Types of Reading
On the literacy test you will have several reading and writing tasks to complete.
There are three types of reading on the test:
1) Informational/Text Based Reading- presents ideas and information on a topic
2) Graphic Reading- presents ideas and information with the help of graphic features such as diagrams, photographs, drawings, sketches, patterns, timetables, maps, charts or tables
3) Narrative Reading- a real-life story or a dialogue
What do the informational/text based readings look like? Readings are typically 1-2 pages in
length Each paragraph is numbered for
easy reference to questions The readings include a picture or
graphic related to the text
What do the narrative readings look like?
1-2 pages long
It can be: (1) a real life narrative or (2) a dialogue
Real Life Narrative: is an account of a significant time in an individual’s life
Dialogue: presents a conversation between two or more people
What do you have to do with the readings?
1) Respond to questions about the reading in a short written response (a few sentences).
And/or
2) Answer a series of Multiple Choice questions about the reading.

It is important to know how to read and answer a multiple choice question
Review the “Helpful Hints For Taking A Multiple Choice Test” with your teacher (golden rod ledger handout)

Your answer will be filled in on a Student Answer Sheet – take a look at the example of the “Helpful Hints For Taking Multiple Choice” sheet
Don’t put your answer on the question sheet. It will not be marked.
Check that you are putting your answer in the correct section. Notice that Roman Numerals are used to identify each Section
Section I Section II Section III Section IV Section V Section VII, etc
You must fill in the bubble to show your answer on the Student Answer Sheet (like a scantron)
Your task for today: Informational/ Text Based Readings1. Along with your teacher read the tips
and tricks for Text Based Readings (pink handout).
2. Read the Text Based Readings (white ledger handout) and answer the multiple choice questions.
3. Make sure you transfer your answers to the actual student response sheet (golden rod ledger handout).
4. We will take up answers as a class.

and tricks for Graphic Text (blue handout).
2. Read the Graphic Text (grey ledger handout)and answer the multiple choice questions.
