Inaddition,theU.S.DepartmentofLabor,OccupationalHealthandSafetyAdministration(OSHA),aswellasnational,state,andmunicipalbuildingcodesdevelopandenforceotheraccessibilityrequirementsforbuildingsusedbythepublicandworkers.Academicandresearchinstitutes(example:Yang-TanInstituteonEmploymentandDisabilityandNortheastADACenteratCornellUniversity),certainprofessionalorganizations(example:AmericanChemicalSociety),andlaboratorydesignguidelinesand“UniversalDesign”booksprovideinformationand

ThispresentationwillinformyouoftheessentialaspectsoftheADAStandardsforAccessibleDesignthatprovideasafeenvironmentinlaboratorysciencebuildingsandaccessibilitywithinlaboratoryspaces.Thispresentationwilldiscussspecificsafetyconsiderationsthatpersonswithdisabilitiesmayrequire:laboratorylayout,egress,accesstolabsafetyequipmentanddevices,laboratoryfurniture,andworkstations.Theseissuesareofgreatimportanceinlaboratoriesthatusechemicalsandotherhazardousmaterialsand/orperformoperationsandexperimentsthatmaybehazardous.

ABSTRACT Obstaclesarenotlimitationsunlesstheyareallowedtoobstructthepath.Furthermore,individualswhoarecommittedtoachievinggoalsandnotacceptingsociety’sperceivedlimitationsgenerallyaremoreenthusiasticaboutthesubjectsinwhichtheyfacechallenges.Thisistrueformoststudentswithdisabilities,especiallythoseinterestedinpursuingSTEMrelatedcareers.Althoughtremendousstrideshavebeenmadeinaccommodatingandincludingstudentswithdisabilities,thereremainasignificantnumberofstudentswho,duetoinsufficientaccommodations,lackofencouragement,and/orpersonaldoubt,refrainfromenteringSTEMdegreeprograms.Acknowledgingthefactthatthemissionofeducatorsistoexpandthemindsofstudentsandhelpthemcultivatetheirpassions,itiscriticalthatthosewithdisabilities(andthosewhohaveexperienceworkingwithstudentswithdisabilities)informthebroaderscientificcommunityofthebestpracticesforsupportingthelearningstylesofalltypesofstudents.
