On an average day, the morning peak (07:30-
09:30) and the afternoon peak (17:30-19:30)
accounts for most of the train line activities.
The packed cabins and platforms presents a
dierent sense of public space. People try to
be at ease in this spontaneous and intimate
distances, escape into various anti-social
behaviour, such as napping, texting and
listening to music.

we were warned at the very beginning, a project in this scale requires a dierent kind of
thinking...decisions of demolitions should be done if necessary, but wisely.

URBAN DISCONNECTION:
Old Stuttgart Main Station
URBAN CONNECTOR:
New Stuttgart Main Station
The old station track cuts o the connection o the city centre, sacricing
pedestrian fow between the two sides. The main road in ront o the stationlies on a wiped-out plaza, rendering the station an island.
The new proposal creates a public space in place o the original track to re-integrate the urban abric.
It also acilitates connection across the road, bringing the station and the Kings Street pedestrianzone together. The new design ser ves as the meeting point between the old city and the new
development.

Serving the Virtual Communities
The current Redfern Station serves mainly for the students of the Sydney University, which had 47,775 students in
2009 and the Australian Technology Park with Channel 7 oce housing up to 2000 employees. Causing a huge
demand of transport during the peak hours. there is also an inux of new residents and workers set to result from
the Redfern- Waterloo urban renewal project.

Why a New Station?
The Current Redern Station is a trac
knot, caused by the confagration o
pedestrian, vehicular, cyclist and
commuter tracs. The troublesome situation is compelling
or a major change, with the considerati
o the uture expansion o both Sydney
University and Australian Technology Pa
in 2030.

Infrastructure should be a projection of the future, hence the expansion of both
Sydney Uni and ATP will be the major concern for the relocation of station.

The expansion of University of Sydney into the North Eveleigh site, the new master plan will
include education building, residential abundant greens pace and retail facilities; the ATP site is
also great potential for future development, which will induce a large demand of transportation,
exceeding the current situation.

The project consists o two bridge buildings linked by an openpedestrian bridge; each bridge contains its own program. The
frst bridge contains the train station and an accessible roo,
with gallery space and a nightclub, access via a ramp that is
open 24 hours beore and ater the train operates. The choice o program is a protest against the current time-
table system o train operation, and the mixing o activities
that have previously been perceived as incompatible. The
second bridge is the University Learning hub, containing small
collections o books and digital media, reading room, class-
rooms and lecture theatre, allowing both individual and
collective uses.
