1. OVERVIEW

REGIONAL DIPLOMA IN PSYCHIATRIC NURSING THE NEED FOR ONLINE PROGRAMS According to data compiled by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (2007), approximately 17.9% of the nursing workforce is situated in what is termed ‘rural and remote’ areas of Canada. The vast majority of these nurses are unwilling and/or unable to leave their local areas in order to engage in education programs. This demographic, educational ‘picture’ is self-evident if one examines the situation in British Columbia where, previously, the only pre-registration psychiatric nursing educational programs available were both in the Vancouver area. As an attempt to help remedy this untenable situation, in 2006, the Regional Online Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing offered by Stenberg College received approval to run its first cohort of students and this is the first and only such program in Canada. The program runs for 101 weeks, during which time students undertake 1080 hours of clinical practice (80 hours more than the stipulated requirement, CRPNBC, 2007) most often in their own local areas. Students also undertake 560 hours of psychiatric nursing theory courses (60 more than the stipulated requirement), 280 hours of general nursing theory courses (55 more than the stipulated requirement) and 180 hours of applied equivalents and/or related course hours (Stenberg College, 2007). However, what is unique about this program is that all the theory courses are delivered as online courses. Apart from a two day ‘Orientation’ at the beginning of the program, there is no ‘traditional’, face-to-face delivery of the theory courses. In April 2008, the program produced its first graduating class of 28 successful graduates. Each of these graduates sat their registration exams (in various regions around the province) and, we are delighted to report, achieved a 100% pass rate Furthermore, within 4 weeks of graduation, 96% are now registered psychiatric nurses and have already secured employment as nurses. Our second graduating class also had the same success with 100% of them passing the registration exam.

2. PSYCHIATRIC NURSING CAREERS IN CANADA Canada is going through a significant nursing shortage, which is all the more acute in psychiatric nursing. In British Columbia, there is a need for more Registered Psychiatric Nurses (RPN), particularly outside the urban areas of the province.

The workforce is aging – the average age of a Registered Psychiatric Nurse in BC is 47 years. The number of retirees from the profession is exceeding the number of graduates. Moreover, just over 90% of Registered Psychiatric Nurses live in urban areas of BC. At the same time as the concerns about the shortage of RPNs have been expressed, mental health services in the province have been reorganizing and are expanding (e.g. the merger of Addictions with Mental Health). This leads to a further need for psychiatric nurses, resulting in the vacancies we see today (Health Match BC, 2005).

As there are limited seats available in each cohort area, there is a preferential admission criteria in place to assist in the selection of the most qualified candidates. Preference is given to those candidates with volunteer or work experience in a health related field. To put this forward for consideration, you must submit written proof with confirmation of hours completed from the volunteer organization or employer. Students with post-secondary education in any field are also encouraged to put forward original transcripts of the highest credential completed for additional consideration. These must be original transcripts sent directly from the educational institute to us. All documents for evaluation for preferential admission should be submitted along with the rest of the application package. Once all of the above applicable information is submitted, applicants may require an individual interview. Upon successful completion of all the above, applications will be put forward for final selection for a seat in the following available intake. Frequently Asked Questions Is Stenberg College accredited? Yes, we are accredited by the PCTIA which is the Private Career Training Institutions Agency. Stenberg College was one of the first Private Colleges in BC to be accredited by the former PPSEC. Who gives you permission to run this program? The Regional Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing (RDPN) Program has been given unanimous Full Approval to run the program by the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of British Columbia. How long has Stenberg College been around? 19 years Where is Stenberg College based? We currently have a campus in Surrey, located in Greater Vancouver What is the difference between the Access Program and the Full Program? The Access program is offered to students who are currently LPN’s with the equivalent of 2 years full-time practice experience. The Full program is offered to students who do not meet the criteria for the Access program. The duration of the course is the same for both the Full and the Access Program; however, the theory course load, clinical rotations and course fees are lighter in the Access Program What are the prerequisites? The prerequisites for a mature student are: that you be 19 years of age or older, possess your English 12 with a minimum grade of a B, Biology 12 with a minimum grade of a C, and Math 10 or a Science 10 with a minimum grade of a C. High school graduates are required to have an overall C+ average, English 12 with a minimum grade of a B, Biology 12 with a minimum grade of a C, Math 10 with a minimum grade of C, and Science 10 with a minimum grade of a C. Do you have to be an RN to do the RDPN program? No you do not need to be an RN to do the RDPN program, although we welcome RNs who wish to apply to do this program How many students are you accepting into the program? There will be 8 students to 1 clinical instructor. The maximum number of students accepted per one start province-wide can vary from intake to intake. Do I have to arrange the Practical Experiences? All practical experiences will be arranged by Stenberg College and we have been given permission to use the regional health authorities’ facilities for this purpose. Which textbooks will I need? You will be provided a detailed list of which textbooks are required, and where they are available. It will be your responsibility to assure you have them prior to the start of each semester. Will I get a job after I have completed the program? The Province of BC is like the rest of Canada and the World. There is a shortage of RPN’s which is expected to increase further with 40% of RPNs in BC eligible to retire in the next five years. The immediate and long term prospects for employment are excellent; however we are not in any position to guarantee employment for graduates. Will you give me credits for other academic courses that I have already done? All requests for credits will be considered on an individual basis. You will have to provide evidence, so that we can do a prior learning assessment (PLA). As there is no charge for the PLA, there is also no discount in tuition either for any credits approved. Will I have any support locally to do this program? The faculty of the program will be available to support you through the program. Each online course has an individual instructor who will work with you. For each clinical rotation, a local clinical instructor is assigned to a cohort of no more than 8 students. Support from other RDPN students in your cohort is invaluable. Is the full RDPN program 23 and half months straight? The program is 101 weeks in length. At the end of each semester there is a one week break and between years one and two there is a two week break. Do RPNs get pensions and benefits? The majority of RPNs work for the Regional Health Authority, Provincial or Federal Government and so through their Union contracts have gained good pensions and benefits. Do RPNs get full time and permanent employment? The latest statistics from our graduating cohorts indicates that we had a 100% pass rate for the registration exam with the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of BC. Furthermore graduates who have been seeking employment have been employed in various capacities on completion of the program. What are the computer requirements? This is also complimented by 1080 hours of clinical practice (6 sessions of 180 hours each). Clinical hours are integrated throughout the semester. What are the clinical requirements? There are 6 clinical rotations and they are as follows:

• Semester Two - Instructor Led Psychiatric Nursing Care of the Older Adult (180 Hours)

• Semester Three - Instructor Led Acute Psychiatric Nursing (180 Hours)

• Semester Four - Instructor Led Medical / Surgical Nursing Clinical Practice (180 Hours) (Not for the Access Program)

• Semester Five - Preceptor Led Psychosocial Rehabilitation Psychiatric Nursing (180 Hours)

• Semester Six - Preceptor Led Substance Use / Misuse Psychiatric Nursing Clinical (180 Hours) Special Interest Area Psychiatric Nursing Clinical (180 Hours)

The shift pattern usually follows the rotation of either one 12-hour shift per week or two 8-hour shifts per week, for a total of 180 hours a semester. The exception is Semester Six where there are two preceptor-led clinicals to complete, which would be 30-40 hours per week over approximately a 12 week block to complete the required 360 hours in that semester. The days on which the shifts occur and the duration of the shifts are not under our control. We can advocate for what would best suit the student’s needs, however, often this is determined by the availability of the host site. What are the Online Requirements? This course is delivered on line, which means that you will require a computer, a connection to the internet and some computer skills. There are 6 Semesters, covering about 23.5 months. We anticipate that for you to complete the required online components this will initially take you about 25 to 30 hours per week, this time commitment may be reduced as you get more familiar with the content and mode of delivery of the course. This is not a part time course, it is a full time program. Can you work while taking the course? Yes, you can. With the theory component being online, there is a lot of flexibility for scheduling around your learning times. However, it is extremely difficult to work full time and juggle the clinical and online components of this course. Past students do report success with working part time or in casual positions and managing their clinical and online studies. How will I pay for my program? There are many ways of funding your education including: Student Loans, Service Canada funding, RRSP’s, Student Lines of Credit through your bank. Admission Process for the

Regional Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing (RDPN) Applicants for the RDPN program must complete the following:

Attend an information session via tele-conference Complete an application form Successfully complete the on-line entrance essay assignment Provide an up-to-date resume Provide 2 written professional references

If applying for the Full RDPN program, provide proof of the following pre-requisites:

For High School Graduates (under 19 yrs): Graduation from Grade 12 with C+ average English 12 (min Grade B*) Biology 12 (min Grade C) Math 10 (min Grade C) One other Science 10 (min Grade C)

For Mature Students (19 yrs+): English 12 (min Grade B*) Biology 12 (min Grade C) Math 10 or one other Science 10 (min Grade C)

* English requirements may be obtained by alternative means such as evidence of Post-Secondary studies at an equivalent level where English was the first language or completion of an acceptable English assessment equivalency test – LPI, TOEFL, IELTS or an ICES evaluation If applying for the RDPN for LPN’s Access program, provide proof of the following pre-requisites:

Copy of Licensing as a Practical Nurse Proof of the equivalent of two years full-time Work Experience as an LPN

As there are limited seats available in each cohort area, there is a preferential admission criteria in place to assist in the selection of the most qualified candidates. Preference is given to those candidates with volunteer or work experience in a health related field. To put this forward for consideration, you must submit written proof with confirmation of hours completed from the volunteer organization or employer. Students with post-secondary education in any field are also encouraged to put forward original transcripts of the highest credential completed for additional consideration. These must be original transcripts sent directly from the educational institute to us. All documents for evaluation for preferential admission should be submitted along with the rest of the application package. Once all of the above applicable information is submitted, applicants may require an individual interview. Upon successful completion of all the above, your application will be put forward for final selection for a seat in the next available intake. Applicants are encouraged to speak with our Financial Aid Advisor to start the funding process for viable options such as Student Loans. Once selected, you will receive an official letter of acceptance into the program. An Enrollment Agreement and all registration paperwork will be sent to you to secure a seat with payment of the registration fee. Additional requirements to be submitted prior to the program start:

Canadian Criminal Record Check within 3 months of the program start Medical Verification of Good Health within 3 months of the program start Current Immunization Status as required by the health authorities
