AmericanswithDisabilitiesActof1990hasmandatedstandardsforaccessanduseofbuildingsin2010ADAStandardsforAccessibleDesignandtheGuidetotheADAStandards,publishedbyandenforcedbytheU.S.Dept.ofJustice.Olderlaboratorybuildingscanbeadapted,modified,andrenovatedtomeetADAStandardsforgeneralaccessibilitythatmeetADAStandards.Itisalsopossibletoreconstructsomeolderlaboratoryspacesthatwouldimprovesafetyforpersonswithdisabilities. Inaddition,theU.S.DepartmentofLabor,OccupationalHealthandSafetyAdministration(OSHA),aswellasnational,state,andmunicipalbuildingcodesdevelopandenforceotheraccessibilityrequirementsforbuildingsusedbythepublicandworkers.Academicandresearchinstitutes(example:Yang-TanInstituteonEmploymentandDisabilityandNortheastADACenteratCornellUniversity),certainprofessionalorganizations(example:AmericanChemicalSociety),andlaboratorydesignguidelinesand“UniversalDesign”booksprovideinformationand

ThispresentationwillinformyouoftheessentialaspectsoftheADAStandardsforAccessibleDesignthatprovideasafeenvironmentinlaboratorysciencebuildingsandaccessibilitywithinlaboratoryspaces.Thispresentationwilldiscussspecificsafetyconsiderationsthatpersonswithdisabilitiesmayrequire:laboratorylayout,egress,accesstolabsafetyequipmentanddevices,laboratoryfurniture,andworkstations.Theseissuesareofgreatimportanceinlaboratoriesthatusechemicalsandotherhazardousmaterialsand/orperformoperationsandexperimentsthatmaybehazardous.

ABSTRACT Obstaclesarenotlimitationsunlesstheyareallowedtoobstructthepath.Furthermore,individualswhoarecommittedtoachievinggoalsandnotacceptingsociety’sperceivedlimitationsgenerallyaremoreenthusiasticaboutthesubjectsinwhichtheyfacechallenges.Thisistrueformoststudentswithdisabilities,especiallythoseinterestedinpursuingSTEMrelatedcareers.Althoughtremendousstrideshavebeenmadeinaccommodatingandincludingstudentswithdisabilities,thereremainasignificantnumberofstudentswho,duetoinsufficientaccommodations,lackofencouragement,and/orpersonaldoubt,refrainfromenteringSTEMdegreeprograms.Acknowledgingthefactthatthemissionofeducatorsistoexpandthemindsofstudentsandhelpthemcultivatetheirpassions,itiscriticalthatthosewithdisabilities(andthosewhohaveexperienceworkingwithstudentswithdisabilities)informthebroaderscientificcommunityofthebestpracticesforsupportingthelearningstylesofalltypesofstudents. Primarilyfocusingonaccommodationsforstudentswhoareblindorhavelowvision,thispresentationseekstoraiseawarenessabouttheinnumerableadaptationsthatcanbemadetoenhancethelearningexperienceforindividualswithdisabilities.Providingaglanceintomylifeasalegallyblindbiochemistrystudent,Iwilltouchonthefollowingtopics:reasonableaccommodationsforbothlectureandlabandwhichworkedbestforme,theimportanceofofficehoursandsupportiveprofessors,theroleofaguidedog(ifapplicable),andlastly,someprogramsandtechnologiesthatareavailabletoaidstudentswithdisabilities.Bysharingmyexperiencesandknowledgeaboutsomecommonaccommodationsforblindandlowvisionstudents,Iamhopefulthateducatorswillbemoreequippedtoaidstudentswithdisabilities,andultimately,demonstratetostudentsthattheycaninfactpursuetheirdreams.
