Alonso III de Fonseca (1418 - 1473) was archbishop of Santiago de Compostela from 1507, and archbishop of Toledo from 1523. He was a major supporter of the University of Santiago de Compostela

Fonseca was an extremely erudite man, a Renaissance man and patron of numerous artists of the time, who was in touch with important thinkers such as Erasmus of Rotterdam

Compostela is the reputed burial place of Saint James the Great, one of the apostles of Jesus

Christ

This is the Holy entrance to the Cathedral (the “Puerta Santa”) which dates from the beginning of the 17th century.  The door is only opened on Holy Years and is exceptionally opened by order of the Pope Francis in 2016 in honour of the Jubilee Year of Mercy

On the bottom and sides of the door were placed twenty-four figures of prophets and apostles (including St. James) coming from the old stone choir of Master Mateo
