23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time (B)

Reflection: Jesus said to the deaf man who had also a speech impediment ‘ Ephphatha’ that is ‘Be opened’. Is he not addressing the same words to us? An invitation also to us. ‘Be opened’ – to the goodness of other people, the inno-

cence of babies, the gentleness of the old, the beauties of crea-tion, the knowing smile or people in love, the so many gifts we receive from God daily. ‘Be opened’ to the unspoken cry for friendship of another, to the call of a lonely person living nearby, the call to share what is sur-plus to me and no longer needed instead of leaving them in my cupboard when I may never use them again. Can I practicalise the ‘Be opened’ invitation of Jesus? We all know that we ourselves and others will be the better for it.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, you alone can open the ears of our hearts and free the tongues of our spirits to glorify and praise you by being sensitive as Jesus was to those needing our kindness in whatever form you reveal this to us. Amen

First Reading: Isaiah 35:4-7 Theme: The ears of the deaf shall be unsealed and the tongues of the dumb shall be loosed.

Say to all faint hearts, Courage! Do not be afraid. Look, your God is coming, venge-ance is coming, the retribution of God; he is coming to save you. Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, the ears of the deaf unsealed, then the lame shall leap like a deer and the tongues of the dumb sing for joy; for water gushes in the desert, streams in the wasteland, the scorched earth becomes a lake, the parched land springs of wa-ter. The word of the Lord. R/. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm: My soul, give praise to the Lord.

Second Reading: James 2:1-5 Theme: God chose the poor to be the heirs to the kingdom.

My brothers, do not try to combine faith in Jesus Christ, our glorified Lord, with the making of distinctions between classes of people. Now suppose a man comes into your synagogue, beautifully dressed and with a gold ring on, and at the same time a poor man comes in, in shabby clothes, and you take notice of the well-dressed man, and say, 'Come this way to the best seats'; then you tell the poor man, 'Stand over there' or 'You can sit on the floor by my foot-rest.' Can't you see that you have used two different standards in your mind, and turned yourselves into judges, and corrupt judges at that? Listen, my dear brothers: it was those who are poor according to the world that God chose, to be rich in faith and to be the heirs to the kingdom which he promised to those who love him. The word of the Lord. R/. Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation: Alleluia! Alleluia! Speak, Lord, your servant is listening: you have the message of eternal life. Alleluia!

Gospel Reading: Mark 7:31-37 Theme: He makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak.

Returning from the district of Tyre, Jesus went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, right through the Decapolis region. And they brought him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they asked him to lay his hand on him. He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, put his fingers into the man's ears and touched his tongue with spittle. Then looking up to heaven he sighed; and he said to him, 'Ephphatha', that is, 'Be opened.' And his ears were opened, and the ligament of his tongue was loosened and he spoke clearly. And Jesus ordered them to tell no one about it, but the more he insisted, the more widely they published it. Their admiration was unbounded. 'He has done all things well,' they said, 'he makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak.' The Gospel of the Lord. R/. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Communion Antiphon: Like the deer that yearns for running streams, so my soul is yearning for you, my God; my soul is thirsting for God, the living God.

A few excerpts from literature produced for the Adoremus—Eucharistic Congress:

Peoples Ponderings: This weekend I will be attending Adoremus—the National Eucharistic Congress, in Liverpool. This will be a gathering of nearly 10,000 people to learn more about the Eucharist and Adora-tion. The main event takes place on Saturday with the key note speaker being Bishop Robert Barron from the United States. I have been lucky enough to hear him speak before during my time at seminary and I am sure that he will give all those attending plenty to think about. The great danger with such events is that they happen and then nothing changes in our parishes. The Diocese is preparing a day to look at the legacy of Adoremus in October, which we will advertise soon. One of my hopes in the parish has been to run more catechetical pro-grammes and I am delighted that Seminarian Liam Carpenter who is based at St Berna-dette's is going to run the Catholicism Course for our parishes starting on Thursday 11th Oc-tober. It will use the superb DVD series produced by Bishop Robert Barron and a chance for Questions and Answers. I would encourage people to attend this event, as it looks at all the areas of our Catholic Faith, it would also be good for those thinking about joining the Catholic Church. Fr. Neil

Gestures of Adoration: St Thomas Aquinas explains that both angels and humans adore God spiritually, but hu-mans in addition adore with our bodies. This is a great prompt to us, especially before the Eucharist. Kneeling, putting hands together in prayer, bowing, genuflecting, making the sign of the cross as we pass a church which con-tains the Blessed Sacrament and similar ges-tures, includes our bodies wonderfully in ado-ration prayer.

Keeping Silence: Contemporary research tells us that silence helps to restore well-being and keep our men-tal health sound. What is more, silence is a key to our own inner world where we meet God face to face. It is not selfish, therefore, to regularly seek a quiet sanctuary in the midst of the noises of our daily living. Time before the Blessed Sacrament offers a precious op-portunity to spend a few moments in a quiet environment and allow the noises fade into the background so that we can focus on what is in front of us: the silent sacrament of God’s love. Silence is God’s first language; everything else is a poor translation. In order to hear that language, we must learn to be still and to rest in God. Thomas Keating

Listening: When we come to the Lord, we often have a list of petitions we would like to voice. This is very good and a healthy part of prayer. How-ever, it is important to give God a chance to answer too. After all, prayer is a conversa-tion, not a monologue. So, if we start a prayer in a mode of ‘Listen, Lord, your servant is speaking,’ we then need to allow for a mode of ‘Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.’ At the Transfiguration, the disciples are in turn told to listen to Jesus. The time, in front of the Blessed Sacrament, is a good oppor-tunity to do just that.

Jesus can be present to us in all sorts of ways—but his Eucharistic presence is a great gift —assuring us that he is indeed with us always—to the end of the age.

Whether we pray standing or kneeling or sitting or prone we know that God is with us. All we must do is recognise this moment.
