Today’s Gospel emphasizes one of the most profoundly difficult teachings that Christ not only gives to us, but demands we follow. Humility, for the Lord, is the pinnacle of virtues, for it directly opposes that capital sin from which all our failings stem from: Pride. It is a natural human desire to want to be noticed, affirmed, marveled at. We all have this yearning stamped on our heart and it is placed there for a reason. In and of itself, the desire to be loved is from the Lord and something to be treasured. All we want as adopted sons and daughters is to be held for eternity by our Father. But this desire can be twisted and swayed time and time again by a culture so contrary to the heart of the Gospel. We are told that we are the center of the universe; the “Almighty I” that all others must bow down before and shape their wills to. Of course, in order to achieve such a heightened level, we must acquire as much wealth, prestige, knowledge, and fame as we possibly can. We must fill the emptiness present within us. How could we not? Then, and finally then, will we be loved. When all others know my name, when my face is recognized, when my presence is desired, when my favor is sought, that is when I can truly begin to live. But then that voice arises within us, ever shrill, so very faint. Quiet to the point where we almost didn’t hear it. But in those rare moments spent alone in silence, it arises clear as day. “What about me?” it asks. The voice of the Lord which we have so desperately tried to run

from. That voice which we hoped never to hear, that voice which we tried to drown by pushing it far, far within ourselves. We push Him out, we hide, we run. Because we don’t want to relinquish control. But what if we did? What if we stopped running, what if we turned around, laid ourselves down at the feet of that great Hound of Heaven who never stops pursuing. What if we said to Him, “Here, here I am. I give you everything, my whole self, all I have to give.” Do you think we would then live a life in sorrow? Would we feel dismay at giving ourselves over to the One who we want to love so desperately? What if we started to look around, to really look around at the world outside of us. Would we not see the immortal love that is sustaining all of creation? Would we not recognize how fleeting it is to fill, and how gratifying it is to give? The Lord is crying out to us, hoping and praying that we see Him this Lenten season. But we cannot do so if we have become blinded in our pride. Take those desires of your heart, those wants and needs to be known, loved, and seen, and direct them to the One who wants to satisfy them. The One who knows you more intimately than you know yourself, the One who loves you into existence, the One who sees you as you ought to be seen; marvelous. Let us mirror Mary’s humility this Lent, and empty ourselves so as to provide space for the king of our hearts to come and dwell. He wants to be let in. Will you open the door?

Wash yourselves clean!Put away your misdeeds from before my eyes;cease doing evil; learn to do good.Make justice your aim: redress the wronged, hear the orphan’s plea, defend the widow.

Come now, let us set things right, says the LORD:Though your sins be like scarlet, they may become white as snow;Though they be crimson red, they may become white as wool.If you are willing, and obey, you shall eat the good things of the land; But if you refuse and resist, the sword shall consume you:for the mouth of the LORD has spoken!Responsorial Psalm50:8-9, 16BC-17, 21 AND 23R.    (23b) To the upright I will show the saving power of God.“Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you,for your burnt offerings are before me always.I take from your house no bullock,no goats out of your fold.”R.    To the upright I will show the saving power of God.“Why do you recite my statutes, and profess my covenant with your mouth,Though you hate disciplineand cast my words behind you?”R.    To the upright I will show the saving power of God.“When you do these things, shall I be deaf to it?     Or do you think that I am like yourself?I will correct you by drawing them up before your eyes.He that offers praise as a sacrifice glorifies me;and to him that goes the right way I will show the salvation of God.”R.    To the upright I will show the saving power of God.Verse Before The GospelEZ 18:31

Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying,“The scribes and the Phariseeshave taken their seat on the chair of Moses. Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you,but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice. They tie up heavy burdens hard to carryand lay them on people’s shoulders, but they will not lift a finger to move them. All their works are performed to be seen. They widen their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels. They love places of honor at banquets, seats of honor in synagogues, greetings in marketplaces, and the salutation ‘Rabbi.’As for you, do not be called ‘Rabbi.’You have but one teacher, and you are all brothers.Call no one on earth your father;you have but one Father in heaven.Do not be called ‘Master’;you have but one master, the Christ. The greatest among you must be your servant.Whoever exalts himself will be humbled;but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”
