Remembering Paul Jonas By Debbie Jonas Paul Jonas was raised with a strong belief in giving back to the community and helping others – this was the working out of Christianity for him. He volunteered one college summer on an American Indian reservation in Michigan and gave serious thought to becoming a Catholic priest (glad he didn't ). He also was a "Big Brother" as a 20-something single guy while living in Montana. How to work out our faith in practical and impactful ways was something Paul always thought about in a very deep way. After college Paul used his journalism degree by working at small newspapers in Montana for 4-5 years. He then transitioned into Public Relations after moving back to Denver, working for an ad agency before moving into the non-profit realm with a PR position at the United Way. Paul wrote a large part of the United Way’s ‘100-year history’ before continuing his PR career at National Jewish and the American Water Works Association. Paul, however, still felt something was missing from his professional life, and it wasn’t until he started working in Planned Giving that he found his true calling. He wanted to work for charities that were helping those less fortunate – people impacted by disasters, abuse and illness. Being involved with the nonprofit community spilled over into our dating and married life. In addition to being involved in our church, Paul felt very strongly that we should do volunteer work as a couple – I think he was checking me out to see if I had a 'volunteer gene' ( ). So we both read for the blind through the American Red Cross long before Paul worked there, something we continued until our first child was born. Paul was an incredible father. He was always so involved with our children Sophie and Peter. He never passed up an opportunity (I think daily) to tell them that he loved them and was proud of their achievements and the character qualities they were developing. He wanted to instill in them the value of compassionate care for others through faith and work. Paul was never about ego. He was truly kind. He was comfortable to be with – someone you could trust, steady. He was very bright and mastered complex financial concepts around Planned Giving. He wanted to be used for good in some way in our ‘retirement’ years. He was also a very generous person. He/we always gave to the charities he worked for – Paul felt that he could not honestly ask others to give if he didn't set an example. Lest he sound like a saint – Paul would often quote from Monty Python's Holy Grail, could talk sports ad nauseam () and he could put away a few beers. He was famous for his dry one line zingers and loved to laugh and sing goofy commercial jingles. He was passionate about college basketball (especially his beloved Creighton Bluejays). And of course, he loved the mountains – especially hiking high mountain passes in the Rockies. My cousin once described Paul as living an ordinary life in an extraordinary way. It’s a good description. Paul was always grateful for the blessings in his life – his children and family, his faith in God, and meaningful work that showed a deep concern for others. He left us too soon – and we miss him so very much. He left a legacy that will continue on in his children and others his life has touched, professionally and personally.
