Read, Write, Draw (RDW)

RDW is a suggested method of instructional delivery. Mathematicians and teachers suggest a simple process applicable to all grades. RDW is a four step problem-solving process that supports students through both visual and kinesthetic accommodations. The RDW strategy allows students to closely read and unpack the problem to develop a deeper understanding of the mathematical concepts.

• The more students participate in reasoning through problems with a systematic approach, the more they internalize those behaviors and thought processes.

• What do I see? • Can I draw something? • What conclusions can

I make from my drawing?

Solving a Problem Using RDW

Samantha is helping the teacher organize the pencils in her classroom for the teacher. She finds 41 yellow pencils and 29 blue pencils. She threw away 12 that were too short. How many pencils are left in all?

• Look through your Module and identify where the curriculum references RDW.

• How can you use RDW to support problem solving in places where your curriculum may not suggest it?
