Report From The UNH Interop Lab – Lincoln Lavoie Focus on G.FAST

The UNH Interoperability Lab has several technology projects that are under

evaluation and testing that are related to the future of our telecommunications

networks. The UNH IOL is the only certified testing lab to offer these

services. Lincoln Lavoie will highlight some of these futuristic projects but will

focus on the current excitement at the Lab with G.FAST and squeezing every

possible amount of bandwidth out of your installed copper infrastructure.

Lincoln will provide an overview of the BroadBand Forum G.FAST certification

program. He will include test details within the program, and how/why the tested

features impact real Telco deployments. He will provide examples of how the

tests are structured and run, as well as providing a status update on the trial

certification testing.

G.FAST is a cutting edge copper broadband technology that enables throughput

of better than 1 Gb/s over a single twisted pair. The technology is based on a

signal modulation scheme very similar to the DMT modulation used in VDSL2,

with one notable exception, G.FAST transceivers utilize time-division duplexing

instead of the frequency-division duplexing used in VDSL2.

Stay tuned to the future of BroadBand with this intriguing report from the Interop

Lab.

Cyber Security: Protections for your Network Chris Falk - MPX

The security landscape has changed dramatically over the last few years. The

risks are greater, the attack surface is larger, and people are still, well, people.

This talk will address how small organizations can build a successful information

security program with limited resources. You will leave forewarned about the risks

and consequences of inaction, and forearmed with policy and practice to put in

place tomorrow.

Broadband to Wifi Patrick Moreno - Zyxel

Recently, we have seen a wide variety of Broadband access options that deliver higher performing Internet service. However, what about the Internet access within the home? Having “great” Internet is one thing but, how do I get that Internet throughout the entire home? Subscribers have grown more sophisticated as basic Internet service just doesn’t suffice as it once did. WiFi changed the way we live and interact with each other and we want that ability throughout our home. Service providers have gone from just offering Broadband service to offering home networking as part of their Internet service. “It’s time to take advantage of this emerging WiFi and home networking market by offering these services with your current Internet Broadband service.

Reaching New Heights in Communications The Experience of Climbing Mount Everest

Alan Mallory Climbing Mount Everest is considered one of mankind’s greatest feats of human endurance. The grueling expedition to the top of the world’s highest peak is a journey filled with unparalleled physical and mental challenges and some of the roughest, most extreme conditions imaginable. In 2008, Alan Mallory took on the challenge and set a world record with three other members of his family after an incredible self-guided expedition on the mountain. The expedition challenged the mental, emotional and physical limits of their entire beings and at every stage of the ascent demanded an unwavering commitment to resilience and perseverance. Reaching New Heights in Communications is focused primarily on different communication modes, communicating with important stakeholders, communication barriers that often arise in business and professional relationships, changes in the way we communicate and communication technology. The focus is on how we communicate with customers, team members and other important stakeholders and ways we can help ensure communications efforts are effective.

Hands-on Bonus Activity with Ropes and other Climbing Equipment - Alan Mallory

Alan will demonstrate and provide the audience with the opportunity to have an actual experience with ropes and climbing equipment used for Mountain Climbing.

Paul Looney – Multilink (Quadoptics) Paul Looney is the owner of QuadOptics LLC. a fiber optic representative firm based in New England providing sales engineering support to industry leading manufacturers including Multilink, EXFO, and Sumitomo. Paul started his career in Fiber Optics in 1990 and has held sales and engineering positions with industry innovators such as Alcatel and FICO Inc. He is a Past President of the New England Fiber Optic Council and has trained thousands on the fundamentals of fiber optic communications. Paul will be demonstrating field installable fiber optic connectors from Multilink. Multilink’s Surelight connectors are factory polished to meet insertion loss and reflectance standards. Inserting a connector into a bulkhead without first

inspecting and cleaning both the connector and the bulkhead connector will lead to pitting and scratching of the connectors and as a result high reflectance and BER. Cleaning after the fact will not remove pits and scratches. Pre-Polished Field Installable connectors are ideal for replacing those damaged connectors as well as eliminating drop slack by terminating a cable to the precise length and in emergency restoration applications.
