2016 Renewable Energy Regatta Sponsored by UpGrade Athens County
Date: September 17th, 2016 during Ohio Pawpaw Festival Time: 12pm – 5pm Location: Lake Snowden Event and Registration Information: www.upgradeathens.org/2016renewableenergyregatta Registration Deadline: August 19th, 2016
OBJECTIVE Design, build and operate a boat that uses nothing but solar, wind, and/or muscle power in any desired combination. Build for speed, endurance and maneuverability using no combustion engines or energy storage on board. Teams are encouraged to apply, but individuals also welcome. Compete in one or more challenges: v Slalom Race $1500 Cash Prize
Ø Boats will prove maneuverability by navigating through a specified obstacle course defined by a series of buoys without striking any buoys or crashing. Fastest boat through the course is the winner, based on point system: #people on board x 100 / minutes to navigate course = point total. Team with highest point total wins the competition. Two boats will compete at a time.
v Speed Race $1000 Cash Prize Ø Boats race from dead stop over a measured distance. Boats will compete in tandem. For each
heat, the boat to cross the finish line in the shortest time wins that heat. Heat winners compete until fastest boat wins by process of elimination.
v Remote-‐controlled Race $500 Cash Prize Ø Enter a solar or wind powered remote-‐controlled watercraft in a slalom race. Boats will
prove maneuverability by navigating through a specified obstacle course defined by a series of buoys without striking any buoys or crashing. Fastest boat through the course is the winner, based on point system: boat weight x 100/minutes to navigate course = point total. Boat with highest point total wins the competition.
DEFINITION OF WATERCRAFT For Slalom and Speed Race: Any buoyant vessel that is propelled using any combination of solar (on board transducers – PV panels), wind (turbine technology, kite or sail), or muscle power (human strength). No limit on number of persons aboard vessel. No energy storage allowed on board (ie batteries) excepting muscle. Participants may either custom build a watercraft from scratch or modify an existing vessel. The watercraft profile must be no longer than 20 feet and no wider than 8 ft. A minimum of one person and a maximum of six must be on board each boat during all portions of the slalom and speed races. For Remote-‐Controlled Boat Race: Any buoyant vessel that is propelled using any combination of solar (on board transducers – PV panels) or wind (turbine) power. No persons allowed on vessel. Battery storage allowed to power remote only (on and off boat), on-‐board battery (can ONLY be used for communication). There are no specifications for size of watercraft. Remote-‐controlled boats may be custom built, commercially made or modified. OPEN SOURCE POLICY In the spirit of learning, all participants are encouraged to share ideas and information with fellow participants. UpGrade Athens County will enter a watercraft that is open source and will host several
pre-‐event gatherings for participants to meet and discuss ideas. A web-‐based chat forum will also be set up to encourage discussion and skill-‐sharing. ELIGBILTY Participants of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to enter the competition, no prerequisites to apply. Teams are encouraged to apply, but individuals also welcome. Watercrafts must be registered prior to the event in order to compete. Deadline for registering: August 19th, 2016. BOAT SAFETY UpGrade Athens County will perform a full safety inspection on each boat just prior to the actual race. All boats must pass the safety inspection in order to be allowed to race. Floatation maybe accomplished with an air bladder, foam or other manufactures suggested method. All boat drivers, navigators or alternate drivers must be able to swim. Life jackets are required for all participants. LIABILITY All participants must sign a Release of Liability form prior to participating in the competition. Participants enter the competition at their own risk; UpGrade Athens County and Ohio Pawpaw Festival are not responsible for damages to participants or to watercraft. AWARDS Cash awards will be provided to winning competitors at an awards ceremony Saturday evening. In the event that a team wins one or more races, one cash prize will be awarded to the team captain for distribution among team members.
