The Department of Health said that between 2011-12 and 2013-

14, the total number of days of delayed transfers rose by 2.9 per

cent, but over the same period hospital admissions grew by about

3.5 per cent. In that time the delayed days attributable to social

care fell by 13.6 per cent.

The Government has given an extra £37m to local authorities to

tackle delayed discharges from hospitals to the social care system,

and has set up a new national “Helping People Home” team to

provide support to local areas in reducing delayed transfers.

As the demands on the care systems increase, maintaining the

service which gives clients independence and quality of life can

seem like an impossible juggle.

Time and resources are a huge factor in the implimentation

of effective care. Providing an effective package of care that

speeds up the rehabilitaion process benefits all involved.

The Helping Hand Company’s decades of experience in

providing cutting edge pressure management, class leading

moving and handling and the creation the country’s favourite

ADL tool selection, has been brought together to provide a

24/7 care system which delivers improved outcomes for all:

client, care team and trust.

The ‘heart’ of the package are two profoundly effective,

beneficial technologies and an unrivalled service and

commitment. Including practical training and education

of the most up-to-date clinical findings. A combination that

over-delivers on every level: Class leading rehabilitation,

improved client independence, a more knowledgeable care

team and substantial mid to long term cost savings.

Margret was confined to her bed

and due to her pressure sores, was unable to

sit out for any period of time

Clinical testimony (Margret’s Therapist)

As an occupational therapist I am often seeing

patients who are seated in chairs which do not

fit their needs and do not need provision of a

new chair, simply a modification to their

existing, often well loved, chair.

Margret refused to get out of bed as she found her armchair

so uncomfortable.

She was at risk of pressure damage after healing from a

grade 2 sore, she did not move position and did not like sleeping

on a pressure mattress as it made her overheat.

We requested an assessment by Helping Hand company, the

representative was very knowledge about her products and had

an excellent manner with the patient. A thorough assessment was

conducted and Margret now uses the Posturite system prescribed.

She can now sit in her favourite chair every day, and feels well

supported and extremely comfortable. She is now reading and

engaging in other activities that she could not do from bed.

The nurses are happy that her pressure areas are well under control

and the patient has been discharged from Occupational Therapy

after finding such a great solution.

SYSTEM

With every increasing demand on services faced

by the NHS and an ageing population, reablement

offers long term sustainable solution, guaranteed

to deliver savings and real benefits to clients and

their carers: encouraging active involvement in

delivery of care, maintain level of independence,

empowerment of managing own care. Combining

the Cricket and the Posturite has increased

flexibility and reduced level of care required in

many different setting.

Day long supportMany of our clients have conditions that

do not allow them to stand for great

lengths of time but as humans this is how

our body’s function best. Supporting the

upper body helps our internal organs and

muscles to function such as swallowing,

breathing, healthy digestion. Fitted into

many different types of chairs, the Posturite

delivers support, comfort and reduces the

risk of sliding out/falls.

Comfort is KingHumans are endotherms – meaning

we can thermoregulate. However, an

inability to maintain a healthy skin

temperature can lead to discomfort and

significant skin concerns. Build up of

moisture increases the risk of infection

and skin damage. Check out our patented

Supportinghome reablement

The Cricket enables one member of staff to transfer/toilet a person rather than two. This enables a quicker response to a transfer need and frees the second member of staff to deal with another person maximising efficiency. In a domestic situation it could be used by a family member to transfer and assist a person with very brief familiarisation and training, avoiding waiting or possibly need for as many home care visits.

Also in a domestic situation with only a single person operation planning and connecting on time for a joint visit can be avoided or reduced depending on other care needs.

Additional items such as a transport chair or wheelchair are not required so reducing the amount of space taken by equipment plus the additional cost of said equipment and its cleaning, delivery, collection and maintenance.

Overall investment in appropriate and suitable equipment can in a very short time recoup the initial expenditure and commence to bring in efficiency savings with reduced staffing and care costs.

I hope this will encourage hospitals, care homes and Community Equipment Stores to invest in this as core stock. Funding for suitable equipment will overall help to reduce costs in staffing and care agency use following the initial investment.

Posturite adapts seating to manage changing needs.

SYSTEM

AdaptableEasy to custom fit into a wide range of seating. From wheelchairs

to well loved home chairs. Encourages and supports getting out

of bed. Sit out comfortably and safely with peace of mind.

To cover the range of service users and understanding clients

seating needs can change over time, there are four levels of

support to choose from:

Combined approach to the management

and prevention of pressure soresPressure creates stability, but sustained over long periods of

time, pressure can lead to pain and discomfort. We understand

the need to change our sitting position – for those who can’t,

the Posturite system is more efficient at managing pressure

distribution over a larger area

The way the back is supported, dictates the stability of the upper

body and overall balance – as we get older our ability to balance

deteriorates. Feeling safe and secure when seated leads to

increased comfort and time seated – active and resting.

Excessive moisture and relative humidity has a huge impact on

skin strength – at 30˚C the stratum corneum is 75% stronger

than it is at 35˚C, increasing the risk of skin damage at higher

temperatures.

Case studies

Jan 15 - Bradford 2 clients

HB young client living at home with neurological metabolic conditions Jo living in residential care; Congenital hydrocephalus, Osteoporosis, Cerebellar ataxia, Decompression of cervical spinal cord and fusion.

AHP worked with: Specialist PTCurrent equipment prescribed: HB Hoist; Jo Hoist and Rota stand

“Better transfer from bed, chair. Particularly well supported with the visual cues of the Footplates. Previous transferring client felt very insecure and lacked confidence”

The cricket is a useful rehabilitation tool to maintain and encourage standing and ensuring that the stand service user do are functional which for those who have cognitive difficulties in important as this increases compliance. Both clients improved with their stand and lower limb strength to the point with Jo now trying standing transfers without specialist equipment and is using a dynamic walker to mobilise with.

Nov 13 - Staffordshire

62 yr old gentleman living at

home, CVA 10 years ago, right side

severally affected.

“I find the Cricket to be an

excellent assessment tool to

decide what the client can

achieve. On many occasions it

works but the assessment with

this equipment also helps me

to decide if a more supportive

stand aid would benefit the

client more dependent on if they

can support themselves from a

sit to stand transfer”

The Cricket is more compact therefore more

practical in the home environment Very

useful as this can be used as a full transfer

aid between rooms not just transferring from

one seat to another.

One carer can use easily saves the cost

of having two carers or as in this case the

relative could manage alone.

At weekends we run on skeleton staff and to

train our patients on ‘sit to stand’, in the past we

have used a zimmer frame, secured with carers

foot to keep it from moving, and worked hands

on with the patient. The Cricket eliminates all

this and allows for a much safer exercise.

Nicci, Band 7 OT Neurosciences: We are using the Cricket for clients with a range of medical conditions incl COPD, Arthritis, Stroke, Brain injury, Spinal Injury, Oncology, Trauma and OrthopaedicsThe Cricket can mean the difference between full hoisting with multiple carers or being able to transfer

with the assistance of one. Opportunity to practice sit to stand outside of traditional therapy sessions. E.g. when going to the toilet.Promote a more normalised situation when washing/dressing

(through sit to stand) rather than having a ‘bed bath’Particularly manoeuvrable between rooms and within confined spaces of a ward bathroom or when we have used it within the home, it is compact enough for use within small properties. The main advantage is that – due to the castor mechanism - it is able to turn within it’s own space and does not require a large circumference to so.Yes, the cricket requires some training but is so easy to use and maintain.Enabled carers within the home environment between ‘care calls’ to assist the patient with toileting or other needs. In some situations even negating care package, giving the patient and their carer/family the opportunity to undertake caring full time independently Reduction in carer burden both within the hospital environment and the community setting.Enabled the rehabilitation process and has influenced earlier

patient discharge in many instancesPromotes ongoing maintenance and rehabilitation of a patients functional status through the patient participation in the use of the aid.

‘Invest to save’ is the strongest argument to support reablement for the NHS today.

“It is not enough for a nation merely to have added new years to life – our objective must also be to add new life to those years”

President John F Kennedy, Feb 21, 1963

We have a rapidly growing elderly

population, however less than 4% live in

communal settings (Age Concern England

2008) – the majority of us live in our own

home and we want to stay there. Whilst many

carry out their daily activities with little effort or

difficulty, for some, this can become a challenge.

Simple adaptations can be empowering for

families, carers and seniors; help

to maintain freedom & function to live freely and safely

independently, and support staying at home.
