Check out a book, read the book, complete one of the activities, fill out the Google Form and meet with Mrs. Yager or your teacher to discuss it. Every 5 books, receive a prize. Once you have read 10 books, you will get your name on the Sullivan Note-able Readers Wall in the library. Special recognition will be given to students who read all the genres.

Animals -nonfiction
There are 25 genre. You may read as many in any type of genre you like, but this will guide you to the many different types of books available to read.
Historical Fiction- Historical Fiction- Historical Fiction- Animals - Fiction Revolutionary War Civil War Pioneers
Immigration American Stew – America is a land that has been settled by people from all over the world. With this genre, you will discover some of the ways various ethnic groups came to America. You will learn about the way of life they brought with them and the difficulties they encountered after they arrived. Choose a book whose main character is an immigrant. Complete one of the following activities:
1. Is there a typical American? Write five adjectives that you would use to describe an American.
2. Take a survey of students in your class. Ask them where their ancestors came from. List all the countries named and the number of persons who named each country.
3. Make a Venn Diagram comparing the US to the country of the
main character from your book.

Family All In A Family – The family is the basic unit of society. It is the first world you entered when you were born. In reading stories on Family Life, you will have a chance to identify yourself with characters that may have problems similar to yours, and you will gain insight into the way they faced their problems. Choose a fiction book that is about characters in a family. Most realistic fictions books will fall into this category. Complete one of the following activities:
1. Name on of the feelings that the main character experienced in the book. How would you behave if you were in their place?
2. Write a short paragraph about a conflict you experienced with your brothers, sisters, or friends. Explain the conflict and how it was resolved.
3. Make a picture illustrating the feelings that were part of the conflict in the story,

Caldecott An Award – The Caldecott Medal is awarded to the illustrator/artist of the most distinguished American Picture Book for Children published in the United States during the preceding year. The first award was given in 1938. Go on the internet or card catalog and choose a book from the list of Caldecott winners. Complete one of the following activities:
1. Look at the picture of the medal in the library, Name at least 3 of the characters that are part of the picture. 2. Choose one illustration from the book, share it with your
class and discuss how it makes you feel.
3. Find another book by the same illustrator. Is the style the same? How does the style make you feel?

Women in History
Women in History – Women have gone down in history for a wide variety
of strengths and accomplishments, and they are still making history. Choose a book to learn the accomplishments of a least one woman and the hardships she had to overcome. Complete one of the following activities:
1. Pretend you are the editor of a magazine and you want to prepare a feature of a famous woman from today. Write who you would pick and 3 questions you would ask her.
2. Write 3 questions that were left unanswered when you finished
your book. What details would you still like to know about her?
3. Create an award for the famous woman you read about.

Poetry
Poking into Poetry – Have you ever just listened to words? They really can do marvelous things! Poetry comes in all forms. It’s a way to express whatever you feel. Choose a poetry book to become familiar with different types of poetry. Complete one of the following activities:
1, Choose a poem, practice reading it and then read it aloud to your class. 2. Choose a common every day object. Write a poem about it using descriptive words. Try to look at this common object in a new way! 3. What kind of poem did you read? Is it rhyming, humorous, haiku, shaped, etc.?

Historical Fiction – Pioneers Pioneering – From 1760 to 1850, the settlers moved westward in two big migrations. The first pushed the frontier to the Mississippi Valley. The frontier reached California and Oregon during the second migration. Also, there are tales of frontiersmen who went to Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush. Choose a book about pioneers to discover the reasons they moved to new frontiers. You will learn about the dangers and hardships they faced and the skills they needed to survive. Complete one of the following activities:
1, Draw a picture of one of the forms of transportation that the pioneers used. 2. Make a Venn Diagram comparing one of the chores that the pioneers had to do to something you do at home. 3. Label the journey of the pioneer on the map of the United States printed on the back of this paper.

Historical Fiction
Back in Time – Stories based on events in history, but did not actually happen. Choose a book from a time period that you are interested in. Complete one of the following activities:
1, What was the main event that this story was based on? 2. List 3 parts of the story that did happen in history and 3 parts of the story that were made up by the author. 3. Why would you have wanted to/not wanted to live during this time period?

Folktales
Folktales – Stories that were first told orally and then written down. They can be legends, fables, Tall Tales or trickster tales. Choose a folktale. You will see how they tend to explain something or teach a lesson. Complete one of the following activities: 1, If you read a Tall Tale, explain 3 exaggerations from the book.
2. Practice reading your folktale and read it to your class or a class at Ross.
3. Read a different version of the folktale you read and make a Venn Diagram comparing them. (You can get credit for reading 2 books!)

Mystery
Mystery and Detective Stories – Stories about mysteries and
their solutions are among the most popular types of fiction.
Choose a mystery book, uncover the clues and solve the mystery. Complete one of the following activities:
1, What characteristics does the main character have that enables him/her to solve the mystery. 2. Make a list of the clues that were used in the book to solve the mystery you read. 3. Draw a comic strip based on the mystery you read. 4. Take a quiz on ReadnQuiz.

Science Fiction
Weird and Wonderful – Science fiction stories take you far away on an imaginative journey. See how the author relates the real world to the unreal world. Choose a science fiction book and as you read try to see what things the author does to create special excitement. Complete one of the following activities:
1, Draw a picture of one of the characters from the story you read.
2. Create an exciting radio announcement based on the book you read.
3. List 3 things that made your book a good science fiction book.

Nonfiction
Learn Something New – books that have facts and figures. All are located in the center of the library.
Pick a subject you want to learn more about and have fun! Complete one of the following activities:
1, List 3 interesting facts that you didn’t know before. 2. Make a list of 3 vocabulary words found in the book you read and use the glossary to write their definitions. 3. Draw a picture of something you learned and write a caption underneath describing what you drew. 4. Take a quiz on ReadnQuiz.

Animals - fiction
Animals That Talk Back– Have you ever had a conversation with an animal? When animals are the main character, the author lets you find out what animals think and talk about. Choose a fiction book where the animal is the main character. Listen to the talking/thinking of the animal to see what important problem the animal must solve. Complete one of the following activities:
1, If you have a pet, make up a story adventure in which you are able to talk to your pet. 2. Write 3 questions and answers that you would ask the main character in the book you read. 3. Make a list of all the animals you can find or see on your way to school. 4. Take a quiz on ReadnQuiz.

Sports
The Sporting Life– To achieve success in a sport takes many long hours of practice and discipline. Yet many times the effort is worth it. Choose a sports book to enjoy a story of a person’s interest in a sport and appreciate the individual’s struggle. Think about what qualities were needed to achieve in this sport. Complete one of the following activities:
1, Talk to Ms. Weadley about the book you read and tell her one new thing you learned about the sport. 2. Write 3 questions you would ask the sports figure. 3. What qualities do you feel were necessary for the main character of the book you read to be successful in that sport? 4. Take a quiz on ReadnQuiz.

Fantasy
Voyage into Fantasy– Imagination is the key to this group of books. The author has turned fantastic happenings into adventures. Choose a fantasy book and give your imagination some exercise. Complete one of the following activities:
1, List 3 events in the book that could not happen in real life. 2. Make a bookmark with a picture showing a scene from the book. 3. Describe an event from the book that you read that was full of vivid description. 4. Take a quiz on ReadnQuiz.

Adventure
Excitement Ahead -‐ creates a situation in which you will be able to feel the excitement as the character passes through the events in the story. Choose an adventure book and notice how the author uses strong action words to give lively descriptions of everything that happens. Complete one of the following activities:
1, Select an exciting part of your story, practice it and read it aloud to your class. 2. Draw a map of the place where your story happened. You will probably have to go back and re-read parts to find out where events took place. 3. Find 5 different action verbs used by the author in the book you read to create suspense in the story. Realistic Fiction
Just Like Me – stories with characters, settings and problems that are similar to “real life”. Complete one of the following activities:
1, Prepare a short talk advertising the book and present it to your class. 2. Name one of the feelings the main character experienced in the book. How would you behave if you were in their place? 3. How is the setting the same or different from your “time and place?” 4. Take a quiz on ReadnQuiz.

Fairy Tales
Once Upon A Time– Here is the marvelous world of make-‐believe!
Some of the most imaginative and creative writings have found their way to you through fairy tales that have been told over and over again, then finally written down.
Choose a fairy tale and while you are reading recognize what makes each story a fairy tale. Try to choose one you have not read before. Complete one of the following activities:
1, Write a different ending for the fairy tale you read. 2. Make a word search or crossword puzzle on the computer using vocabulary and character names from the story. 3. Compare the illustrations from several versions of the same fairy tale that you read. Write which do you like best and why? 4. Take a quiz on ReadnQuiz.

Biography
Footprints in the Sands of Time– Tells about a person’s life, can be an exciting way to experience historical events. The people can be leaders, adventurers, explorers, sports figures or musicians. Choose a biography and note the historical setting. Discover the contributions made by the person about whom you read. Complete one of the following activities:
1, Why did you select the person you read about? What did you learn that you didn’t know? 2. Write 5 questions you would ask the person whom you read about. 3. Make a timeline listing 5 major events in the person’s life. 4. Take a quiz on ReadnQuiz.

Medieval Book Dungeons and Dragons– Enter the world of castles, kings, dungeons and dragons! These stories center on the age in history known as the Middle Ages. Some books are based on fact, most are written with a heavy dash of fantasy. Choose a book that takes place during medieval times to explore the time in history with dragons, knights, superstitions and fears. Complete one of the following activities:
1, Draw a picture of castle. Label the parts and write captions about how those parts were used. 2. What type of clothing was worn by the characters in the book. Use good adjectives to describe them. 3. Pick a section of your book that is only about 1-2 minutes long, practice reading it with good expression, and read it aloud to someone. 4. Historical Fiction-Revolutionary War The Parities and Tories– We live in a country that was once part of England. How this country became separated and why one group of British people wanted to be independent of another group is the basis for these stories. Choose historical fiction book that takes place during the Revolutionary War to understand why the British colonists felt they had to rule themselves. Complete one of the following activities:
1, Pretend you have a cousin in England and you are living in Boston in 1775. Write a letter to your cousin that tries to explain how you feel about an event that happened in the book you read. 2. Based on what you read, what were the difficulties of trying to start a new country? 3. How were the people who lived during the Revolutionary War different from people who live in the 21st Century? 4. Take a quiz on ReadnQuiz.

Newberry Award Super Books– The Newberry Medal began in 1921 to provide more interest in writing books for children. The award is given to the author of the most distinguished contribution to children’s for the previous year. Use the Card Catalog to find the list of Newberry Books and choose one to read. Complete one of the following activities:
1, Why do you think your book was chosen as the best for that year? 2. Write some phrases or sentences from the book you read that show great writing. 3. Look up John Newberry. Why was the medal named for him? 4. Take a quiz on ReadnQuiz.

Historical Fiction -
The Civil War A Nation Divided– The Civil War divided families of our country so that in many families brother fought brother. It destroyed slavery and ended the Southern way of life that depended on slave labor. Choose historical fiction book and as you read notice the feelings of individuals who lived during this time and see how their lives were changed because of the war. Complete one of the following activities:
1, Look up a particular battle or incident during the Civil War and write why it was important. 2. Draw and color pictures of the Confederate and Union flags. 3. Pretend you were living during the Civil War. Write a letter to the main character from the book you read who is fighting for the other side. Career Book
It’s Your Life, What Will You Do With It?– One of the most important decisions of your life is your choice of a career. It can offer adventure, challenge and accomplishment. With it may come also difficulty and disappointment. Choose a career book that may open doors to new fields of interest for you to explore. Complete one of the following activities:
1, What challenges did the main character encounter and how did they meet them? 2. What are some skills that are needed to be successful in the career you read about? 3. Go on the Internet to find out what jobs there are today in your field of interest. Find out the qualifications needed. 4. Take a quiz on ReadnQuiz.

Bluestem
And the Winner is…Fourth and fifth graders in the state of Illinois are able to vote each year for a favorite book to be given the Bluestem Award. You must read 3 Bluestems and pass the quiz on each book in order to be able to vote in February. Choose a Bluestem Book from this year’s nominees OR you may want to look back at the lists from past years since they often have great books too. Complete one of the following activities:
1, Give three reasons why you would or would not recommend this book. 2. Nominate a book that you have read before for next year’s award list. Explain why you believe the book is worthy of the award. 3. Make an advertisement recommending the book you read to other students to encourage them to read and vote for your book. 4. Graphic Novel
It’s An Artist’s Life For Me– A narrative work which uses sequential art, either in an experimental design or in a traditional comic format.
Choose a graphic novel. Complete one of the following activities:
1, The difference between a comic and a graphic novel is that a graphic novel has a beginning and an end. Write a sentence telling about the beginning and the ending of the book you read. 2. If your book is part of a series, list the names of the other graphic novels in the series. 3. Look at a picture in the book you read and use as many adjectives as you can to describe what is happening. 4. Take a quiz on ReadnQuiz.
