    Introduction

    Bentley Utilities Designer is a desktop application that fulfills the core requirements to model, document, and manage as-built infrastructure asset information for electric, gas, water, and wastewater utilities and to design and cost estimate plans for infrastructure extension, renewal, and maintenance activities. The core foundation builds on MicroStation CAD technology and Bentley Map 2D and 3D Spatial technology to address the unique and challenging needs of organizations that map, plan, design, build, and operate the world´s infrastructures. To meet the challenge, Bentley Utilities Designer provides three distinct installable modules: Workflow Manager, Design Editor, and Job Processor.

    Workflow Manager

    The Workflow Manager is an installable component of Bentley Utilities Designer that secures data access, streamlines Job and task management from current user to the next user, and increases collaboration and access to information. It accomplishes this through Group Roles assigned to users, the management of job status and states, and User Role based portals that include user tasks and metrics. The system can also be easily integrated with work and asset management systems and with ProjectWise.

    Design Editor

    The Design Editor provides the core GIS, Design, Visualization, and Editing environment to create, manage, analyze, and report on as-built utility infrastructure asset information, and to create, manage, analyze, cost estimate, and report on design plans for utility asset infrastructures. The tools in Design Editor can be categorized into two distinct groups: the Map tools and the Design Assistant. The Map tools provide the primary graphical view of the data. A variety of tools are provided to model, document, analyze, and report on the infrastructures as well as advanced GIS 2D and 3D data manipulation and analysis tools and print preparation tools. The Design Assistant tools are available in edit sessions where design plans are created and manipulated. The design tools provide the capability to assign compatible units to work locations in designs for infrastructure extension plans, maintenance plans, and renewal plans. The assignment of a compatible unit associates units of material, labor type, and cost for generation of cost estimates, Bills of Material, cost comparison purposes, and so forth. This information becomes immediately reportable. The design tools can be integrated with work and asset management systems.

    Job Processor

    The Job Processor is an installable component of Bentley Utilities Designer that executes and monitors job processing tasks as batch operations. Data is relayed to and from other systems while the Job Processor runs invisibly in the background. Jobs are processed according to job types, which are configured as a set of scheduling, priority, and failure notification preferences. Authorized users can view current job activity as well as information about logged events. By performing routine or time-consuming tasks with little user intervention, the Job Processor expedites production and data maintenance processes. Users can perform their work without interruptions and delays and without competing for system resources.

    Based on MicroStation technology.

    MicroStation is the most powerful mapping and design environment available today. Bentley Utilities Designer is based on MicroStation technology and takes advantage of its powerful capture, editing, display, and output capabilities. Companies around the world have been using MicroStation for over twenty years to produce high quality mapping. Bentley Utilities Designer capitalizes on this experience and adds geospatial modeling, network modeling, and interoperability tools while preserving MicroStation performance and operation.

    Built-in Bentley Map technology

    Bentley Map is a family of applications that form the foundation of the Bentley geospatial desktop and server products. It is a full-featured 3D GIS designed to address the unique and challenging needs of organizations that map, plan, design, build, and operate the world´s infrastructure. Bentley Map has tools for creating, persisting, maintaining, analyzing and sharing all your 2D and 3D geospatial information. Bentley Utilities Designer includes and builds on Bentley Map technology to allow users to easily integrate data from a wide variety of sources into engineering and mapping workflows. Multiple data types with varying coordinate systems are transformed "on-the-fly" as they are added to a session. Powerful analytical and presentation tools allow for detailed analysis, studies and decision support. Enhanced Print Preparation tool, labeling and annotation, join tables and comprehensive query and data browsing tools are included. Bentley Utilities Designer integration with Oracle Spatial is one of the strongest in its class and uses only standard Oracle data types and processes. An API is available to develop custom applications. Please refer to the corresponding Bentley Map release notes, read me documentation, and “Key Features” section for additional information.

    Utility Industry Data Models

    Bentley Utilities Designer includes data models for electric, gas, water, and wastewater. The data models define asset infrastructure objects, attributes, network connectivity, and relationships for each discipline to meet requirements for design and operations. In addition, the data models include operations records to aid in the management of inspections, maintenance, and incident activities.

    Rules based Bentley Utilities Designer supports business rules, layout rules, and Compatible Unit Rules. Business Rules calculate connectivity and set relationships as a byproduct of the drafting process. Layout Rules, ensure maps and the GIS adhere to company drafting standards.

    Comprehensive Edit and Design Environment

    Bentley Utilities Designer merges CAD, GIS, and Work Management into one streamlined environment to manage asset as-built information and design plans for extensions, renewals, and maintenance activities.

    Integrated Work Management

    The Workflow Manager manages work requests and designs in either a stand-alone mode or with seamless integration to external work management system (WMS). Bentley Utilities Designer supports the most widely used WMS products on the market today.

    Workflow Manager Bentley Utilities Designer Workflow Manager allows users to view and manage job status and states by tracking the timelines of each project and shows you which ones need your attention. At a glance, you can see which work requests are pending and which are overdue as well as which designs are still in progress.

    Modeling and Documentation Tools

    Bentley Utilities Designer layout tools allow users to model and document electric, gas, water, and wastewater infrastructure assets. Similarly, operations records for inspections, maintenance, and incidents can be associated to these assets. Bentley Utilities Designer Conduit Manager Tools allow users to accurately model and document electric underground conduit structures, structure walls, ducts, devices, cables, and conduit run cross sections with precise detail. The system manages relationships and connectivity and provides a place by trace result command to make the layout process a snap.

    Network Trace Analysis Bentley Utilities Designer Trace Analysis tools retain trace results until the user clears them. This allows the user to visualize cumulative trace results individually or as a composite presentation. Trace types supported include Find Multiple Paths along a conduit run, Find Spatially Redundant Paths, Find Connected Paths, Find Upstream Paths, Find Downstream Paths, and Find Shortest Path. These results can be refined with queries, or with barriers placed interactively.

    Leak Analysis The leak analysis tools enable a user to capture pipe leak and break data in gas and water networks and perform analyses to identify problem areas which can feed into replacement and maintenance decisions.

    Design Assistant The Bentley Utilities Designer Design Assistant provides a comprehensive design interface to manage design information and cost estimation information including point and span information, compatible unit information, generating bills of materials, and so forth.

    On-the-fly Cost Estimates

    Bentley Utilities Designer provides real-time cost estimates for a design as you create it. It continuously calculates and displays the

    estimated cost of all labor, materials, and equipment at each work location and for the entire design.

    Wastewater survey import

    Bentley Utilities Designer is preconfigured to import manhole and pipe survey data that includes condition scores, images, and CCTV observations. Pipe scores are calculated as a result of the import process.

    Interoperability with Analysis

    Bentley Utilities Designer can create Bentley WaterGEMS and Bentley SewerGEMS models in their native format. These models can be maintained by periodically synchronizing them with the GIS without the need to re-create the entire model. Additionally, design scenarios can be created directly in the models by Bentley Utilities Designer to analyze design plans or optimize designs.

    "Interoperability" tools and user workflows.

    Bentley Utilities Designer includes new tools to improve interoperability with other GIS formats. Directly reference ESRI® SHP files, MapInfo® TAB files, and others, or export your data into these formats for sharing with other groups on your project team. The interoperability tools include a unique interface for defining import and export processes. Easily import single files or entire folders of data. The data is automatically projected into the coordinate system defined for your current map. Your project and mapping data can also be exported into these formats using the same tool with full support of attribute data and projection. For users requiring more advanced interoperability capabilities, the Bentley Map FME Extension is provided that makes available many additional geospatial data formats and supports additional data conversion workflows. In addition, Bentley Utilities Designer Live Data Exchange provides a custom plug-in architecture that allows integration to almost any spatial data source including GE Smallworld.

    "Oracle Spatial" direct editing interface.

    Oracle Spatial is fast becoming the standard method for organizations to store and manage very large volumes of spatial data. Bentley Utilities Designer can edit data directly in any standard Oracle Spatial environment employing a feature locking mechanism for multi-user environments. Organizations can also take advantage of Oracle versioning to manage conflicts in an “extract, edit, and post to Oracle Spatial” workflow enabled by the Bentley Geospatial Server. It's straightforward for Bentley Utilities Designer to maintain the topological relationships that may have been defined and stored in the Oracle Spatial database because Bentley Utilities Designer uses the native Oracle Spatial topology model. Please refer to the "Oracle Spatial" section for more information.

    Microsoft SQL Server spatial geometry direct editing interface.

    Beginning with the Bentley Utilities Designer V8i (SELECTseries 3) release, users can edit data directly spatial geometries being persisted in a Microsoft SQL Server graphical source.

    Bentley Map FME Extension

    Bentley Utilities Designer has tools to import and export several different formats of geospatial data. For users that require access to other data formats not directly supported by Bentley Utilities Designer, the Bentley Map FME Extension is designed to make many additional geospatial data formats accessible to improve user workflows.

    What is FME?

    FME (the “Feature Manipulation Engine”) is a complete data access solution for reading, writing and transforming spatial data. It is produced by Safe Software (www.safe.com). In general FME is used to translate geographic data to and from a variety of different formats including those listed on the "FME Desktop Supported Formats" online resource. The FME Desktop product contains additional useful tools such as the following:

    The FME Universal Viewer is a handy tool to view geospatial data of many formats in a quick way.

    The FME Workbench is a graphical authoring environment that makes it easy to graphically specify data transformations.

    Please note that prior to using the Bentley Map FME Extension functionalities, you must install and license the required version of the FME Desktop product. Please refer to the "Technical Requirements" section for additional information.

    Known Issues

    This section contains information about known issues in this Bentley Map FME Extension release. Please report any other issues found while using this software. It is not necessary to report the following known issues:

    Issue Details Formats

    Limitations with import of data that contains solid geometries.

    During import operations, solids will be converted to multi-surfaces because Bentley Utilities Designer does not currently support solids. The immediate drawback is the loss of the solid semantic and inability to export back to solids.

    IFC

    Text is not supported.

    Text geometry currently cannot be imported or exported as the XfmStorage doesn't support that yet. The FME Extension will ignore instances with text geometries and log a warning.

    MicroStation GeoGraphics

    Issues with string lengths being too long in XFM.

    XFM appears to have some length limitations for string properties. However that limitation is not enforced when setting the string, but rather when retrieving the property on querying the instance, e.g. in Data Browser or on export. It appears that the issue is not there after FME Extension is restarted after the import.

    KML, CityGML, LandXML

    Structs are flattened during import operations.

    During import operations, structs are flattened out as properties, so a struct named 'Address', containing the properties 'Street' and 'Housenumber' will be incorporated as properties with the names 'Address.Street' and 'Address.Housenumber' respectively.

    FOT GML

    Struct Arrays are not imported.

    FME Extension does not currently support modeling of structs and struct arrays.

    Structs are not exported.

    Any struct or struct array that an instance may contain will be stripped from the instance on export. A warning will be logged to inform the user that information has been lost on export. FME Extension does not currently support modeling of structs and struct arrays. Because structs are flattened at import, struct data still gets written at export if the feature definition is left unchanged.

    FOT GML

    No support for multiple geometry properties.

    In very rare cases the user may want to import data where for a given instance multiple geometry properties exist (e.g. in CityGML a single WallSurface instance may have a geometry for LOD2 and one for LOD3). Since FME Extension does not currently support multiple geometries, only the first geometry property will be considered. Other geometry properties will be skipped and a warning will be logged.

    Relationships are imported as foreign keys if the FME reader supports that.

    There is no conversion that creates XFM sub features for relations. FME Extension does not currently support that from a functionality point of view.

    CityGML

    No texture support.

    No texture support is provided at this time. CityGML

    No coordinate transformation on export.

    During export, geometries will not be reprojected, so the exported geometries will be in the same projection as they were in FME Extension. However the coordinate system information is being exported. So the exported data knows the coordinate system it is in if the following conditions exist:

    A valid coordinate system was assigned to the active design file in the FME Extension session.

    The user selected a target coordinate system in the FME connection dialog.

    All

    Issues with exported spatial reference information.

    For certain projections the resulting output in FME doesn't contain proper SRS information (e.g. Dutch RD projection). Example output: ...

    GML, SHP

    Incorrect schema generated by FOT GML export.

    Since it isn't possible to set a schema file (XSD) in the FME dialog when exporting a file to GML, FME will always create its own schema file. This also means that the exported data might not validate with the official schema. The only way to ensure a proper export is by verifying that the feature structure (including structs + struct arrays) at export matches the official schema definition exactly.

    One thing beyond our control is that FME also generates two geometry properties. One is a single geometry property, and the other is its multigeometry variant. For example:

    The installer complains that the ecom.config file is installed by another Bentley application.

    Workaround if the installer complains that the ecom.config file is installed by another Bentley application:

    Back-up the existing ecom.config and remove it from the specified directory and run the installer again. Note: Removing the existing ecom.config may break the applications that installed that config file

    Non-planar polygons are ignored.

    Some data files contain polygons which are non-planar. Technically they are invalid, and the associative regions don't match them well because of this. But neither FME nor Bentley Utilities Designer throws an exception, writes a log message, or does anything else because of it.

    Import of certain IFC features cause a property type mismatch error.

    In some cases FME provides additionally redundant properties (e.g. the same property will be delivered as string with comma separated values and as array). This leads to a property type mismatch error. The redundant property will be discarded.

    3D Data

    Holes in vertical surfaces aren't always detected properly on export.

    Many 3D data, especially CityGML data, has vertically oriented features, like walls. Often they contain holes, like windows. In special circumstances (close parallel surfaces) holes don't get exported properly. Generally the distance between two walls is large enough to work properly, but the distance between the two sides of a window is often too small.

    Swapping two properties in schemamapping does not work.

    Example: given a class with the properties "name" and "description," the user chooses to assign the name property to description, and the description property to name. The exchange will complete with warnings. The log will list argumentExceptions, because the reclassifier cannot handle this.

    Exporting ESRI File Based Geodatabase files.

    When creating a new ESRI File Based Geodatabase during export, an ESRI ArcView license level will not work. You must have a license of ESRI ArcEditor or ESRI ArcInfo. In the FME Extension when exporting to ESRI formats, ArcGIS must be installed on the same machine as Bentley Utilities Designer and the FME Desktop software. ArcGIS and FME Desktop must be both licensed. When creating a new ESRI File Based Geodatabase, you must have a license of ArcEditor or upper, an ArcView license level will not work. Workaround: Creating the File Based Geodatabase in ArcCatalog and using it in the FME Extension should provide the ability to export.

    ESRI File Based Geodatabase (GDB)

    Exporting LandXML files.

    While attempting to export data to LandXML file format, an "Exchange failed" error message occurs indicating "FME Error(s): There was a problem writing out the 'Alignments' and 'Alignment' elements. The problem was: 'Item id must be globally unique'. LandXML requires that 'Name' attributes are globally unique. If features have non-unique values for the 'Name' attribute, the attribute will need to be renamed." At this time exporting of the LandXML file format is not supported.

    Importing existing CityGML files.

    A schema mapping problem occurs for the AuxiliaryTrafficArea feature which causes FME Desktop 2010 to provide the property “citygml_function” with an incorrect property type. This issue should be fixed in a future FME Desktop release but for now we recommend to uncheck this property when importing AuxiliaryTrafficArea features when using the FME Desktop 2010 product.

    In CityGML xlink:href references are ignored.

In general that switch is intended for applications that are memory-intensive, such as database management systems (DBMS). The use of a larger virtual address space can provide considerable performance and scalability benefits. However, the file cache, paged pool, and nonpaged pool are smaller, which can adversely affect applications with heavy networking or I/O. Therefore, you might want to test your application under load, and examine the performance counters to determine whether your application benefits from the larger address space. Windows XP Setup Instructions In boot.ini use /3GB switch:

    Criteria

    The feature table must have a primary key constraint consisting of a single numeric or string/character column which will represent the id of the feature. This primary key is required to enable versioning using the standard versioning system of the Oracle Workspace Manager.

    The table must have a geometric (SDO_GEOMETRY) column specifying the feature geometry, and this geometry column must be registered in the Oracle Spatial metadata table (ALL_SDO_GEOM_METADATA or the related USER_SDO_GEOM_METADATA view for the user).

    The table fields must be of common type (i.e.: no user defined type).

    The geometry must be all of a similar type (all of the geometries must be a point, line or polygon type, not a mixture of these types). To determine if a table contains more than one geometry type:

    The Prerequisites for Bentley Desktop Applications needs to be installed on your system once, and only needs to be reinstalled if you are installing a later version of Bentley Utilities Designer that requires an updated prerequisite pack.

    The Prerequisites for Bentley Desktop Applications is available from the Web Downloads / MySELECT CD area of SELECTservices Online and includes the following components:

    The minimum recommended workstation profile for installing and running Bentley Utilities Designer is:

    Processor Intel© or AMD© processor 3.0 GHz or greater.

    Memory 2 GB minimum, 4 GB or more recommended.

    Additional memory will almost always improve performance, particularly when working with larger data sets.

    Hard Disk 2 GB free disk space minimum

    This includes space for temporary installation files, product setup packages, required prerequisite pack installation, ~850 MB footprint for Bentley Utilities Designer V8i (SELECTseries 3), and ~300 MB in user data (configuration files, data files, examples, etc.)

    Video Graphics card supported by DirectX 9.0c

    See the graphics card manufacturer for latest information on DirectX drivers. 256 MB of video RAM or higher is recommended. If insufficient video RAM or no graphics card supported by DirectX can be found, MicroStation attempts to use software emulation. For optimal performance, graphics display color depth should be set to 24-bit or higher. When using a color depth setting of 16-bit, some inconsistencies will be noted.

    Database Requirements

    Bentley Utilities Designer V8i (SELECTseries 3) can be implemented using number of different persistence models, including models that leverage Oracle and SQL Server databases.

    Oracle

    When implementing Bentley Utilities Designer V8i (SELECTseries 3) with DGN/Oracle or Oracle Spatial persistence, the minimum requirements are:

    Server Oracle Database 11g Release 2 Standard Edition, Standard Edition One, Enterprise Edition

    Network Requirements

    For DGN/Oracle, Oracle Spatial, DGN/SQL Server, and SQL Server Spatial persistence, Bentley Utilities Designer V8i (SELECTseries 3) will typically be configured in a LAN or comparable setup, leveraging file and database servers, accessed by one or more Bentley Utilities Designer clients.

    Minimum network requirements are:

    Bandwidth 500 Mbit/s minimum, 1 Gbit/s or higher recommended

    In networking, bandwidth represents the overall capacity of the connection. The greater the capacity, the more likely that better performance will result. Note that the numbers given here reflect actual, not theoretical throughput.

    Latency < 5 ms minimum, < 1 ms recommended

    Besides Bandwidth, latency is a factor that has a major impact on network speed. The term latency refers to any of several kinds of delays typically incurred in processing of network data. A low latency network improves performance.

    Quick Installation

    The following guidelines should be reviewed prior to Bentley Utilities Designer product installation:

    1. When installing or uninstalling Bentley Utilities Designer V8i (SELECTseries 3), you must be logged on with Administrator rights.

    2. Installation of Bentley Utilities Designer V8i (SELECTseries 3) on Windows 2000 is not supported. For more information on supported operating systems, see the "Technical Requirements" section.

    3. Bentley Utilities Designer V8i (SELECTseries 3) requires software libraries (DLLs) that are delivered with Microsoft's Internet Explorer version 6.0 (or greater). Because of this, make sure Internet Explorer 6.0 (or later) is installed on your computer before you install the Bentley Utilities Designer V8i (SELECTseries 3) release. You do not need to change your default Web browser if it is currently something other than Internet Explorer. Refer to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.htm for more information regarding Internet Explore.

    4. It is highly recommended that you close any programs and disable any antivirus software that is running prior to the installation of this software. Be sure to turn on your antivirus software once product installation has been completed.

    If you have not created a database instance, please refer to the instructions, “To create an Oracle database instance for the Workflow Manager”.

    1. Find the Database folder located in the extracted installation folder, typically “C:\ BentleyDownloads\ UtilitiesDesigner_08.11.09.xx\Database”.

    2. Copy the Oracle dump file BUDV8i.dmp from the “Database\ BUDRefDBDump” sub folder to the “Database\LoadFromDump\New” sub folder.

    3. Enter the sub folder “Database\LoadFromDump\New”. 4. Open the new_db.bat file for editing. 5. Change the password and instance name for the "sys" user of the database (6 entries). For

    example, replace “sys/chadmin@ ED01” with your “sys/password@net_service_name”. 6. Change the name of the dump file to BUDV8i.dmp. 7. Edit the tablespace.sql file and change the paths to the correct location for tablespaces to

    be created in your database instance. 8. Edit the new_edusers.sql file and add the required users who will use Bentley Utilities

    Designer. Bentley Utilities Designer uses OS Authentication to connect to Oracle. User names must be the same as Windows login names.

    9. Run the batch file new_db.bat. 10. Review the log file DB_IMPORT.log for errors. Table drop error can typically be ignored. 11. Log into SQLPLUS as sys user and execute ( = one of the users added in Step 8):

    update chdata.userlogin set username='', firstname='Firstname', lastname='Lastname' where username='administrator'; commit;

    Note: This step is to facilitate an initial user who would further configure other users. Other

    Test the database with OS Authentication from the command prompt by executing the statement “sqlplus /@net_service_name”. If this fails, please refer to Oracle documentation to set up OS Authentication correctly.

    To use the sample Microsoft SQL Server spatial schema

    Attach the sample spatial database provided, following the same steps described in “To attach the sample database to SQL Server for the Workflow manager”.

    1. Open the file BUD_SSS2T-PostRegFtrs.xml using Bentley Geospatial Administrator. This file can be found in the Bentley Utilities Designer install location, in the subfolder "\datamodel\BentleyUD\".

    2. In the Schema tab, navigate to Graphical Sources|SQL Server Spatial Connection|Named Connection.

    3. Change the Host value to match the machine hosting your database. 4. Export the schema. 5. Run the batch file CopySS
