NIDARA TIPSALL THINGS CHILDREN
Many parents think of LKG or UKG as "the reading time," and it's not a surprise: from the beginning of the first LKG year of school to the last, children go from recognizing alphabets to becoming beginning readers ready to handle the challenges of primary school. A lot happens over these years of schooling, so here's a simple guide to help you know where your child should be in terms of reading skills by the time they have completed LKG or UKG.While every school teacher and school has their own set of “prerequisites,” there's a set of standard list of reading expectations that most child development specialists and teachers share when it comes to children entering LKG or UKG.

For example, before beginning to read, children need to have a sound foundation in "concepts about print.” That means that children spend a lot of time in the beginning of the year absorbing details about how reading works, such as the fact the reading happens left to right, top to bottom.
They will also spend lots of time going over alphabet-sound matching, vowel sounds, sight words, and a whole lot of other skills that form the foundation for beginning reading literacy.
WHILE ALL SCHOOLS ARE DIFFERENT, IN THE FOLLOWING MONTHS MOST TEACHERS WILL
WORK ON A SIMILAR SET OF READING SKILLS.
NIDARA TIPSALL THINGS CHILDREN
While schools differ, a child working at the standard level should be able to do the following by the end of kindergarten in order to be prepared for first grade reading:
• Recognize all letters of the alphabet in, their lowercase and capital form and combination• Be able to make the correct sound for alphabets• Read 30 high frequency words (sight words)• Read grade-level appropriate books• Create and recognize rhyming words• Use phonetic skills to read new words• Have a strong understanding of print concepts• Use language structure to read new words• Display comprehension of what they have read
So where do children end up by the time the end of kindergarten rolls
around?
