Gopi’s birthday was on Friday. Hewanted only one present – a birthdayparty! His father was a maali. Hismother was a bai. She did householdchores in a few select houses. Gopiknew that his parents could not affordthe expenses of hosting a fancy birthdayparty for him.

“What’s wrong in dreaming abouthaving a fabulous birthday party?” saidGopi to his friend Sandeep. “A dreamcosts me nothing.”

“I shall hold a party for you when youare 70 years!” promised Sandeep.

“I’ll be an old man by then, myfriend!” retorted Gopi, sarcastically.

“Yes!” said Sandeep. “So there willbe no need for me to spend lavishly onfood. You will not be able to eat much asyou will have no teeth and suffer frompoor digestion. Yes Sir! That’s the besttime to hold your first birthday party.Music and dance too can be banned frommy expense list. You will not be able tohear and your rickety knee bones willrefuse to help your legs jig to a livelytune!”

Gopi pounced on Sandeep in mockfury and started pummelling him.

However, unknown to Gopi, hismother had made up her mind to hold abirthday party for him. It was a gift thathe badly wanted and THAT was what shehad to somehow give to him.

Gopi’s birthday finally came. Gopiwas now officially 9 years old. He wasgifted things that he needed for school– a new geometry box, a water-bottleand a new uniform. His mother told himnot to leave the house. She had invitedhis friends over for lunch. Gopi wasvery astonished. Could he dare to hopethat amma was finally throwing abirthday party for him? Evidenceshowed the contrary. No lavishpreparations were going on in thekitchen. Odd things were being put intothe garden shed – lots of usedcardboard boxes and old newspapers, used candles, dried flowers and leaves, old magazines, empty glass bottles andlast year’s Diwali mud diyas.

“After lunch, your father wants allof you to assemble in the garden shed,”said his mother.

Gopi was horrified. He ferventlyprayed that his father was not going tomake them dig up the garden on hisbirthday! His friends would be veryannoyed to do work after a hearty meal.Oh dear! WHERE was the lunch? Hecould not get a whiff of anything nicewafting from the kitchen. Each visit tothe kitchen confirmed that there wasNO food bubbling on the stove.

“Bhaiyya?” asked Mitu, his sister.“Why are you inspecting the kitchenevery minute? Are you hungry?”

“No!” said Gopi.

“What are we having for lunch?”asked his little brother, Dipu. “I heardamma say she is NOT cooking lunchtoday!”

Now Gopi was really very, VERYworried. Why were they hosting a lunchparty when the cook was taking a siesta?Just then the doorbell rang. A friend hadfinally come.

“Auntyji told me not to bring any gift.Maa told me to return this big steeltiffin box to her,” said Sandeep.

“Keep it in the kitchen,” said Gopi.He wondered how he was going to say,“There is NO lunch being cookedtoday!”

Then Rohit, Poonam, Kanchan andMudit too came. Mitu opened the door.

Gopi heard a lot of muffled giggles. Hecould not see what was happening asSandeep had dropped his marbles and hehad to help him pick them up from thefloor.

They all sang popular filmi tunes. Then they played rummy as they waitedfor lunch to be served. Gopi was notenjoying himself. Only one thoughtdrummed incessantly inside his head.WHAT was his mother going to servethem for lunch? A hurried trip to thekitchen again confirmed nothing was onthe stove. There was only a hugeshopping bag on the kitchen slab. Hecould see spinach leaves on the top ofthe bag. The only utensil to be seen wasthe tiffin box brought by Sandeep.

“Slices of gajar, mooli and pyazseasoned with nimbu pani and maybe aglass of lassi!” whispered Mitu frombehind him, in a low voice.

“Do you have to tiptoe about like acat?” asked Gopi, angrily.

When he went back to the livingroom he found Dipu telling his friendsthat lunch would be served in half-an-hour. Gopi was in mental agony. WHATlunch was going to be served when therewas NO cooked food in the kitchen?Thirty minutes ticked away slowly forthe birthday boy. When lunch was finallyserved, Gopi’s eyes nearly popped outof their sockets in disbelief! There wasmatar pulao, aloo-gobi sabzi, raita, pooris and a salad plate with slicedgajar, mooli, pyaz and hari mirch, anda big, chocolate cake!

“I baked a cake for you,” said hismother. “Your friends’ mothers eachcooked a dish. THAT is their gift to you! After lunch all of you go to the shed. You have to make some gifts for yourfriends!”

Gopi and his friends had a busy fun-filled afternoon. They re-cycled ‘waste’to make gifts for their friends!

Gopi made pencil/pen stands fromre-cycled newspaper.

Poonam made vases. She paintedflowers on discarded glass bottles.

Kanchan made bookmarks from oldgreeting cards. She decorated eachbookmark with crushed dried colourfulleaves and flowers!

Rohit made candles in all shapes andsizes from left-over wax.

Sandeep made origami animals withglossy paper taken from discardedmagazines.

Mudit made Ganesha wall hangingswith cardboard taken from old cardboardpacking boxes. He pasted crushedflowers and seeds on each Ganesha.

Mitu and Dipu, Gopi’s little brothers, too had fun. They painted finger motifson mud diyas!

“Woof!”

“Who said that?” asked Sandeep.

“Woof-WOOF!”

The friends looked suspiciously ateach other. Someone was pretending tobe a puppy! Each one shook their head.

“Someone is a clever ventriloquist!”insisted Sandeep, looking at Muditsuspiciously as his friend’s lips seemedto be ‘moving’.

“Bubble-gum!” mumbled Mudit.

Gopi went out of the shed. He founda small little puppy tethered to his cycle!

“Woof! Woof-WOOF!” said puppy, enthusiastically. Finally he was going tobe set free! There was a small noteattached to his collar. It read – “I herebydeclare that Gopi is my master. When Imake trouble, punish him!”

Gopi was ecstatic. His friends wereenvious. Gopi had got a wonderful gift! They all had a whale of a time beingchased by a lively puppy. It was only atnight that Gopi wondered who had givenhim the puppy.

“Not amma,” said Mitu. “She hatesdogs.”

“She also hates cats!” said Dipu, sadly.

“Why didn’t you tell him YOU gavehim the pup?” said Gopi’s father to hiswife later that night.

“If I told him it was I who gifted himthe dog then our Dipu will want a cat!”retorted Gopi’s mother. “Let it remainan unsolved mystery. Only then willpeace reign in this house!”

Trip to SrinagarSakshi Prakash

My parents decided to visit Srinagarduring the winter vacation last year. Iknew that Srinagar is a very beautifulplace, so I became very excited when theplan for the trip was made. Actually, before coming to Delhi, I used to live inJammu. So visiting Srinagar was mydream. Also, discovering new places ismy passion.

Srinagar has a long history, datingback at least to the 3rd century BC andhas been known by different names. The city was founded by the kingPravarasena II over 2,000 years agowho named it Parvasenpur. The citywas then a part of the Maurya Empire, one of the largest empires of the IndianSub-continent.

Day and night I used to think aboutthe trip. What will I do there? Howmuch fun will I have? And so on. Finallythe day came for which I had beenwaiting desperately. When I entered intothe plane, I was shocked to see that theplane was so huge and gigantic. It was afifty minute flight. When we landed inSrinagar, suddenly rainfall started takingplace. The whole view was like a feastfor the eyes. Then we boarded a car tothe hotel.

At first we went to Gulmarg. Thesnow there reminded me of the film—”Kashmir Ki Kali” staring late ShammiKapoor and Sharmila Tagore. I played alot with snow. Then, we traveled inGandola (trolley). The view of the snowyplace was very beautiful from above. At

the end of the day wewent back to ourhotel.

The next day wewent to Dal Lake,S h a n k a r a c h a r y aMandir and MughalGarden. Dal Lakewas full of boats andshikaras. I travelledin a boat with myfamily. The boat ridewas fun filled andenjoyable.

After taking theboat ride, I talked to one

of the Shikara owners. He toldme that Dal Lake is their highway and

Shikara their BMW. They don’t haveto go anywhere to find food, post officeetc. as everything is there in the lake.In Shankaracharya Mandir, there were somany stairs that I felt restless whileclimbing them. There we prayed to theGod and then moved to our nextdestination, Mughal Garden.

In Mughal Garden we found somany varieties of flowers. It was asif the heaven had fallen there. Afterhaving seen so many places, we hadto return to our home as the holidayswere coming to an end. It was amemorable experience which I wouldnever forget.

“Prateek…wake up…wake up…Theteacher is heading towards your seat.”

“Yes, yes I am awake…” I told mypartner.

“Prateek, sleeping again??!! Why doyou sleep here? Is this your bedroom?...Idon’t want such students in myclass…get out.”

This is my life. My day starts withthe breakfast of my teacher’s lecture, followed by standing hours in front ofthe principal’s room and looking at theworn-off plasters of my school’s wall. Now, it is more like my schedule which

has been already prescribed in the holylist of our school’s defaulters.

“Prateek…whatever you did todayyou got to bear the consequences. Sothe school has decided to punish youand for that you have to stay back afterschool…”

“But miss…what have I done?” Iasked in a low voice.

She said, "I would clean theclassrooms. The job that I hated themost."

After finishing my job… I got backhome at five in the evening. I was like a

person who had been mentally torturedin a jail for a crime which he didn’tknow; all my body parts were aching…soI just fell on my bed.

All of a sudden my alarm clock startedringing…when I saw the time, it was justfive minutes to eight in the morning…

I did not waste a minute and startedto pack my bag for school.

“What’s happening?... Not a minutehas passed since I went to my bed and my“dear” alarm clock has started to ring…”But, on second thoughts,I opened myroom’s door and went downstairs. WhatI saw there left me perplexed. It was areal railway platform!!!

Someone had told me before that, platforms are a nice place. As I was nottoo fond of going to school I preferredto go there. When I inspected the place,I got to know that it was not like usualplatforms. The strangest thing about theplace was that everything was white.

White pillars, white trains and eventhe men there had painted their bodies allin white…it was really becoming a queerplace with the passage of the time.

“Hello! Mr…Whatever is yourname…What are you doing here…don’tyou know the DD express is waiting foryou? Leave this place for the goodones…this is not meant for the kids likeyou,” a strange voice spoke in my ears.

“But Sir…who are you…and howcome am I here? I was just opening myroom’s door and all of a sudden I gothere,” I asked the man humbly.

“You, yes Mr. Prateek…” he lookedat the list. “Friend, you have been givena ticket for the train to deadly

desert…you should feel lucky enoughthat the number of kids that reached ouroffice today were less and as aconsequence you have got theopportunity.. now don’t argue and getinto the train.”

I was really disturbed and itaggravated when an invisible powerpulled me into the train.

The train was really intimidating initself. The train had red hot iron coatingwith a sketch of flames on thecompartments…even the tracks werereleasing smoke and fire…and it gave anexpression that desert was not a niceplace.

“Listen,” another quiet strange voicecame from the train but, now I was usedto it.

“My name is Kim. And you shouldknow from now, I am the most powerfulkid here in the desert…and these peopleare also scared of me. You better keep adistance from me.”

“Good job, but can you please tellme why am I with you?”

“With me” he laughed…listen friendwe all are the inhabitants of thedesert…and this train is going to thedesert. This desert is the place where youare treated according to the deeds you do.”

Abruptly, my eyes went towards thewindow. It was a scary scene…peoplelike zombies with skeletal bodies wereroaming there…their eyes were deepinside their sockets; it was like my worstnightmare coming true.

“Kids…come this way!!” a shadowapproached our cabin and anothermoment we all were seen standing in a

Page 15: Readers’ Club Bulletin...Mudit made Ganesha wall hangings with cardboard taken from old cardboard packing boxes. He pasted crushed flowers and seeds on each Ganesha. Mitu and Dipu,

13Readers’ Club Bulletin December 2011/

queue, waiting for our punishments. Iwas scared as I knew that I had also donemany bad things in my school.

Kim had told me that these peoplewere really cruel but they also had asense of not punishing the kids who werealready in pain. Being a regular defaulterat my school I had already learnt the artof manipulating the situations in myfavour. So, I stood there with twistedlimbs and face…pretending to be asufferer.

“Oh! Poor little child…how comeare you here,” a man asked me.

I kept on pretending.“Doesn’t matter. You can go to that

juvenile room and wait for the decision.”I really rejoiced at this verdict…But

I had totally forgotten about my mother’swords that honesty always wins…Andunfortunately, this time too my motherturned out to be right.

Kim betrayed me and told the truthto them…and their fuming masteraccordingly ordered that I be thrown inerupting magma in the desert. But, thistime too…god save me.

Out of the blue a man wearing a whitegown appeared at the gateway with anagreement in hand. Seeing him otherkids started to talk and I got to know thathe was an angel from wonderland.

He told them that the masters ofwonderland have called me because ofmy intellect.

He came towards me and cast a spelland the next moment we were inparadise..… the wonderful wonder

land..… most joyful place…My joygrew when the messenger turned out tobe my mother who was disguised in hisclothes…

“Son…for your information we musttell you that these desert zombies werenot the one to call you. This was just anact to make you realize that you shouldnever wave from your duty…you astudent, always do your duty, if I am notthere with you it doesn’t matter. Yourintellect will always be there to guideyou…”

She disappeared and my eyes openedin a hospital.

“Where am I?”“Prateek…you are in the hospital

and by the blessings of god, you are fine.Your teachers brought you here.”

My teachers told me that whilecleaning the classrooms I fell down andthey brought me here.

I realized that it was just a dream but,for me it was more than a dream as itopened the doors of my sleeping mind

The King and the SquirrelManoj Das

Once upon a time, there was a king whowas very proud of himself. He was young,well-read and intelligent and none of theyouths of his kingdom equalled him inphysical strength or valour. Needless tosay, he was naturally the richest man inthe kingdom.

One day, while strolling in his garden,he said to his wise, old minister, “I amsure no one would ever dare to boastbefore me about anything. I am glad that

I am superior to everybody in everyrespect.”

The old minister, who generallyagreed with everything the young Kingsaid, did not reply. He did not even smile.

The King was very surprised. “Why,my good minister, why do you keepquiet?” he asked.

The minister smiled and replied, “Mynoble Lord, to be quite frank, you cannever be sure that no one will ever boast

before you. Though it is a fact that youare superior to everyone in the kingdom,it is quite possible that there are peoplewho will not realise this. Everybody hashis own vanity. Often it is seen that evena weakling considers himself theboldest of knights. We should not besurprised if somebody, ignorant of yoursuperiority, boasts before you some day.The best we can do is to ignore such afellow. To take notice of the vanity ofothers is to lose one’s own peace ofmind.”

While the minister was talking, a tinysquirrel jumped forward and climbed amarble column in front of them. In hisfront paws, he held high a small coin.

The king was amused. Sure that theKing noticed him, the squirrel chanted:

I have got so much wealthHow much has the King? How miserable he looks, indeed!Envy causing him suffering. The King was furious. He rushed at

the squirrel before the minister couldsay a word. The squirrel slipped awaybut dropped the coin. The King pocketedit. Looking at the minister, he smiled

with satisfaction. The minister, however, did not seem to appreciate his action.

It was evening and the King and hisminister were busy discussing someimportant issues with the emissariesfrom the neighbouring kingdoms.Suddenly, from above, they heard thesquirrel chanting:

If the King is so rich and so proudIt is with my wealth! I disclose this

aloud! The King’s blood boiled with anger.

But he had to control himself as he wasin the company of honoured guests. Thesquirrel hopped from pillar to pillar andrepeated his verse. The emissaries werecurious, but they did not laugh or uttera word, lest the King should feeloffended.

After the guests had left, the Kingsearched for the squirrel. He lookedeverywhere but could not find him.Restless, he could not sleep a wink atnight.

The King used to began his day bygiving alms to the poor. The next

Out of fear for my strength! The King chased the squirrel like

mad man. But again the squirrel gavehim the slip. Once again sleep evadedthe King at night. The squirrel’s tauntingwords haunted him.

As soon as the day broke, the Kingsummoned the minister. “We shouldmobilize all our soldiers and orderthem to kill all the squirrels in thekingdom. That will solve the problem,”he said.

“My Lord!” The minister replied,"I understand your wrath. But thereis no certainty that your soldierswill succeed in kill ing all thesquirrels in the land. Spread over arevast stretches of corn fields, thedense forests of our land where mencannot enter, and on the lofty peaksof our mountains, their number canrun into millions! Besides, a squirreldoes not need a passport to enter ourland. Any number of squirrels from

morning, while he was doing so thesquirrel appeared near the door andsquealed:

How proudly he distributes alms! But is it not my wealth that

adorns his palms? The King ordered his attendants to

capture the squirrel. But the squirrelmanaged to slip away. It was with greatdifficulty that the poor King suppressedhis surging anger.

A few hours later, when the King wasjust about to sit down, the squirrelpeeped through the window and sang: Is it not funny That with my money Many a dish The King would relish!

The King was so enraged that hecould not swallow even a morsel offood. His attendants rushed aroundtrying to catch the naughty creature. Butthe squirrel was nowhere to be seen.

Early that night, just when thehungry King was going to eat his dinner, the squirrel appeared in front of him andrepeated the verse that had made himgive up his lunch.

The king felt absolutely helpless. Hetook out the squirrel’s coin from hispocket and hurled it at him. The squirrelpicked it up immediately. But onleaving, he chanted:

Victory to myself, the mightysquirrel

To all the world I can tellTheKing did return all my wealth

our neighbouring lands may pour intoour kingdom. Our soldiers, who areso brave in battles, would feelsurprised and unhappy when asked tofight tiny enemies like squirrels.Imagine their disappointment whenthey would not be altogethervictorious. And what will our peoplesay and the future historians writeabout you? Would it not be funny forthe students of tomorrow to read:Once upon a time, there was a kingwho led his army against squirrels!”

“What then should I do? asked theharassed King.

“My Lord, simply ignore thecreature. If you had paid no attention tohim when he first appeared in the garden,or better still, without getting angry youhad just listened to his idle boasts, hecould not have caused you so muchunhappiness. However, it is never too

late to change one’s attitude for thebetter.

A little later, the squirrelapproached the King andrepeated the theme that the

King had been obliged to return hiswealth out of fear.

This time the King stood unmoved. He smiled and said gently:Who does not know that the mightysquirrelIn wealth and wisdom can easilyexcelA king or a monarch, as the yawn ofa hen

Excels in expanse the mightyocean?

The squirrel was delighted. Helooked at the King in pleasant surprise.Without a word, he scampered away, never to be seen again.
