Alistair’s Night All is quiet at 2 a.m. and Alistair the cat is ready to play. You will enjoy reading about Alistair’s clever attempts to wake Dan and Becky. Vocabulary words: burglars, dangerous, entertain, lonely, pounce, vase Building Background: Some pets are very active at night. Can you name a pet or another animal that is active at night? What do these animals do while other animals including people sleep? Checking for understanding: One way to understand and follow a story is to think about the point of view which the story is told. Alistair the cat becomes very playful during the night when his owners are asleep. Think about and discuss: What does Alistair do to try to wake up Dan and Becky? Do you think the things Alistair does while his owners are asleep could really happen? What do you think happens when you sleep at night? After reading: Choose 1 Select your favorite attempt of Alistair to wake Dan and Becky.

Draw a picture of the attempt and write a caption to go with the picture.

Bigger Than a Monster Truck Monster Trucks are big, but some vehicles are even larger. You will discover some unusual and enormous vehicles used to move people, dirt, rocks, and other things. Vocabulary words: bridge, bucket, mines, tracks, vehicle, wheels Building Background: Draw a picture of what you think of when you hear about a monster truck. How tall do you think a monster truck is? How big around do you think the monster truck is? Checking for understanding: Sometimes the amount of information is so large it is grouped into sections and each section has its own main idea.
