This new designation authorizes the school to offer the Middle Years Programme for grades 9 and 10. In 2018, Jefferson was authorized to offer the Diploma Programme for grades 11 and 12. $1 million grant propels propane buses SAISD will benefit from a $1 million grant from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), which will enable the District to replace 19 diesel school buses with propane. The grant announcement was made during a luncheon for leaders in the propane industry, including members of the Advisory Committee for the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC). They will be honored at a ceremony scheduled for Aug. 17 at the Alamo Convocation Center. Beginning this summer, principals Dr. Moises Ortiz with Rhodes Middle School and Marco Morales with J.T. Brackenridge Elementary School will be part of the Cahn Fellows Program for Distinguished Principals at Teachers College, Columbia University, while continuing to work full-time as school principals in SAISD. Ortiz and Morales are the first in San Antonio to be accepted into the 13-month prestigious professional development program. The program seeks to improve large urban public school systems by recognizing the best school leaders and, over the long term, elevating student learning and achievement. Perry (left), who now represents District 2, took the Oath of Office that evening, along with returning Trustees Patti Radle (top right) and Christina Martinez (bottom right), who represent Districts 5 and 6, respectively. She replaces James Howard, who has served on the Board for more than 20 years. Perry was sworn in by the Honorable Judge Alfredo Ximenez. VALEDICTORIANS International adventures in store for senior Curtina Lily, a senior at the Advanced Learning Academy at Fox Tech, has been selected to participate in the selective National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) program this summer. Through NSLI-Y, a U.S. Department of State program, Curtina will be traveling to Seoul, South Korea, to study Korean language and culture for six weeks this summer. Dual language program continues to grow Next school year, SAISD will expand the number of schools offering dual language programs from 45 to 48 campuses, serving more than 6,000 students district-wide. While the initial expansion of dual language programs at SAISD over the past three years took place primarily in the lower grades, the 2019-20 school year will see three new secondary schools coming on board: Lanier High School, Edison High School and Whittier Middle School. Highlands High School celebrated its 60th anniversary with a reception and open house last month (pictured), and this month, Tafolla Middle School recognized its 50th year.
