the STAR system

• New adopted test system: California Assessment for Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP )

• Spring 2015 implementation

Page 5: Ready for College?

• Background (Cont.)• EAP was part of the

CSTs• EAP was the model used

nationally for the new assessment

• EAP will continue to exist under the new CAASPP system

• EAP is now incorporated into the new CAASPP

Page 6: Ready for College?

Operationalizing the new EAP• Spring 2015 Implementation of CAASPP• CAASPP will assess students in English and

mathematics.• Grade eleven students will participate in CAASPP

exams • CAASPP will provide an early assessment of

college content readiness by the end of the junior year

• The CSU will use the CAASPP college readiness assessment as the new EAP result in English and math

Page 7: Ready for College?

Operationalizing EAP (Cont.)• CSU EAP structure will remain the same• CSU will continue to:• Keep the name of EAP (Early Assessment

Program)• Encourage students to use the 12th grade year

proactively• provide professional development in ERWC and

mathematics• provide outreach and information to schools via

the EAP coordinators

Page 8: Ready for College?

Operationalizing Differences• Smarter Balanced uses Achievement Level

Descriptors (ALDs)• CDE will use the term Performance Levels• Performance Levels are the new EAP statuses• Statuses will remain the same• Ready• Conditional Ready • Not yet demonstrating readiness

• Results within 4-6 weeks of taking the CAASPP• No longer voluntary – release still necessary

Page 9: Ready for College?

Performance Levels (EAP)• Performance Level 4• Ready for English and/or Mathematics college-

level coursework• Performance Level 3• Conditionally Ready for English and/or

Mathematics college-level coursework• Performance Level 2 & 1• Not demonstrating readiness for English and

Performance Levels (EAP)• Performance Level 3 (Conditional)• Student is exempt from taking CSU’s English

and/or math placement exams• Student must participate in CSU’s Early Start

Additional Pathway• CSU anticipates fewer students demonstrating

readiness due to the change in the structure of the assessment.• This may increase the number of students

needing remediation and to take placement tests.• CSU wants to ensure all students receive a fair

assessment of their college readiness status.

Page 20: Ready for College?

Additional Pathway• CSU will use SAT/ACT results to indicate a

conditional college-ready status in English and mathematics.• Encourage students to take SAT/ACT in the

junior year• This allows for students to be placed in

appropriate senior year English and/or mathematics courses.
