Reach(Local: in the Community)(Global: Around the World)

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but will have everlasting life.” John 3:16

You just did something that nearly 20 million people cannot do. You read God’s Word in the language that you’ve most likely spoken from infancy – the language you understand best and that touches your heart. In response to this need, in 1942 William Cameron Townsend founded Wycliffe Bible Translators.

AAs a member of Calvary Church, Townsend was supported in the 1930’s as a missionary. It is only natural that some of Calvary’s first missionaries in the 1940’s served with the newly formed Wycliffe Bible Translators in Mexico and South America. One of those first missionaries is also a charter member of Calvary Church, Bethel Bower Blount. If she is able, we will have Bethel join us this year from San Diego where she lives at Mt. Miguel after retiring from her work in Mexico as a Bible Translator since 1945. In the years following, over 100 families from Calvary Church have joined in the opportunity of serving as missionaries with Wycliffe Bible Translators around the the world.

This issue of REACH highlights MC10, Calvary’s Annual Missions Conference. Our first weekend begins with us hosting Wycliffe’s Last Languages Campaign, which will include a variety of cultural experiences, music from around the world, Scripture reading in multiple languages, and amazing guest speakers. In addition, 70 Calvary missionaries will be joining us this year! We will end MC10 with another of our partner agencies – Operation Mobilization, a unique global outreach ministry which began 40 years ago. George Verwer’s vision was to use ships as a platform for discipleship training and sharing the hope of the Gospel to unreached people araround the world. Since then, OM Ships have visited 509 different ports in 162 countries. To date, more than 40 million people have been welcomed onboard one of the ships.

So come along and join us as we hear about the work of global missions around the world!

What do Wycliffe Bible Translators (WBT) and Operation Mobilization (OM) have to do with each other? They both are active Mission Agencies whose goal is getting the word of God into the hands of people so that they can come to know the true and living God. Both WBT and OM have been doing this for almost 50 years, and Calvary Church has been a part of their story.

OOur MC10 theme this year is taken from John 1:14, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14 directs us to the actual Word, Jesus. All scripture, literature, materials that these two agencies translate and make available to the masses is to reach the world with the good news of Jesus Christ.

In addition, that morning we will have ethnomusicologists playing music from around the world and opportunities to go to ten different venues over the two service times to hear from Calvary missionaries speaking.

The second weekend begins with our annual breakfast, but this year the Men and Women will eat together in the Gym as we join together to hear from a Calvary missionary husband and wife team, Jim & Juanita Watters. Saturday evening we will begin our Operation Mobilization weekend with a closing banquet and our speaker George Verwer, the founder of OM, who will also share in our one service Sunday morning program. OM, also known as “the ship miniship ministry” will be a special focus throughout the year ahead. “Logos Hope”, OMs newest ship, which is currently in port in the Caribbean will connect with this summer’s VBS program and it’s High Seas Expedition.

As you look over this year’s schedule we hope that you will be excited about the new opportunities that you will have to meet with missionaries and to hear about how Calvary partners with these two world changing organizations.

mc10: Guest Speakers

“When my wife, Dallas, and I started with Wycliffe 26 years ago, we signed up for Bible translation because of the impact of God’s Word in our own lives. There were people in the world who couldn’t understand the Bible and they had a right to have access to it. At that point in our career, it was about access and understanding. Today we understand things at a deeper level. There is a ‘mystery’ in how language and culture interrelate and work in the heart of men, women and children. When someone speaks your language, they identify with you, affirm the essence of who you are. Alternatively, if they speak in some some other language, they remain foreign and distant. So when God expresses Himself in everyday language, in the language you speak, He becomes a part of your culture…He is no longer a foreign God. This is the privilege we have in Wycliffe: introducing people to a God who not only speaks their language but knows them intimately…to the very depth of who they are…and wants a relationship with them.”

In the summer of 1957, George Verwer and two friends used their vacation to take a truckload oof Gospels to Mexico on their first mission trip. That trip was the birth of what would become OM. After several trips to Mexico, they established ongoing work there and expanded to Spain. After two years, George called for young people to spend the summer of 1962 distributing Christian literature in Europe. His radical commitment to simply hit the streets with literature inspired other young people to join him. That summer 25 million pieces of literature went out across the continent.

Average time spent on the ship is about two hours, but some people just can’t get enough and keep going around and around! Many say they have never experienced such peace as they do on board. But the ministry is about more than tours. The ship hosts events for children, ladies, men and evangelism groups and people interested in getting involved. One youth group visited recently, and afterward, all 17 students gave their lives to Jesus!

CurCurrently, as you read this article, the Logos Hope is in the Caribbean, where most people know OM’s ships as the “book ships.” The bookstore has added literature on HIV/AIDS, a crucial topic in the area. The crew is also involved in outreach to show the people they’re more than just books, and introduce then to the broader OM community. Please pray for smooth sailing and receptive hearts!

George Verwer, founder of OM will be sharing on Saturday evening, March 13, and Sunday morning, March 14. George will have a large amount of books he will be giving away for free on Sunday morning.

Operation Mobilization Logos Hope Ship is supported monthly by Calvary Church due to its unique ministry. The Logos Hope is one of two ships currently serving OM. Launched early last year, it has had over 100,000 visitors visit its deck and hear God’s Word on board. Every visitor sees a brief video about the ship’s ministry, has time to explore the ship and the world’s largest floating bookstore, and then visits a very casual café where they can interact with individual crew members. Crew members keep the conversations centered on the Lord, often telling their own stories of God’s work in their lives. As every visitor leaves the ship thship they are given a copy of the Gospel of John or another piece of Christian literature.

Operation Mobilization

Children's Missions Conference 2010 God is raising up the next generation of missionaries who will take His Word to the nations. This year our Children's Missions Conference theme is, "WORD: Discover it. Decode it. Deliver it." We are so excited to challenge our kids even with this first step of discovering everything that is in the Word of God. Some of these kids will go on to become missionaries who will later decode the Word and deliver it to other people all over the world. We want to show kids what this process looks lilike for many missionaries all over the world and to open their hearts up to the possibility of taking God's Word to the ends of the earth!

Follow the adventure at twitter.com/calvarytown.

Juanita is the daughter of John and Royce Lind, Wycliffe translators for the Highland Popoluca of Mexico. She had most of her schooling by correspondence while living with her family in their village home. She graduated from Rockmont College in Denver, CO in December 1976.

Soon aSoon after their Calvary Church wedding, Jim and Juanita left for “jungle camp” training in Mexico. Later they were assigned as translators to the Tepehuas of Tlachichilco in Vera Cruz, Mexico. In August 2004, the Tepehua Tlachichilco New Testament was published and dedicated! They have served with WBT in a variety of work, including director of Mexico WBT branch; consultants and trainers; translation program among the Pisa Flores Tepehuas; and Jim’s newest venture as a translation consultant in India where the people are culturally similar to those they have worked among for over 30 years now!

DDuring their furloughs Jim received an MA from Talbot in Linguistics, completed studies at Berkeley and defended and filed his dissertation and received his PhD in Linguistics. Juanita received an MA in Language, Reading and Culture from the University of Arizona, and finished her PhD focused in the areas of literacy and language policy.

Jim was born in Peru. His parents, Ken and Vivian Watters, were serving there with Wycliffe, first as translators and then in the area of administration. When they returned to the US home offices, Jim attended Santa Ana schools and joined Calvary Church. He graduated from UCSB in June 1975 with a BA in Anthropology and Linguistics. That summer he met Juanita at the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) in Norman, Oklahoma. Jim and Juanita joined Wycliffe, and were married December 28, 1976.

STUDENT MISSIONS CONFERENCE

“Part rock concert, part trade show, part missions conference. That’s how Urbana was described to us before we went, and in a practical sense, it proved to be a pretty accurate description. But it was also much more for our group of 14 young people who attended the 2009 conference from Calvary Church.

UUrbana is a student missions conference hosted by Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, and held in St. Louis, Missouri every three years for students and young adults from all of over the world who are seeking to learn more about God’s calling in their lives. It has a rich history as a ground breaking experience in the lives of many. Urbana has been held every three years since the first conference in 1946, and and over 235,000 people have attended the event.

The team from Calvary Church consisted of myself and Tootie, attending as adult sponsors, seven high school seniors, and seven college students & young adults. All of the high school attendees were also part of the Calvary Church High School Ministry trip to Ecuador that I had the opportunity to be a part of this past summer. I believe that that trip was a life changing experience for many of those students, and it was awawesome to be a part of this trip with them as they stepped out to take this next step in pursuing God’s calling for them in missions.

More than just a rock concert, trade show or missions conference, Urbana was a time for our group to pursue God’s calling in our lives to serve as He served. We are excited to see how God uses this experience in the lives of these young people who traveled with us to Urbana ‘09.”

Urbana 2009What I took away from Urbana:

A rA real confirmation of where the Lord has me right now. I’m teaching at public high school and it’s my first year and it’s challenging, it’s hard and I love it. He really confirmed that this is where he would have for me at this point in my lifetime and that’s where I am to dwell. The model of ministry Jesus set before us was not only to save people but to come and do life with them.– – Katy Lang

GodGod has called us to a lifetime commitment to HIM, not just a week or short term fling. He desires our whole lives to be surrendered to Him "for we are His workmanship created in Christ Jesus". The challenge to live a life surrendered to Him doesn't necessarily mean being shipped out to Africa to serve, but starts with daily, actively making choices to life with “God eyes”.– – Katie Hummel

Urbana changed my perspective of what it means to be the light of Christ.– Tony Jones

UUrbana was a great experience learning other languages and being exposed to how other people, other cultures worship. And no matter how different or awkward it felt it is still worship and as a body of 16,000 we were pouring out our hearts to Him.- Micah Nellesen

II’ve wanted to be a missionary for a long time. Urbana strengthened my will to pursue His call for my life.– Alyssa Radke

Page 9: REACH | Volume 2 Issue 1

It’s a Spring Sunday morning at Calvary in 2007. I have just retired from my career in industry and I feel God calling me to serve him at Calvary and also to reach out beyond Calvary. But how can God use me? I am no missionary – I spent most of my career in front of a computer. How could God possibly use my experience to serve Him?

II read in the Calvary Current about Campus Crusade’s Global Media Outreach (GMO) - an online ministry designed to help new believers grow in their Christian faith using email. At home that afternoon I checked out the website www.globalmediaoutreach.com. It explains that GMO operates a number of websites with names like jesus2020.com and lifesgreatestquestion.com. These websites clearly present the gospel and invite visitors to pray the prayer of salvation, then are directed to a page whewhere they can ask questions and leave their email address. This is where the volunteers come in to play. A computer sorts the emails and sends them to the volunteers who write back with spiritual guidance.

I filled out the volunteer application online and began to serve as an “Online Missionary.” I received a list of contacts, their country, city, gender, the type of decision they have made, and sometimes comments they leave. Most have just accepted Christ as their Savior or rededicated their lives to Christ. Templates make it easy to reply to them with excellent guidance. Some leave questions or talk about their spiritual journey. These are the most rewarding. Here are some poignant exexamples:

Lawrence, from a Muslim country, asked “Is Jesus God?” Addessy, a young woman from Tanzania, recommitted her life to Christ but didn’t think that God could forgive her for having sex outside of marriage resulting in a child. Carol lost her 27-year-old only child and asked “How can He take my son from me and expect me to be happy?”

It has been a tremendous blessing for me to serve as an “Online Missionary” and especially to help people with such needs. We now have nine “Online Missionaries” at Calvary. Together, we have touched the lives of over 8,000 people this year. That’s equivalent to 183,000 a day, or 2.1 people every second! While this is tremendous, the need is even greater. GMO is growing by over 300% this year so many more volunteers are needed to reach this “field white unto harvest.” In 2010, the the websites will receive about 75 million hits.

How about you? Would you like to reach out to people from around the world and help them get started as Christians and grow? Want to learn more? Check out the web links above and email me at [email protected]. I would love to answer your questions and help you get started.

In addition to Global Media Outreach, there are over 100+ ways you can reach the world for Jesus Christ. Find them online at calvarylife.org/100 and reach the world for His glory.

You are invited on a 40 day spiritual journey to a more generous life. This kind of journey is never easy, but it leads to a life that honors Christ and experiences abundant eternal rewards. We have seen our church members serve with their time in incredible ways, but this could be a great time to consider giving, sacrificially and generously.

As we look toward Easter and the extraordinary sacrifice that Jesus Christ undertook for us on the cross, we want to spend time meditating on that sacrifice and discovering how we can live more generous lives.

WWe are challenging those of us at Calvary Church to do a few things to grow in this area of our lives...

.

.

.

Calvary’s 40 Day Journey to Generosity will begin on February 14. Find out more at calvarylife.org/generosity

Read the booklet called “40 Day Spiritual Journey to a More Generous Life.” We will provide these booklets for free. It only takes a few minutes a day to read each section which provide additional opportunities for prayer, reflection and discussion.

MMeditate on Scriptures about Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross and His victory over death. We will provide a list of these verses.

AAs a family, couple or individual, choose something that you can give up for this season between February 14 and Easter Sunday (April 4). It is preferable to choose something that costs money that you can “sacrifice” for this season (or longer) and then give that money, which would have been spent, back to the Lord. We highly encourage this to be in addition to any regular giving to the Genethe General Fund or Missions Faith Promise Giving.

What are some ideas of things to give up?• Cable or satellite TV• Gardening service• Pool cleaning service• Newspaper subscription•• Magazine subscription• Netflix or Blockbuster movie service subscriptions• Coffee• Reduce amount of money you spend on food by 50% or more• Soda•• A vacation or level of accommodations on next vacation• Reduce a significant purchase you are planning to make• Go to the library instead of buying books•• Commit to only going “window shopping” and buy nothing during this season• Eating lunch out. Go brown bag for the season• Vacation close to home. Save the flight money•• Manicures/Pedicures• House Cleaning service

Individual families have had the opportunity to purchase a Treasure Box for themselves as a way to stretch their grocery budgets, while other families have reached out to others by giving a Treasure Box as a gift to friends and co-workers. The Preschool staff and familfamilies are very thankful for the Treasure Box Ministry, as it has given us the ability to help others in a way we could not on our own.” “Calvary and Treasure Box has been a great blessing to us. I have been disabled for nearly 18 months, with SDI paying the first 12 months, then school tuition for the 3 kids, ... you get the picture! So in other words, Thanks Much!” - Clint

“I j“I just wanted to write in and tell you how the Treasure Box program has been helping me, help my mom. My mom lives in Hemet and unfortunately I do not make it there very often. She is on a fixed income – and like most, the end of the month is very tough. With the Treasure Box program, I am able to order a box online, which she can pick up near her house. So even thoeven though I am not there, I can be sure she has food the last part of the month.” – Paula

TREASURE BOXTESTIMONIALS

TREASURE BOXMINISTRYTo meet the needs of many in our Church and community who are feeling the economic crunch, Calvary Church, in partnership with Good Source Solutions, launched the Treasure Box Ministry in July of 2009. Treasure Box frozen food box ministry distributes boxes of groceries valued at $75 for an affordable cost of $30. The boxes are available for pepersonal use or to donate to a family in need in the Church or community. In the first six months of the program we, as a Church, distributed 800+ boxes of frozen food totaling 20,000 pounds!

More importantly, the Treasure Box Ministry is bringing God’s love and hope to people, both within Calvary Church and out in our local community. “Mary” came to a Treasure Box distribution day to pick up a box donated by a friend who attends Calvary and works with her. She was moved to tears at the generosity of her co-worker. Mary, though a Christian, is struggling to lelet go of her past. She is currently working and going to school, and is overwhelmed. The Treasure Box prayer team lovingly shared scriptures with Mary and prayed she would have the strength to surrender to the Lord's will. She kept saying she knew she wasn’t living right and that she wanted to 'come back to church.’ The next week, Mary showed up to look into Calvary preschool andand check out the church. This is just one of the many stories of people we have had the honor of meeting over these first six months of Treasure Box!

The Treasure Box Ministry is made possible by a team of faithful volunteers led by Jerry and Ann Bennett. Could you or someone you know use a Treasure Box? Are you interested in joining the Treasure Box distribution team? Volunteers are needed on distribution days (9 am to noon) to help with set-up and to distribute the boxes. Contact Jerry or Ann at [email protected] or go online to calvarylife.org/treasurebox and become part of this ministry.

Together, we played lots of games (Uno, Foosball, air hockey), learned more about God, had great discussions in cabin time, and developed some awesome friendships. Great relationships formed between campers and leaders. For many of our campers, this was their first camp experience. Each one just blossomed from being at camp and learning about God's unconditional love.”

In November, CCS (Calvary Christian School)'s Student Council sponsored a collection to help Camp Pendleton Marines. Chaplain Stephen Brown, a long time friend of CCS, and 800 of his fellow Marines were deployed to Afghanistan. He requested that we send care packages to lift the spirits of those who so bravely protect our freedom. CCS students and parents donated enough socks, jerky, candy, and other items to fill nearly 50 boxes. The most important box was filled with hundreds of letters written by CCS students. In those letters, the students shashared verses of encouragement and love as well as boldly proclaiming their faith in Jesus Christ. The Lord also provided enough donations, willing parents, and staff to mail the boxes before Thanksgiving break, so that they could arrive in time for Christmas.

Calvary Christian School participates yearly in the Operation Christmas Child project (a ministry of Samaritan’s Purse) which encourages all students to fill a shoebox with items like: toys, candy, socks, art supplies, and basically anything that might bring joy to a needy child receiving the box. The boxes are taken to the Orange County Processing Center where they are checked, sorted, crated and shipped to needy children around the world as Christmas gifts.

JJunior High students attending Calvary Christian School volunteer yearly to go with the Bible department teacher to the processing center to serve in the preparation of these boxes. This helps to fulfill one of the purposes of our school which is to model the love of our Savior Jesus Christ by serving others.

Matthew 25:40 Jesus told his disciples: “…I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.”

TThe Junior High Bible teacher for Calvary Christian Schools is Regina Benson. This year she took her 8th grade students to the Operation Christmas Child warehouse on Saturday, December 5. She has been taking students to this outreach for the past seven years to encourage them to reach out and help kids in need, and to serve by preparing the boxes for shipping.

Calvary Christian Preschool, a ministry of Calvary Church Santa Ana, held their second annual Heart for Hunger Food drive for the Orange County Rescue Mission. The goal of providing food for those in need also gave them the opportunity to begin developing a world view for their students.

TThey encouraged their parents to help their children be an active part of this event. Some of our parents provided little jobs for their children to earn money, and then took them to the store to purchase food with their own money. One of these students was so happy that she joyfully described all that she had bought to her teacher.

All the staff was blessed to have this opportunity to teach their young students the joy of serving the Lord as they shared with others.

““Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2

Suddenly the phone rang and it was the imprisoned father of the two children. He asked to speak with me and I encouraged him to seek the Lord and he told me he was happy to hear the news about the family accepting Jesus. He thanked me and asked me to invite his family to church which I surely did. I was so happy that ththese families got to see the true meaning of Christmas and although they are separated from family physically they are spiritually connected together through Jesus. I would like to thank God first and Tom from Calvary Church for giving me this opportunity to serve my Lord and Savior.”

–Maria Sanchez, Church Attendee

“In my delivery, the children were present and were very enthusiastic and overwhelmed to receive the gifts on behalf of their father. In my process of delivering the gifts I had the chance to tell the Mother and Grandmother about how God is the only solution to all our problems. I told them I didn’t know what was going on, but whatever is happening God already knows and has a solution! I read John 3:16 and mentioned that God loves them and asked them "If you died today where would you go?" They were sure they wanted to go to heaven, so I told them the only way to go to heaven is accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior! I prayed with them and they accepted JeJesus Christ as Lord and Savior! They started to cry tears of joy.

Last winter, Calvary Church participated with Prison Fellowship’s Angel Tree ministry to bring Christmas gifts to children who have a Mom or a Dad currently in Prison. God worked in mighty ways and the results were incredible!

IIn August of 2009, volunteers from Prison Fellowship including Calvary’s own Paul Balius, went into State Prisons and gathered information from inmates on children’s names and ages, location and what they might want for Christmas. This information was collected and in October, a database of children from Garden Grove, Tustin, Orange, Anaheim and Santa Ana was sent to Calvary’s Volunteer coordinator, Marlene Eckhert. In November, a Christmas Tree was placed in the lobby of Calvary’s Worship Center and gift tags were made available for people in our Church to pick up so they could sponsor a child. The tags were gone in two SundSundays! The people of Calvary stepped up big time to demonstrate God’s love to kids living with the emotional pain and financial hardships of having a parent locked away long-term in prison.

Next came the delivery process. The first wave of gifts was distributed at our 2nd annual Angel Tree Lunch and Gift Party on December 12th. Led by a brand new attendee to Calvary Church, Jessica Miller, the party was a huge success. There was a lunch catered by the Victor brothers from our Church. There was a story time with Pastor Dave, a craft and game time led by Calvary’s Children’s ministry and a Gospel presentation by Pastor Matt Doan. Calvary Christian Elementary School Principal Julie Trujillo helped lead the gift distribution at the end of the lunch and Chuck Ball took family photos of each child and caregiver. The second wave of gift didistribution, led by Tom Robb, took place the week after the party. Angel Tree gifts that had been purchased and wrapped by Calvary members were delivered personally to homes throughout Orange County.

Overall, we as a Church were able to demonstrate God’s love through 250 Christmas presents to 125 different children. To God be the glory!
