Navajo Code TalkersWorld War II. The Pacific. The U.S. was fighting Japan . The radio men were

on the front lines. They sent important messages.

Messages had to be secret of course.

They were in code, and the Japanese broke them all. Except one.

This code is Athabaskan. It is spoken by the Navajo.

There were 400 Navajo Code Talkers. All were Marines. They were trained in radion and sent to the front. There they sent messages in Athabaskan.

BUT IT WAS MORE THAN THAT. They spoke another code in Athabaskan. It was a code inside of a code. Even another Navajo could not understand it.

The Code was top secret until 1968. The Navajo were ordered to tell no one. They were men of honor. They kept their secret for 20 years. So no one knew of these brave men.

Now their story is being told. In 1989, Marine General A.M. Gray spoke in Phoenix, Arizonia. During the war, a lot of soldiers treated the Navajo badly . He said, “We call the ‘Geronimo’ and ‘Chief’. It was insulting”

He had come to say, “We are sorry.” And after all this time, “Thank you”.

About 250 Code Talkers are still living . About 40 heard the general speak.

Madame C.J. Walker

Born Sara Breedlove, Madame C.J. Walker was orphaned at 7, married at 14, and widowed at age 20. Madame Walker went on to become one of the first American female self-made millionaires.

After attending night school, she invented a method for straightening hair with a softener and a metal heating comb in 1905. She sold that and her expanding line of cosmetic products door to door. A competent businesswoman, she soon opened a factory and began manufacturing her beauty products. They became very popular with black women, and made Madame Walker wealthy and successful.

Madame Walker came up with a popular way to sell her products, hiring many African American women to take her products to customers door to door for her. Later, the Avon company would copy the idea to great success.

Walker achieved great wealth – she was worth $ 2 million at her death in 1919. She was a big supporter of African American groups and other organizations. She made donations f money to the NAACP, black education groups, the YWCA and the YMCA.

In 1998 she was honored with her picture on a U.S. postage stamp.

Hostile Counrties

At the end of World War II, the friendship between the US and the Soviet Union became very cold and hostile. These two nations had come out of the war as superpowers with large populations and armies.

The countries were very different. The US government had a democracy, and the Soviet government was communist. The Soviets wanted to expand and control most of Europe. The US wanted to control the power of the Soviets.

Both the US and the Soviet Union had nuclear weapons. They did not want a war. A Cold War happened, though. This war was an agreement between the US and the Soviet Union that there would not be an all-out war at any time.
