LG Eric Steinbach (Packers 2005 – 2014)

Steinbach: Ready to Rumble

There was little doubt that seven-time All-Pro Guard Eric Steinbach would be elected to the RDFL Hall of Fame when he retired, the only question was would it be unanimous?

As if being named All-Pro seven times, Steinbach is the leading run blocker in RDFL history, making 387 key run blocks in his career - nearly 100 more key run blocks than the second player on the all-time list. As well as being tremendously prolific in his run blocking, Steinbach was very efficient as well, recording a blocking percentage of 36.5 - the highest blocking efficiency of any offensive lineman with more than 60 career run blocks.

Steinbach was hardly a one dimensional run blocker however, allowing only 26 sacks over his ten year career and a remarkably low 0.5 Sack Percentage. With his unique combination of run and pass blocking, his seven All-Pro awards and his place atop the RDFL Leader Boards in blocking, Eric Steinbach heads into the Hall of Fame arguably the best offensive lineman of all-time.

DT Shaun Rogers(Titans 2005 – 2012, Redskins 2013 – 2014)

Rogers: They shall not pass!

"Reliable", "durable" and "dependable" are the words that first come to mind when you think of Shaun Rogers. During a career that spanned a decade, Rogers missed only five games - an average of 1/2 game a season. Amazing when you consider Rogers played the position that takes the most abuse on the football field, defensive tackle.

During his remarkable career Rogers recorded five or more sacks in a season seven times, posting two nine sack seasons and an 8 1/2 sack year. Rogers also hurried the passer over twenty times twice in his career, narrowly missing a third twenty hurry season, recording nineteen in 2005 and 2012. His career totals of 60.5 sacks and 157 hurries showed exactly what a unique player Rogers was, averaging 6 1/5 sacks and 15.7 hurries - a true pass rushing threat up the middle.

Rogers was an all-around threat on defense, making 563 tackles

7

Page 8: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

and 232 assists during his career, averaging 56.3 tackles and 23.2 assists during his hall of fame career. His best season was a year a defensive tackle can only dream about having. In 2007 with the Tennessee Titans, Rogers made 79 tackles and assisted on 38 others, recorded 9.5 sacks and 17 QB hurries while blocking 4 passes en route to his second All-Pro season.

Rogers would finish his career being named All-Pro five times - half the years he played in the RDFL! - and also won the league's strongest man contest twice. And to this day Rogers holds the Tennessee Titans' team records for sacks and QB hurries.

SS Edward Reed (Giants 2005 – 2014)

Reed: Hauls in yet another pick

Spending his entire career with the New York Football Giants, Ed Reed enters the Hall of Fame as the protoype of what a stong safety should be. Finishing with a Pass defense Percentage of better than 80 nine of his ten seasons, Reed also made 33 career interceptions and had a nose for the ball like a hawk.

Reed's hawkish awareness also led him to post seasons of 90 tackles or more seven times, narrowly missing an eight 90 tackle season with 89 in 2005. Reed's talents in both covering opposing receivers and seeking out ball carriers earned him six RDFL All-Pro selections during the span of his ten year career - ending his career on a high note in 2014 being selected 1st team All-Pro in the final season of a brilliant career. Reed stands atop almost every defensive leader board for the Giants and also finished his career second all-time in the RDFL in tackles, third in assists, and 8th in pass defense percentage. Ed Reed did it all.

9

Page 10: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

Reed - The Safety Instructions!

As the former GM of the Giants I was asked to write up my thoughts on Ed Reed.

First off, I think his induction into the Hall of Fame is not a surprise, but I’m very happy for him. He was the best player in the best secondary in the league.

While I ran the Giants, the team consistently had the best passing defense in the league and one of the better, if not the best, run defenses. While there was certainly top notch talent around him: Green, Gamble, and Taylor in the early years and Sacco got added later in his career, he was clearly the best player in the secondary.

Basically, he could do it all. He was involved in 129 tackles or more for 7 of the last 10 years. I still remember getting a message from a rival GM (I think Philly) saying that he knew what his team was missing: Ed Reed.

10

Page 11: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

He was one hell of a player that made the other players around him better. It’s unlikely that we’ll see a player of his calibre again.

I will say I was surprised to see him retire, since his quality of play had not declined in recent years. He still could’ve helped the Giants and my guess is that he’ll be sorely missed.

I’d like to say that I was smart enough to draft him, but the truth is I inherited him from the previous GM. However, I was smart enough to keep him no matter what. The guy could play special teams, stop the run, and defend the pass. What more could you ask for in a player? His induction into the Hall of Fame is well deserved.

Show Me the Money!

The top two free agents are a Center and QB and the kickers union will need to forgive us as we ignore two quality punters to look at a DT to round out the top 3 players available.

There are reasons why these three players are available despite their obvious qualities.

Center Grove will play his 12th season of professional football, QB Culpepper his 16th and DT Babineaux is the youngster of the trio as he starts his 11th season (ignoring the fact he is still recovering from a very serious elbow injury).

Center Jake Grove is the highest rated free agent available on the market and in his 10 seasons snapping the ball in Pittsburgh he has been man to rely on week in week out. In those 10 seasons he has missed 3 games, those back in 2008 due to a leg injury. His strength and pass protection technique has helped him to allow only 16 sacks in 5446 pass plays. His run blocking is not quite in the same mould but its still pretty good as he has recorded 246 KRB’s at a career average of 33.7%.

12

Page 13: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

His availability is not related to any fall in production here either as he has recorded 41.1% and 38.5% block percentages in the last two seasons, though no pancakes. Grove is a man who can play every down and will ensure the centre of the line is not where your QB needs to worry about pass rush breaking through.

QB Daunte Culpepper, this man has a championship ring, was voted All-League 1st Team Quarterback in 2006 and again in 2007, not to mention he was on the 2nd team in 2005. Add in the fact he is also a two time League MVP (2006 and 2007) and you realise that this is no your run of the mill garden variety QB, this is a top draw arm, with strong shoulders, this is quality street your Marks and Spencer QB. He has missed 7 games in his career; passed for 35,644 yards, thrown 243 TD passes and has a career rating of 92.9. He was the cog that turned the Saints into RDFL bowl champions in 2009 after coming over from Denver in a trade costing the Saints a 1st and 2nd round pick, how things have changed since those times. Culpepper is not a pick-up for the future, but he can do a job now, certainly for one season, maybe he sticks around for two. You have all heard of the NFL legend Favre, here is the RDFL version and he wants to throw the ball…

LDT Jonathan Babineaux has played in San Diego throughout his career as he has been the rock in the middle of the DL throughout the years. In 7 of his 10 seasons he played and started all 16 games. In 2013 he missed the last 3 games with a serious elbow injury and on his return he lasted 2 games before the same injury struck, so he comes with considerable risk. The one bright note is that after the 2009 season where he missed 14 games due to a knee injury he cam back strongly to play the next 61 games in a row.

13

Page 14: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

Babineaux excels against the run, making 479 solo tackles (196 assists) and has a bull rush that few lineman can handle helping him to recorded 28.5 sacks and 103 hurries in his career. The 2013 All-League 2nd Team Defensive Tackle could be a major asset to a team who needs someone to shore up the middle. The question is will he be the player he was after two serious elbow injuries back to back.

Falcons SwoopTrade Deal Shocks League

QB Vince Palmer

Out of the blue, a jaw dropping trade deal was struck between the Atlanta Falcons and the Dallas Cowboys which stunned RDFL watchers and has set the league chattering.

The Falcons swooped for All-Pro Cowboys QB Vince Palmer and it took the Commissioners office several hours to collate the full terms of the trade….there were that many draft picks going the other way!

15

Page 16: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

The full details of the deal were confirmed by both teams.Palmer joins the Falcons in return for:

Atlanta’s 2015 3rd / 5th/ 6th and 7th rd picksAtlanta’s 2016 1st / 2nd / 3rd / 4th / 5th / 6th and 7th rd picks.Atlanta’s 2017 1st / 2nd / 3rd / 4th / 5th / 6th and 7th rd picks.and the Falcons also send QB Robbie Reed and OT Everett Branch.

6yr veteran Palmer is an extremely talented QB who arguably still has his best years ahead of him. He has as good a shot as anyone at making the Hall of Fame in say 8yrs time. There is no doubt that his joining Atlanta immediately installs the Falcon’s as favorites to claim the NFC Conference title in 2015.

However, opinion is divided across the league as to whether this trade is a master stroke or a desperate roll of the dice. Here are the thoughts of a handful of RDFL GM’s:

“In this game there is a thought that a top QB and 2 top WR's makes you unbeatable - well I guess Atlanta are going to test that theory out. They have an amazing passing offense now as well as a quality RB in place. Reed or Finley were never going to lead them to the promised land so snagging a real top draw QB completed the trio.Dallas get a bucketful of draft picks so are set to build a real team over the next 3 years, the worry is they will not be able to replace Palmer and could look back to this trade as the point where their future bowl dreams died. Saying that the picks they have will allow them to trade up to get a really good QB and add lots of pieces around him. I think this in the end is a great deal for both. I know it would never be seen in the real NFL but all draft picks are worth a lot in RL here only the top 3 rounds usually provide real value...”

16

Page 17: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

“Like the rest of the league I was shocked when I saw the terms of this trade. Not just with the sheer scale of the deal but also at the fact that Dallas would let Palmer go!After the shock had passed, I’ve got to say I think the Falcons have taken a gamble (Palmer needs to stay clear of injury) but I think they have actually gotten great value for a very talented and still young QB. Personally, I think Dallas could have got more if they had shopped him around the league. This puts Atlanta up there as favourites for the Championship, although their short term gain will be at the expense of their ling term future.I’m not sure where it leaves Dallas as they will struggle to replace him.”

“At first look this seems excessive for what is a class quaterback. For Dallas it is a great deal they have a chance of securing a decent quaterback in this years draft and then can build a team with at least 5 top round picks over the next two years. I see all gain for Dallas. Looking at Atlanta a class QB for the two outstanding WRs is an obvious attraction, and away from the game it makes sense. However now I have looked at the Atlanta roster what else is there apart from a MLB? Atlanta will sting a few teams deep but unless they have a fantastic free agency then I think they are into a decade of obscurity.”

“From the Atlanta side, acquiring Palmer makes them the team to beat in the NFC in the short term - that offence (with Walters and Nakamura) is going to be scary good. The Falcons do have quite a few older players on their roster, though, and less opportunity to replace them with young guys, so I'm wondering if they're going to have problems three or four years down the line - it's all very well saying that you'll be able to fill the gaps through free agency, but free agents cost money, and there won't

17

Page 18: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

be much cap space around in Atlanta once their three big stars ask for new contracts... While the trade hurts Dallas in the short term, it also gives them a great opportunity to add a lot of young talent to their roster. While Reed isn't in Palmer's class, he's shown that he's a capable starter. It wouldn't come as a surprise to me to find that the Cowboys end up getting the better of this trade in the long run.”

“I actually like the trade for Atlanta/Bear! Not sure I'd have given up a young franchise QB for multiple draft picks in the, probably, X.30ish range? The 'Boys need to get QB Reed working in their offence and then draft well - 'no Mitchell Duggans’ for this to work for them. The Birds just need to win it all. Actually the same goes for Dallas, if this trade doesn't get you (closer to) a Bowl victory then it didn't work.”

Both the Dallas and Atlanta GM’s, Mike and Bear respectively, were gracious enough to allow RedZone an exclusive interview.

First up we talk to Mike, the Cowboys supremo.

Q: Which team initiated the Palmer trade, and if it was Atlanta who made the first contact, what was your initial reaction?

M: Atlanta made the first contact. I had not really considered trading Palmer, but the offer made me do a lot of thinking. We talked several times over the course of a week. I almost didn't do the deal, because I like Palmer so much, but in the end the picks weighed against my aging roster won out.

Q: How did Palmer react when he first heard that a trade might be in the offing?

18

Page 19: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

M: He was very surprised. I told him that I had not initiated the conversations and that we were not "looking" to trade him. I assured him that if a trade was made he would go to a team that would offer him a chance to win it all.

Q: Was it easy to agree terms or were the negotiations intense?

M: It took a week to come to terms. With us not being in a position where we had to make a deal, I wanted to get all I could.

Q: Were there any other teams involved in going after Palmer or did Atlanta insist on a degree of secrecy? Did Dallas consider shopping Palmer to the league as a whole? M: Atlanta was the only team that approached me. The offer was good enough that I didn't consider shopping or doing anything that might jeopardize it.

Q: This trade puts Dallas firmly in the rebuild mode. Can we expect to see several other players leaving the team in the near future?

M: I have placed some of my older players on the block. I expect interest to heat up after the first of the year.

Q: There has been strong reaction to the deal around the league. After a short period of reflection, do you feel either of the two teams has made a killing here or do you feel the trade terms are pretty fair to both franchises?

M: Palmer should be a Hall of Fame Quarterback. I believe we missed our shot 2 years ago when we had such a great season. If he continues to play at the same level he has, them I believe the trade to be fair. Atlanta was a receiving corps that should allow Palmer have even better numbers.

19

Page 20: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

Q: Of course, this trade involved two QB’s with Robbie Reed joining the Cowboys. Do you see Reed as someone to build the team around, or is he really more of a caretaker until another young star can be drafted?

M: Reed will come in and compete with our second year Quarterback Rob Voetberg. We would like to see a strong competition in the offseason. There is always the possibility of bringing in a veteran or a player from the draft.

Q: Do you feel that the Falcons now have to win a Championship to justify the trade?

M: You'd have to ask Bear.

Q: Cowboys fans may well follow your strategy, but will still no doubt feel unsettled at the prospect of losing their favourite player. Can you reassure the fans that you intend to stick around as GM throughout the period of team rebuilding?

M: One of the reasons I made the trade is because I plan to be around for a long time.

Thank you Mike for taking the time to talk to RedZone.

Later we caught up with Bear over in Atlanta, Georgia:

Q: The Palmer trade is a true blockbuster and one that has sent ripples throughout the league. Can you disclose how the trade came about and did the initial move come from Atlanta or Dallas?

20

Page 21: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

B: During the season I grew frustrated with Robbie Reed at quarterback despite his pretty gaudy passer rating. I didn't think he could take us from perennial playoff team to that next, championship level. We replaced him for three games with Scott Finley - who didn't exactly shine, though I suspect he's a bit better than he showed. Reed pretty much confirmed my worries with his poor performance against Green Bay in the playoffs. It was after that playoff game that I decided we needed to upgrade the quarterback position.

During this offseason we talked to seven or eight teams about a deal for a quarterback. Dallas had mentioned in a post or two that he was considering rebuilding, so we approached him about Vince Palmer about the same time we were discussing deals with other clubs.

Q: Were the negotiations protracted and how difficult was it to reach an agreement?

B: The deal probably took a week or so to finalize give or take a couple of days. I wouldn't say the negotiations were "difficult", but I do think we both realized we were making a major decision for the immediate and long term health of our franchises, so we were probably a bit more careful than we ordinarily would have been and that prolonged things.

Q: What was Palmer’s reaction when you first spoke to him about the trade?

B: Vince loved his time in Dallas but he's a Georgia boy coming home. He said he was very excited about joining his home team and about having Lawrence Nakamura and Dexter Walters as his primary targets. I think he's itching to report to camp.

21

Page 22: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

Q: How have the rest of the team responded to the news, and specifically receivers Walters and Nakamura?

B: Both Dex and Tora were ecstatic when they talked to Vince Palmer. They were already discussing new ideas for game planning and ways to take advantage of Vince's ability to get them the ball. Kenny Somerville and Ike Marquardt were also very pleased with the addition. I think Ken feels he's getting older and would like a ring or two before he retires.

Q: In your press release, you alluded to some other QB’s being considered as possible trade targets. Were the Falcons close to closing on any of those other potential deals and are you able to give our readers any clues as to which players were being considered?

B: We talked to about eight teams since the season ended. I'd say about three, perhaps four of those deals could have been done within a day or two if we hadn't made the deal for Palmer. We did have a similar deal to the Palmer deal for a somewhat similar player to Vince constructed, but were turned down.

As for specifics, I don't want to betray any confidences, so I won't mention any teams or players. But it was a certainty Robbie Reed would not be our quarterback for 2015.

Q: Atlanta have given up a lot to land their QB star. Would you agree that the Falcons now have to win the Championship to justify the deal and that no ring means the trade will be viewed as a failure?

B: Yes, in so far as the question goes. But we didn't make this deal to win one ring. We want to win the championship

22

Page 23: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

now and contend for the championship the next ten seasons. I mean so many other things go into it, but I'd certainly be disappointed if we didn't win a championship and compete for the next ten. I made this deal to compete for championships over the long haul, so if we don't win at least one it'll be a failure in my eyes.

Q: There have been reactions of shock and some incredulity across the league, whilst other GM’s have said this is a bold strategy which may prove a winning move. What is your reaction to some of the chatter around the RDFL?

B: I have so very rarely been at the center of controversy in any league I have ever played in, so I find it kind of amusing and fun, certainly different than anything I have ever experienced in playing FOF.

I think the deal I made after the 2011 season to move up to 1.2 and pick Lawrence Nakamura was arguably more of a risk for us than this deal is though. We were coming off a 7-9 season and traded 2012: 1.10, 2.14, our 2013: 1st rounder and 2014: 2nd rounder, we had finished under .500 and we were picking in the top ten with no guarantee we'd get better except self-confidence in what we were doing and confidence in how we were building the program - and we got considerably less value, a potential star wide receiver instead of an already proven, young, franchise quarterback.

But I do think this deal is so outside the box that it would have been unrealistic to not expect some level of shock and disapproval from some owners. Dealing away that many draft picks just isn't done in FOF circles.

No one has been rude or nasty or anything though. Given the people I have played with in the RDFL the past five seasons, I would be surprised if anyone were hostile like

23

Page 24: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

that.

So far the reaction has been fine.

Q: If Atlanta win 13 games a season now for the next couple of years (which I might add looks a distinct possibility), there is an argument that Palmer is well worth some late 1st and 2nd round picks plus a host of mid level and basement picks.

The draft value chart can be misleading, but if Atlanta project to be drafting at 28th for each of the next couple of seasons, the total value of your trade package might add up to around 2500pts…. You could argue that Palmer has been signed for the equivalent of the 1.1 or 1.2 selection. Not mega bucks when you look at 6yr vet Palmer’s talent and what he can do for a team over the next 6-8 yrs. With this arguement in mind, do you actually think Dallas could have gotten more for their star QB?

B: Wow, that's a difficult question. What's a young franchise quarterback who is going to give you eight to ten seasons worth? I doubt anyone would have given Dallas more volume in picks, but I could see a young, rebuilding team giving up three higher first round picks - maybe more - for a young franchise quarterback. But Mike is no dummy. It was ten or eleven days since he posted he was considering breaking up the Cowboys until we made the deal, undoubtably Mike made the deal he thought would bring him the most value. But only Mike knows for certain what kind of market was out there for him and who was willing to pay what.

24

Page 25: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

Q: As with most things, time will tell whether history looks back favourably on the trade. If Atlanta do miss out on a Championship, will you commit yourself to remaining as the Falcons GM?

B: It's rare that you get to design a club exactly to your own wishes. Taking over a 4-12 team five seasons ago gave me that opportunity - to build from the bottom up. Now that we've gone 12-4 and 13-3 the past two seasons and made trades for two star wide receivers and a franchise quarterback over the past four offseasons, I'd find it very difficult - maybe impossible - to walk away from what I've built here.

When you add in the facts that aside from the vNFL - which I run - the RDFL was the only league I was able to remain in when I was ill, the good, fun people here in the RDFL, and that the league is run by a really good guy in Marc and the hard work Rob and Paul put in when Marc needed help, I can't see any reason I'd leave the RDFL.

This is a terrific league, nice and slow paced and enjoyable. I don't ever see me leaving it.

Thanks also to Bear for his interview. One thing is for sure, we’re gonna enjoy watching how this mega deal pans out.

2015 Draft Class: Top 10 Prospects

#1: RB Dennis FLINT Colorado

Dennis Flint 5’08ft / 198lbs

Dennis Flint is the top rated talent in this years draft class. The elite running back out of Colorado just oozes class.Flint has wowed scouts at the combine with breath taking speed, impressive strength and fantastic smarts. He is the only player to have an 8+ adjusted bureau rating.Flint has good hands and a receiver’s wheels to go alongside his excellent running skills. This guy will be a dual threat in

26

Page 27: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

someone’s offense and it is no stretch to say he will someday be a league leader in yards from scrimmage.Whoever drafts this guy will get an instant offense a la Steve Jackson or Mike Newman.Although relatively small in stature, Flint looks to have the endurance to play all day and there don’t appear to be any gaps in his skill set. He has it all.He is easily no1 type talent and if the Raiders trade out of the top slot then I expect someone to take him first overall. If the draft order remains as is, Flint may drop a spot or two but he is a star waiting to shine. There’s no doubt about it, Flint is gonna create sparks.

27

Page 28: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

#2: QB Arnie MALONEY Louisiana Tech

Arnie Maloney 6’03ft / 230lbs

The Louisiana Tech star, Arnie Maloney, is the top rated passer in the class and as such is sure to attract a lot of attention.Maloney has the stature, a great football brain and has impressive intangibles. He struggles with the deep ball, but beneath the 30yd range he is a laser. At the Indianapolis scouting combine his scores were very good and had scouts writing furious notes. He may need a season or two to fully develop and he will need to learn fast if he is to cope with the more complex pro playbooks. He posted a great solecismic score and looks like a guy who will safeguard the ball well.

28

Page 29: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

Maloney is a very, very good QB prospect in a fairly light QB draft class and it is no surprise that his stock has risen and he is the consensus no2 choice behind Flint.Arguably, the top three picking teams may feel able to pass on Maloney but if Karp leaves Baltimore or the Raiders want to find Smith’s replacement, then this guy may just go in the top 3.He probably won’t slide past New Jersey at 1.4 and don’t discount a team moving up for him either.

29

Page 30: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

#3: DT Walter DANIELSArkansas State

Walter Daniels 6’02ft / 297lbs

Daniels is the highest rated defender in this draft and in a draft top heavy with defensive talent, that is no mean achievement.Arkansas State played a 4-3 front and Daniels is more at home as part of a duo in the middle where he can leave some of the run stopping chores to his oppo. Some scouts have a question mark over his run stuffing ability. However, there is no doubting Daniels comes alive in the pass rush. He is a beast of a rusher from the inside and he could even play DE if necessary. If a team wants to get pressure on the QB then Daniels does what it says on the tin and as a result he should be drafted highly.

30

Page 31: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

At the combines, his scores were almost off the chart for a DT and the scouts were drooling. The only downside is that he graduates in a class chock full of great D-line prospects and as a result he might drop a few slots although he is without doubt a top 5 talent.

31

Page 32: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

#4: DE Tyrell HEATH Louisville

Tyrell Heath 6’04ft / 284lbs

Louisville Cardinal’s DE Heath is the least developed of the top 5 prospects and will probably need a few seasons to mature. However, perversely he is the least volatile of the top 5 rookies and in the longer term he should be a monster.Like Daniels, Heath had an extremely impressive combine and he has all the skill set required for a modern pass rushing demon. He can use technique or strength to beat the OT and he is adept at run stopping too. His Solecismic test was not the greatest but the scouts think he knows football. The only real black mark he has is a slight tendancy to run out of steam late in the game.Certainly, Heath is a good fit for the Raiders and may go no1 if they keep the top pick. He has the talent to go first and there will be no shortage of teams ready to fall in love with him.Even if he slips past the Raiders, expect Heath to go top 4.

32

#5: CB Clarence ENGOklahoma State

Clarence Eng 5’10ft / 176lbs

Oklahoma State are a conveyor belt for talent these days with two of the top 10 prospects playing for the Cowboys.CB Eng is the top rated defensive back in the draft and playing at such an important position he will surely fly off the board.Eng is strong, super fast and is the most agile player in the whole class. He may be slightly smaller than the ideal, but he has all the necessary skills. He reads the game well and picks off his share of passes and can play any cover scheme well. Some scouts have him as the 5th best prospect due to a very high volatility score but there will be a team willing to risk it for such a talented corner. This guy has his roots in Nigeria and will become the first player of Nigerian descent to grace the RDFL.

33

Page 34: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

#6: DE Ray LYONAppalachian State

Ray Lyon 6’03ft / 255 lbs

Lyon continues the glut of quality D-linemen in the top 10 of this years draft class. He had a very nice combine and has impressed scouts with his run stuffing skills and ability to read a play.He may not be in quite the same class as Daniels and Heath, for one thing he seems too reliant on brute strength rather than technique to get at the passer, but Lyon is much more developed than the other DE’s and DT’s in the top 10 and he looks a ‘safe’ rookie. He projects to be a smart player capable of playing all day with a liking for stopping RB’s in their tracks. He might be better suited as a 3-4 DE where he can concentrate more on the run and let the WLB chase the QB.

34

Page 35: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

35

Page 36: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

#7: RB Thomas DeSPIRITOOklahoma State

Thomas DeSpirito 5’11ft / 221 lbs

The second Oklahoma State player in the top 10 is a bruising, well developed RB with an impressive ability to run right over defenders. He is a powerful inside runner with great endurance who just doesn’t get tired of taking the hits. He should be fitted with a cow catcher!DeSpirito posted very good combine scores across the board. Throw in some decent receiving skills and the Oklahoma Cowboy looks capable of becoming a real danger man in the pro game. The one question mark is a red flag over his character following rumours of substance abuse during his early college career. However, this guy will appeal to a franchise that wants to run the ball down your throat.

36

Page 37: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

If you like your RB’s with a Jim Brown mentality then DeSpirito’s your man.

37

Page 38: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

#8: DE Brad FULCHERKentucky

Brad Fulcher 6’01 ft / 248 lbs

And the top DE’s just keep on coming…The Kentucky Wildcat is another atheltic guy who wowed at the combines.Fulcher does have some disappointing skill sets and there’s no doubt he surprised some scouts with his scores at Indianapolis. The question is which is a truer reflection of his ability – combines or bars? Some scouts have also expressed reservations about his size and he may be more suited to LB in some systems. There is no doubt that lesser combine scores would have seen Brad stay rated towards the top 15 mark. Again, another guy that may suffer from seeing so many other quality D-linemen in his class. This and some lingering doubts may see him slide a little.

38

Page 39: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

#9: DE Will McCULLOCHNorthern Illinois

Will McCulloch 6’00 ft / 259 lbs

McCulloch is a very similar player to Fulcher. He has great athleticism and his combine scores were superhuman but question marks remain.First of all the Huskies star is not ideal size being short for an end and too bulky for LB. What is his best position?McCulloch is also very raw being only 15% developed and he is a long way from being pro ready.Scouts also rate his skill bars as mixed with play diagnosis and pass rush technique being questionable. Finally, McCulloch also has a red flag for character issues following an arrest for assault and battery two years ago.In a class full of top DE’s, McCulloch might be just too risky to spend a high pick on and with all these question marks I expect him to slide some.

39

Page 40: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

This young man still has a lot to prove before he can call himself a pro.

40

Page 41: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

#10: DT Jackie HAMMONDCentral Connecticut

Jackie Hammond 6’02 ft / 285 lbs

Our final top 10 prospect is Jackie Hammond out of Central Connecticut. The Blue Devils NT is a very well rounded player having nice skills across the board. He can play the run and gets his fair share of pressure in the pass rush too.He did show a propensity to tire late on in games and he will need to work on his fitness in the pros. His combines were very good and in a lesser class he would have been rated higher. Some of the combine warriors who we have talked about above, tended to take away the spotlight from Hammond. All in all, Hammond is a fine DT who will quietly get on with his job and should develop into a reliable every down defender.Any team needing a DT will be glad to draft Hammond and although he might drop to the middle of the round, he would represent great value there.

41

Page 42: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

Ukpatfan’s ‘What the Mock!’

Without further ado, straight into the first mock draft.

1.1 LA Raiders:QB Arnie MALONEY The Raiders have several options at 1.1.They will surely consider RB Dennis Flint, CB Clarence Eng is a possible and they will probably look at DT Daniels and DE Heath who are both excellent players.

42

Page 43: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

It’s not unlikely that they might even trade out if there is a team that really wants to go after Flint or Maloney themselves.Conversations with a team insider have convinced me that the franchise seriously considered drafting RB Dennis Flint and trading away Danny Faber. However, those trade negotiations seem to have come to nothing and it looks like Faber will stay, which gives a hint as to the Raider’s plans…..A certain Mr Davis is rumoured to be obsessed with Flint’s speed but the GM looks determined to stand up to his owner and draft his own man.The silver and black have 11yr vet Alex Smith at QB and he is a talented player in his own right. However, you don’t get the chance to grab a franchise standard quarterback very often and Maloney certainly fits that bill.I see LA making the smart choice and drafting Maloney to secure their future with a view to his having a season or two to learn from Smith. This would set them up at QB for the next 10-15 seasons and you can’t pass up that opportunity.

1.2 Denver Broncos: DE Tyrell HEATHThe Broncos are rebuilding and have many areas where they will want to upgrade. They are blessed with a shrewd GM who is used to patiently building a solid team. They will look extremely closely at RB Flint as they have a glaring need at this position, but Martin doesn’t favour drafting RB’s this high. He prefers to pick up backs in the 3rd or 4th round and groom them into starters. In a defensive class, they will look to bring in further defensive cornerstones on which to keep building their roster.CB Eng and DT Daniels will be tempting for the Broncos, but they plump for DE Heath.Heath looks to be a demon pass rusher and Martin has grabbed himself another important piece of the defensive puzzle.

43

Page 44: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

1.3 Baltimore Ravens: RB Dennis FLINTThe Ravens are another rebuilding franchise under skilful leadership. They have plenty of holes to fill and may look seriously at trading out of the 1.3 to pick up extra ammunition for their refit. However, if they stick they will examine all their options carefully. They will look hard at CB Eng and DT Daniels, and either would be a great pick up for Baltimore. However, I have a hunch that DaveT is unhappy with his present RB Derek Wolfe.Wolfe’s production dipped last year, he is unhappy and has shown a worrying tendency to fumble the ball.Throw in the fact that Flint looks an absolute superstar running back in the making, and the Ravens will snap him up and look to trade Wolfe away pre-season.

1.4 New Jersey Jets: CB Clarence ENGThe Jets were unlucky with injuries last year but the upside is they have themselves a nice high draft slot where they will grab a superstar. They would have been crossing their fingers, toes and anything else available – hoping that Arnie Maloney would drop to them at 1.4.However, I don’t see that happening and if the Jets don’t move up to grab him, then they will have to settle for a defensive stud instead.

44

Page 45: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

Either CB Eng or DT Daniels would be a great selection for New Jersey who have needs at both positions. In the end, I feel the Jets will see corner as their most pressing need and it’s difficult to pass on a shut down corner when he is available. Eng becomes a Jet.

1.5 Carolina Panthers: DT Walter DANIELSCarolina have the makings of a solid defensive front and were probably disappointed to see the draft class so loaded with DE’s and DT’s.They are unfortunate not to be drafting a couple of slots higher where they would get a shot at Flint or Maloney. However, DT Daniels is a great pick up even at 1.5 and he will satisfy the Panther’s fans even though a D-lineman is not a massive need.Daniels may remain at DT with half an eye on Mike Patterson’s looming retirement, or Markg may move him outside where Daniels looks to have the pass rushing skills to be a top grade QB killer for years to come. This is a perfect example of drafting BPA over need.

1.6 Tampa Bay Buccaneers: RB Thomas DeSPIRITOWith gaps on the D-line, Tampa may decide to pick up one of the talented DE’s or DT’s available but don’t forget the Buccs have another 1st round pick at 1.22.It is likely they will be able to grab a good D-lineman back there and that will give them options with the 1.6 pick. The team need a receiver badly and also none of their three QB’s look to be the future. As a result, the Buccs may closely examine WR Buddy Peterson and QB Gilbert Sinclair. However, are these two guys really 1.6 talent?

45

Page 46: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

Tampa are another franchise that is picking high in a class that doesn’t really suit them, but I think they are a team that may look long and hard at DeSpirito. They have a nice looking O-line taking shape and just need a strong running RB to give them one of the better rushing attacks in the league.DeSpirito looks better value at 1.6 than Peterson or Sinclair and he would be an immediate contributor behind that excellent line.

1.7 San Francisco 49ers: DT Jackie HAMMONDThe 49ers know QB Tom Brady can’t go on for ever. His production fell off last season and the 15yr vet enters the final year of his contract this coming season. It may be time to look for a replacement and despite missing the combine, QB Gilbert Sinclair will be looked at closely.Sinclair though represents a real throw of the dice and it’s risky to spend the 1.7 pick on such a guy. This roster has needs in lots of areas and there are several veteran stars coming to the end of their careers so it makes more sense to draft the best player available. With that in mind expect the 49ers to stick where the talent is and take one of the D-linemen. DT Hammond is probably the safest pick and would also upgrade their present two DT’s and inject some youth as Darnell Dockett enters his 12th year.

1.8 Chicago Bears:DE Ray LYONThe Bears have yet another new GM and it looks like Kailan wants to clear decks and put his own stamp on the roster as lots of players are up for trade.

46

Page 47: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

With a new GM, and one that is looking to make such widespread changes, it’s very difficult to read where the Bears might go. I really believe Chigago will try and trade down but if they are unable to you’ve got to believe Chicago will look for the best talent available. Their D-front does need help so I expect them to go after a DE here. Ray Lyon, Brad Fulcher or Will McCulloch look the most likely candidates and it depends on how much of a risk taker the GM is.Any one of them could go here but I’m gonna play it safe with such a high pick and have the Bears taking Lyon.

1.9 Tennessee Titans:OG Kelly GAYLORThe Titans are in a great position having the 1.9 and 1.11 picks and a couple of 2nd round slots too. That gives them several options to move up or down but let’s imagine they stick where they are.Tennessee have built a solid roster when it comes to the guys in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Their offensive and defensive lines are young and talented. If their GM wants to continue in this vein then he may look at OG Kelly Gaylor or a DT to really cap their linemen off.The Titans really need some talent at QB, RB or in the secondary but at this point in the draft that talent may not be there.QB Sinclair will again be mulled over but I don’t see Tennessee taking the risk.Everything points to them taking the conservative option and continuing to build from the lines.DT Kris Strickland or Joey Grier may be considered but despite it being unusual to take a guard in the top 10, I think Gaylor will become a Titan.

47

Page 48: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

1.10 Cleveland Browns:DE Brad FULCHERCleveland have some stars on their team but they also have some gaps to fill. They really need a RB and may not be convinced that any of their three QB’s are the answer long term. However, I see them being another team that isn’t willing to pull the trigger on Sinclair who continues to sit in the green room.In the absence of any RB talent here in the draft, I see the Browns turning to DE. They have a need at that position and there is decent talent on the board at 1.10.Fulcher or McCulloch may finally get drafted as the Browns look to improve their pass rush.Either of them would probably fit but Fulcher may be the safer option of the two.

1.11 Tennessee Titans:DT Kris STRICKLANDBack to the Titans who really face the same options as they did at 1.9.QB Sinclair may continue to tempt Darren but I don’t think he will want to risk such a high pick on a player who missed the combine and remains a quandary.Instead, Tennessee continue to build from the front and possibly reach a little for DT Kris Strickland who completes their defensive line.

1.12 New England Patriots:SS Chester WESTThe Patriots don’t need a QB and won’t look long at WR Peterson.RB Duran has been traded and the Patriots may be trying to move up the draft in order to have a shot at DeSpirito, or even

48

Page 49: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

put together a package to go after Flint, but I don’t think they will realistically get close to either.CB’s Baucus or Davison may interest them but there are a number of safeties in the class who may be more attractive to the New England GM and I think that is where he will turn.A run stopping SS would be high on the Pats shopping list and Chester West looks to be just that without the volatility risk of the other safeties.

1.13 Jacksonville Jaguars:WR Buddy PETERSONThe Jags have a nice roster taking shape and are close to being a playoff standard team.RB, CB and WR are the obvious chinks in the armor but with QB Aaron Rodgers on the team, the pass attack is paramount. He really needs another target or two to aim at and this slot seems set for Jacksonville to take the first receiver in 2015, Buddy Peterson.

1.14 Minnesota Vikings:DE Will McCULLOCHThe Vikes are much like the Jags in that they have a fine roster pulling together and are close to being the real deal. They too have a talented QB in Percy Ayodele who might be canvassing for better targets to aim at, and RB is also a need for Minnesota. However, taking a wideout or runner here may be too much of a reach so an alternative may be looked at.A safety is an option, as is an OT to replace an ageing Jordan Gross – Randy Tubbs will get an interview.

49

Page 50: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

However, the Vikes also need someone to pass rush opposite Toby Wynn and with DE McCulloch still on the board he may be too tempting a player to ignore. His combine scores will make him worth the risk here and he could be a steal at this slot.

1.15 Chicago Bears:CB Oliver BAUCUSThe Bears come to feed for a second time and if anything this choice is even harder to predict. One of the DE’s Ford, Greer or Brock may be selected but with CB being a need, it’s quite possible that Oliver Baucus will be heading to Illinois.

1.16 Kansas City Chiefs:SS Randall HAMILTONThe Chiefs are building solidly and look pretty strong in all areas of the roster.A high quality receiver wouldn’t go amiss and Allen Penn may get an extensive workout, but if the Chiefs decide they can make do with Beyer and co then they will look towards the secondary.I think they will select SS Randall Hamilton to replace an ageing Colin Branch and Josh Bullocks.

1.17 Baltimore Ravens:SE Allen PENNFollowing the Karp trade, the Ravens have a second pick in the first round. There are several areas of the team which might be reinforced here and any quality defender will be looked at closely. However, Dave is an experienced FOF GM and I see him looking at SE Penn.

50

Page 51: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

He looks like a quality player at this point in the draft and would also fill a need nicely as the Ravens only really decent wideout on the roster is Jorge Downs.

51

Page 52: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

1.18 Cincinnati Bengals:FS Darrin KEVORKIANThe Bengals have an ageing QB who has yet to produce and are crying out for a RB as Oren is out of contract. They also need help in the secondary. At this point in the draft, there are better options to pick up a DB and the Bengals select FS Kevorkian.

1.19 Arizona Cardinals:OT Randy TUBBSArizona have benefited from high draft picks for a number of years and selecting at this late stage will be a new experience for their GM.The Cardinals have some great young players but there are some areas which could still benefit from an upgrade.RB Stevely is on the decline and the Cards may look at Sinclair as a potential replacement for QB Ballard. However, O-line and DT are the more likely positions that Arizona will fill with this pick as there is simply not the backfield talent available here.OT’s Madison and Tubbs and DT Grier will all be considered and Tubbs looks decent value here.

1.20 New York Giants:FS Antonio RAMSEYThe Giants are putting together a roster with some good depth to it.They are probably in the market for a DE or help in the secondary, and they will likely take a defender over an offensive player. With that in mind, I see them looking at corner Antonio Davison and DE’s Greer and Ford, but the best fit could well be FS Antonio Ramsey.

52

Page 53: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

Present FS Sean Taylor is nearing the end of his career and there is no-one behind him. Ramsey represents better value than either of the ends.

1.21 Philadelphia Eagles:DE C.J GREERPhilly are a young team with a very solid foundation. They have talent building across the roster and at this point in the draft will be glad to see Greer available as he brings in talent at one of their few positions of real need.Greer should complement Strand nicely and Eagles fans will hope he can bring some needed pass rush from the edges.

1.22 Tampa Bay Buccaneers:QB Gilbert SINCLAIRAfter taking their franchise RB earlier in the round, Tampa will now look at their other pressing needs.DE Ford and Bock will be examined but QB and WR are the positions where they will be really desperate to get some quality onto the roster.SE’s Goodwin and Nakata may get a private workout in Tampa but with QB Sinclair still available, it might be that the Buccs think he is worth a shot relatively late in the 1st round.

1.23 Buffalo Bills:CB Antonio DAVISONBills QB Jason Campbell will be lobbying hard for a receiver to be taken early by the Bills but I think his argument will go unheeded in this round. The talent doesn’t appear to be there and the Bills will instead look at reinforcing at CB. Antonio Davison has flaws but he is well developed and should become a good pro corner for Buffalo and fills a big need.

53

Page 54: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

1.24 New England Patriots:DE Maurice BOCKThe Patriots take a second bite thanks to their trade with San Diego. Having allowed RB Duran and DE Clayton to leave, the Pats may look to replace one of those guys with this selection. There don’t look to be any backs worth taking here so DE Maurice Bock looks favorite.

1.25 Pittsburgh Steelers:OT Bryant MADDISONThe Steelers are looking pretty good and could make the AC North their own over the next couple of seasons.Another team that will look hard at the remaining running backs but with talent across the roster, the Steelers can afford to go with best player available. They will check out the DE’s and DB’s that are still on the board but it is OT Bryant Maddison that looks set to become a Steeler.

1.26 Indianapolis Colts:ILB Duane SHELTONThe Colts have one of the better rosters around with few gaps. They will cast an eye around for a receiver or a QB for the future but will settle on ILB Shelton who will be pencilled in to replace Philip Wright when he calls it a day.Shelton is one of the best players available this late on and looks a very nice pickup at this point in the draft.

54

Page 55: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

1.27 Dallas Cowboys:DT Joey GRIERNo other team has been as busy in the trade stakes as Dallas as they look to get their rebuild well and truly under way.The Cowboys got back into this years 1st round by sending a host of veteran players to Miami and there are plenty of gaps to fill now. With such a big re-tooling under way, the Cowboys will surely take the best guy around here. That would mean looking at DE’s Ford, Bock, DT Grier or even considering QB Dana Hughes.Safety first is probably the best policy and it would make sense to build from the trenches as Dallas snap up Grier.

1.28 Green Bay Packers:OT Mike TURNBULLThe Pack surprised a few people last season and look like they will be playoff standard for a while yet. They have the most pressing need on the offensive side of things and will check out QB’s, RB and O-line this draft class. This late in the first, it’s a good policy to take talent over need but fortunately for Green Bay, they can do both here.OT’s Turnbull and Paukschus should get interviewed and expect one of them to become a cheesehead.Possibly Turnbull shades it.

1.29 Detroit Lions:DE Eugene FORDThe Lions are an offensive dream with star talent at all the top spots. Maybe one more class receiver would complete the set.The flip side of all this offensive talent is that they lack some play makers on the defense.

55

Page 56: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

With no real WR talent kicking around at this point in the class, can we expect Steel to turn to the D? I think the answer is yes. Some of the linebackers might get a close look but it will be between Ford and Bock here.DE Eugene Ford has been patiently waiting in the green room and he finally gets his call.

1.30 Chicago Bears:OLB Stephen CRAIGUp again, the Bears like what they see at linebacker here and try out a couple of the likely rookies.WLB Stephen Craig has some real skills in abundance and with some fantastic combine scores Chicago are glad to take him this late in the first.

1.31 Denver Broncos:MLB Roman BLADESThe Broncos need a RB but Martin is good at spotting those guys later in the draft so he turns his attention elsewhere. There is a mini glut of decent linebackers at the tail end of the first round and MLB Roman Blades looks like a very nice selection here.Although slightly undersized, he has the skills and looked good in the combine.

1.32 Houston Texans:OT Larry PAUKSCHUSWhat an eventful year for the Texans, Real Bowl winners and then they lose their GM within hours of lifting the trophy. How will that effect their drafting? Well, I expect the franchise to play it safe and look at the best guy around which at this point looks like it could be OT Larry Paukschus.

56

Page 57: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

Coincidently, OT is an area of need so Houston will be happy to take the man mountain from Syracuse.

Hank Johnstone’s‘A Chip Off the Old Block’

Hi fans, Hank Johnston reporting again for RedZone publications.Once again it’s that time of the year when the young athletes of America, all muscle, speed and strength are paraded before us to be picked, selected if you will, by RDFL teams.Where they go is all in the lap of the gods.Do they want leave sunny California and go to Buffalo?I would guess not! - I sure wouldn`t! How you take in the draft is all up to you. Most fans get a few beers in and watch it on the telly horizontal on the sofa.Others watch it from a good sports bar with other draft nuts, yelling "Why the hell did we pick him!" as their team picks a WR with no speed or hands. The mad few get to be there in the room, in the bleachers at New York City Hall where the draft takes place. Decked out in

58

Page 59: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

their team’s jersey hoping for their team’s franchisesaviour to be unveiled.

I have, in my time, done all 3.......well 4 really.I was horizontal on the floor of the sports bar but that was like after drinking through the first 5 rounds and falling over.

This year it’s all different, the RDFL draft is going to be a more personal affair to me.As you may have deduced I like my drink (and my women) and it will not be a surprise to many of you I`m divorced.

I was young, so was she, she had a body to die for….I wanted to die in her every night! We married and life was great. Then the problems came along, and before long I knew my time was up with Mrs Johnston.

Well cutting a long story short, she tracked me down to ahotel and found me in a deep and meaningful conversation with a stunning blonde. A young sideline reporter who, with a little bit of help from yours truly, is not doing too bad for herself at all - Miss Charity Beaver.

So me and Miss Beaver had a couple of years of paradise and during that time we had a kid.It was the happiest day of my life. We named him Roy after the film actor Roy Rodgers (I`m a huge Western film fan).He was a big lad even then and now some 23 years later, I shall be with my son Roy Johnston in his house in FountainVally California watching the RDFL draft together. What’s so special about this you’re asking yourself?Let Hank explain to you.

59

Page 60: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

Roy was a big boy when he was born, and soon played football. He went to Stanford University and played in his senior year on the football team as a right tackle. He`s now entering the draft hoping to get picked and make his dreams come true.

Will he get selected? I hope so.His agent, Lonnie Cavin, thinks he may get drafted as high as the 3rd round.Where he goes I`m not really bothered. I know he`ll do himself and the family proud. After Roy`s been selected I`ll probably take the horizontal sofa position, with a glass of champagne in hand to toast my son, Roy Johnston RDFL Football Player…..I just hope he doesn’t end up in Cincinnati!

The Mel Ike Kipper Mock Draft – 2015

Its time to see if Mel Ike Kipper can regain his top pike hat after last years barfish brawl with that upstart prognosticator who is full of carp. The Kipper is going to be a climbing catfish who will be fighting with the cutlassfish to regain the title of top cod. It will be more difficult to dabble with the predictions this year due to the close ties with the Baltimore organisation. However, Mel is no sucker and has no intention of being a (summer) flounder on the way back to the top, so without any further delay here is the mock draft.

1. Los Angeles Raiders – RDT Walter Daniels The obvious player to take would be RB Flint as he is the best player in this draft. However having used an early 1st round pick last year on Faber (a more than useful back) then the Raiders may not want to spend this pick in that direction. QB Alex Smith had his best season last year for the Raiders and in his 11th

season there is no urgent requirement to draft Maloney, though he should be considered. Therefore Los Angeles will look at the defense, they have two good DE’s who are aging as well as a couple of good DT’s however there are two quality DL players available in DT Daniels and DE Heath. Heath is excellent but hasn’t got the greatest motor while Daniels may not be great against the run but has amazing pass rush skills so could be moved outside after being taken number 1.

61

Page 62: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

2. Denver Broncos – RB Dennis Flint The Broncos may decide to move down and pick up lots of draft picks, however as we have no mystic ball to see the future we will assume they keep the pick and find that there is no way Denver can pass on a RB like Flint, he may be the best player in the draft and at a position of need. Wolf can continue at QB for the future though the Broncos management will take a good look at QB Maloney. DE Heath will also be a major consideration, as they really need to add to the pass rush. The final option is to select CB Eng to play opposite Bernard However Flint may be the best RB ever so how can you pass on him when you have a chance.

3. Baltimore Ravens – LCB Clarence EngThe Ravens need a lot of help, they will consider QB Maloney as there are some doubts whether Greenham is the man to lead them in the future and Karp having gone to Chicago. The selection of DE Heath would provide a ready made replacement for Wiggins who is starting to fade while Baltimore need real help in the secondary so CB Eng will be considered. I am really not sure who the Ravens will select here, they will also consider WR Peterson to give Greenham more options but for now I will say that Greenham will be given more time and with Wiggins still on the roster that they go for the CB despite the high volatility.

4. New Jersey Jets – QB Arnie MaloneyDespite the fact that the Jets used a 1st round pick on QB Sutter last season they can’t get the card handed in quickly enough as they really need a top draw QB and Maloney fits the bill in every category. The only other player who would deserve consideration as a top 4 pick is DE Heath but with Spencer and Odegard on the roster this is not a major need in New Jersey at this time.

62

Page 63: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

5. Carolina Panthers – RDE Tyrell Heath The Panthers would have been hoping that Maloney would have dropped to them and with no major need at DE may look to move down in the draft. However Heath is much better than Guthrie and would ensure the Panthers had one of the best 1-2 DE pairings in the league. Guthrie could be traded for further picks or play as a backup so they keep hold of the pick. If Carolina do need help elsewhere it is in the secondary and it would be no surprise to see them select CB Oliver Baucus or one of the quality safeties available.

6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – SE Allen PennTampa will consider using one of their two 1st round picks on a QB, so will take a close look at Gilbert Sinclair (no combine) and Dana Hughes. They could do with a RB but DeSpirito has a red flag so despite his talent may be considered too much of a risk to select this early. DE Lyon and a few of the others to play opposite Harding will be of major interest to the Buccs, as will DT Hammond. However there is a major need to add quality WR’s and with the pick of all of them they have the choice of Peterson or Penn.

7. San Francisco 49ers– SE Buddy PetersonBrady is back for another season but it is rapidly reaching the time that a future QB is picked up so Sinclair and Hughes will be looked at in microscopic detail. The 49ers need help at WR and CB as well so CB Baucus and SE Peterson will both be considered. There are good DE’s still available but with Daniels and Robson already on the roster this is not a major need area. Dockett inside is again so Hammond could be the man to ensure the defensive line continues to be a major strength. I can see the 49ers giving Brady another target to see if his arm can produce magic one more time, though Hammond is the man they should select.

63

Page 64: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

8. Chicago Bears – LDT Jackie HammondThe Bears have already added QB Karp from Baltimore as their future signal caller and have 3 1st round picks this year. Chicago need a RB but will not risk this pick on De Spirito, they would have taken Penn or Peterson if they had fallen to this spot. They will look at DT Hammond and CB Baucus as well as a whole host of DE’s including Lyon, Ford and Greer. They will also take a close look at SS Randal Hamilton but it is on the DL where this pick will be used at the get the best inside man left on the board.

9. Tennessee Titans – SS Randal HamiltonThe Titans have two of the next three picks so will have a chance to secure a couple of really good players if they don’t try and use them to trade up into the top two to select Flint. Knowing they need a QB they will have a choice of Sinclair or Hughes. However they can probably wait until the 11th pick to grab one unless they have a real preference. There is no real need for a DE with Garner and Freeman on the roster, however the secondary could really use help so the Titans will look at CB Baucus and SS Hamilton. I think they will take Hamilton as he is quicker and consider whether to keep him at SS or move him to CB before training camp as he is the right size to make the move.

10. Cleveland Browns – RDE Brad FulcherThe Browns have a few choices, take CB Baucus or one of the plethora of DE’s as they have need of a 2nd CB and are struggling at DE. They could add a quality RB but again the best is a red flag risk. They are likely to go for a DE the question is which one, Lyon, Fulcher, McCulloch, Ford, Greer or Bock. Fulcher has the best combine numbers while Ford, Greer and Bock all have better pass rush bars. It will come down to interviews so it is anyone’s guess. General wisdom is that the combine numbers are better future indicators so they will go for Fulcher (he also is less volatile).

64

Page 65: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

11. Tennessee Titans – QB Dana HughesBack in Tennessee the Titans can now choose to take the QB or pick up the CB Baucus they considered with the 9th pick. The need for a QB is greater not knowing how much impact a non-combine appearance will have and how both of these players come out in the interview process it may be that Hughes is the safer bet. If the Titans are into taking a risk they may use this pick on RB DeSpirito.

12. New England Patriots – RDE Eugene FordNew England didn’t have too many holes and certainly not at DE however after sending Clayton to San Diego there is now a need at DE while they would like to improve at tackle and at safety. So look for SS West, FS Ramsey and FS Kevorkian to catch the Patriots eyes. They may consider QB Sinclair, as a gamble worth taking as there is little tackle quality in this draft. If they do go for the OL then RT’s Tubbs and Karamonos or LT Paukschus would be the names in the frame. DE wise there are still some quality ones available so they may look to replace Clayton here.

13. Jacksonville Jaguars – RCB Oliver Baucus The Jaguars want a WR so Goodwin will be considered for this pick, however they are aging on the OL as well and have need of a young guard so LG Gaylor will also attract a lot of interest in Jacksonville. Defensively there are needs at DE and CB. The DE’s on the roster are solid while the CB’s are really weak so with Baucus still available it is time he heard his name called.

14. Minnesota Vikings – SE Melvin GoodwinThere is a need for a RB so Calvert, Wagner and red flag DeSpirito will all be considered, the Vikings with Vogel’s injury will want to add to the receiving corp. so Goodwin will attract attention. LG Gaylor would be a solid pickup for the OL while they will consider a DE to play opposite Wynn in a 3-4 defense. DE’s Lyon, Ford and co will all be considered as will a look at

65

Page 66: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

the tackles available, but the attraction of the last decent WR in the draft may be too much.

15. Chicago Bears – RDE C J Greer The Bears won’t believe that they miss out on the 3rd WR having had two taken before their first pick. Having already added DT Hammond they will look at the whole host of DE’s including Lyon and Greer. They will consider RB again however I think the rebuild of the defense will continue to take precedence so they will also look at MLB’s Duane Shelton and Roman Blades. This is a tough one but they will hope that one of the LB’s are still available at pick 30 as they go for a DE. It will come down to combine and bars, McCulloch has the combine but a red flag, Lyon isn’t a great pass rusher so Greer could be the man.

16. Kansas City Chiefs – QB Gilbert Sinclair Kansas may well consider QB Sinclair if they feel Brewer is not the man to lead them while they will also take a close look at CB and safety for help. DE is not a major need so SS West will be considered along with FS Kevorkian however could it be that Sinclair is the QB to lead them back to playoff glory.

17. Baltimore Ravens – FS Antonio RamseyThis pick did belong to Chicago but was traded to Baltimore along with WR Kariger for QB Karp and 3.1. Baltimore having already taken a CB with the 3rd overall pick would have considered one of the QB’s if they had fallen. The Ravens will look at the safeties West, Ramsey and Kevorkian and then at the DE’s Lyon, and Bock. One other consideration will be LG Gaylor to protect QB Greenham in an area of weakness for the Ravens. It may be a defensive pick again.

18. Cincinnati Bengals –RB Thomas DeSpirito Cincinnati need a RB so will need to consider Calvert, Wagner and DeSpirito however they also have holes in the secondary as their best two players are aging and there is little depth. SS West

66

Page 67: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

is the best secondary player left on the draft board while FS Kevorkian is pretty good too. The Bengals will consider LG Gaylor as well so will have some decisions to make. The question is whether this is the GM who will take a chance on RB DeSpirito.

19. Arizona Cardinals – FL Desmond Hoffman The Cardinals had a good year last time so this is the latest they have drafted in some time. There is still a need at QB if Ballard is not the man to lead them in the future. However with little available they may leave picking up another QB to later in the draft. Arizona does need to add a WR to take the heat off Warhurst so Hoffman and Drew Mueller may be considered. They will consider a 2nd CB so Antonio Davison will draw attention. RB’s Calvert and Wagner may also be taken to replace Steveley however this may not be the top need at this time.

20. New York Giants – SS Chester WestThe Giants don’t have lots of needs, they would like to get younger at WR but the options aren’t great here. They may well decide to get TE Joel Green who looks like being one of the best in the game while LG Gaylor would certainly mean New York had a strong OL. There will be consideration of using this pick on a DE as Lake and Stone are not all that. However with Reed retiring there is a huge hole at safety and Chester West could fill that.

21. Philadelphia Eagles – RDE Maurice BockPhiladelphia would like to add a WR to the mix but I am not sure there is a player available worth this pick. They also need a DE and CB. There is value here so DE’s Lyon and Bock will both be looked at along with DT Strickland. At CB Davison and Schissleman will deserve consideration. Who will be selected is anyone’s call but as this is a prediction there needs to be a name here. Bock appears to have better bars despite being slower then Lyon.

67

Page 68: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

22. Tampa Bay Buccaneers –LDE Ray LyonHaving already taken a WR the DL will be looked at with obvious candidates in DE Lyon along with DT’s Strickland and Grier. QB is still an issue but there is no value here and there should be a decent one available in the 2nd round so it’s a DL player for this pick. Lyon excels against the run the question is could he adapt to a move inside? The Buccs look to find out.

23. Buffalo Bills – LT Larry PaukschusThe Bills still need help at tackle after the disaster of selecting Stone last year. They also need a long term replacement for DT Harris while the other area of concern is the secondary. RT Tubbs and LT Paukschus are certainly options as are the DT’s Strickland and Grier. They are better value than most secondary players left, though FS Kevorkian with excellent combine numbers would be a value pick here.

24. New England Patriots – FS Darrin KevorkianThis pick was traded from the Chargers to the Patriots as DE Broderick Clayton and RB Steve Duran were sent to San Diego in exchange for this pick, 2.28 and the Chargers 1st round pick next year. New England sorted out a new DE with their earlier pick but would like to improve at tackle and at safety. So look for FS Kevorkian to catch the Patriots eyes. They may consider LT Turnbull as well.

25. Pittsburgh Steelers – TE Joel GreenThe Steelers have few needs, though they could do with a TE and another tackle. Look for RT Tubbs and LT Turnbull both to be looked at closely. TE Joel Green would be difficult to pass on as he seems to have everything you could ask for. A CB or FS would be useful so FS Kevorkian will be considered here as well. Not sure they can pass on that TE.

68

Page 69: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

26. Indianapolis Colts – MLB Roman BladesIndianapolis have few needs so will look at the available DE’s to play opposite Bailey. The only other need would be at MLB where Shelton and Blades would be a major upgrade. Would the Colts franchise be prepared to gamble on DE McCulloch due to his red flag? Not sure. FS could be considered but those MLB’s look awfully good.

27. Dallas Cowboys – LT Mike TurnbullThis pick was Miami’s but was traded to Dallas along with the Fins 3rd and 5th picks this year and 2016 4th, 6th and 7th for DT Herrlich, WR Fitzgerald, FS Collins, CB Watkins and RT Roos. The Cowboys will be hoping that a decent QB like Sinclair or Hughes falls to them after trading away Palmer, however they are likely to be gone so Welker and Colford could be considered. As Dallas is in the process of a complete rebuild perhaps it is right to start on the lines. OL options are LG Gaylor will be seriously considered as will LT Turnbull and RT Tubbs. On the defensive side LDE Will McCulloch has lots of upside and in the middle Strickland would plug the gap left by Herrlich. Predicting this pick is truly a leap of faith as the Cowboys could use this pick in a multitude of areas.

28. Green Bay Packers – LG Kelly GaylorThe Packers need a RB to take the heat of QB England so Calvert and Wagner are major considerations. TE Quintero would be an option to give QB England another target. The Packers would also look at FS Kevorkian in a lot of detail as there is a need here as well. However Green Bay surely can’t pass on LG Gaylor to add some quality protection to the OL.

29. Detroit Lions – MLB Duane SheltonThe Lions need help all over the defense so will consider MLB Shelton, DT’s Kris Strickland and Joey Grier. However this is a franchise that may also decide to take a risk on DE McCulloch who has all the ability in the world. A safer pick would be Montez or CB Schisselman, choices, choices.

69

Page 70: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

30. Chicago Bears – WILB Cory CunninghamChicago having sorted out the DL see the top two MLB’s off the board they consider CB’s Schisselman and Davison as well as they really need help in the secondary. They could add another DT in Strickland or Grier as this would ensure they would have a top DL in the near future. However there is really a need to sort out the MLB spot so they take a shot on the third one who had a great combine as well…

31. Denver Broncos – RDT Kris StricklandHaving taken the RB with the 2nd overall pick the Broncos could help the OL with one of those more than decent tackles, however they will decide to help the defense so CB’s Schisselman and Davison are in consideration as are DE’s McCulloch and Montez. DT Strickland is also still on the board and would ensure the Broncos DL was quality in the middle. Maybe it is time to gamble? Not sure they will.

32. Houston Texans – LCB Antonio DavisonFresh off the Bowl win the Texans will be under new management. There are few holes in this roster though a 2nd quality tackle wouldn’t go amiss. However the secondary could also do with another CB and FS. So RT Tubbs will be considered. CB’s Schisselman and Davison are still available as well. SS Coffee may be considered but at this spot it is either a tackle or CB who are the value picks.

70

Page 71: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

Looking back at 10 years of the RDFL, there are some striking facts that stand out about the players drafted first each season.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, QB has been the most popular position with 4 having been selected. The class at this position has been very bright, with Justin Vance, Vince Palmer, Tyrus Garrison, and that other one.

The next most popular position is perhaps the most important protection for your QB – an Offensive Tackle. Three Tackles have figured as number 1 overall, with All-League Stars Emmanuel Everett of the Cardinals and Terrell Flannery of the Lions. Oh, and there was that other one.

DT Kris Maryland has the unbeatable distinction of being the first player ever selected. He enjoyed a successful start to his career in Minnesota, being voted All-League at the first attempt. If not for a serious injury that ruled out the whole of the 2008 season, who knows what other success could have come his way?

The other four players not named above sadly all fell foul of a curse.A curse much worse than any potential risks inherent from appearing on the cover of Hank Johnstone 2016 (the latest instalment of Electronic Con’s Football Videogame series). They have all suffered from not having agents that have taken care of them properly.

You see, they have all played for the St Louis Rams!!

2006, you’re RT Joseph McCracken drafted first by St Louis. You start all 16 games in your rookie season, block a little bit

71

Page 72: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

and the media consensus is you don’t give up too many sacks. Time to kick on and prove that you’re worth that big pick. Or to only start 21 more games in your entire career and retire seven years later, while not even being asked to appear on Dancing on the Stars.

Flanker Dean Dalvalle had a nice start after being the top pick the following year. He had six nice years as a Panther, started four playoff games and was an All-League reserve in 2009. Then what happened? Well the 2013 League’s Fastest Man should have legged it pronto when Carolina had an offer too good to be refused from St Louis. No more postseason for you Dean...

Perhaps the saddest tale is of the QB taken first in 2008. After an early career as a Falcon, Earnest Brewer found himself in St Louis. He even tried taking on a cheeky nickname to try and win the fans over. But ‘Ernie’ (must try harder nickname dept), will never be mentioned ahead of the other future hall of famers also selected first at his position (Messrs Vance, Palmer and Garrison). His agent finally saw some sense and got Mr Brewer out of dodge before his career drooped further. He has a chance of a rebuild in Kansas City, but many feel the damage from the curse is irreparable.

Which leads us on to the most recent inductee into the class of 1.1. DE Bernie Bridges had a respectable rookie year, but as the only Defensive End selected with the first pick, has a lot to do to eclipse the established superstars in his position. He’s not even likely to be remembered as the best defensive end with those initials in his division....

So agent Antoine Lamar has strict instruction from his future superstar client, RB Dennis Flint, who currently sits atop the charts in the mocks. Any phone calls on draft day that contain the words, “Are you ready to become a St Louis Ram?” will be met with the surprising news that he’s suddenly decided to play

72

Page 73: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

baseball instead...

With apologies to the Rams, and yes I know that Brewer’s droop was your gag….

73

Page 74: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

The Jock MockHere is another mock, compiled by on of our Scots GM’s:

1.1: Los Angeles take DE Tyrell Heath, LouisvilleWhile either QB Maloney or RB Flint are worthy of being the first overall pick, neither of these are need positions for the Raiders, with Smith and Faber already on the roster. Defensive end is a need, with current starters Hill and Marais getting up there in years, and Heath looks like a real impact player.

1.2: Denver take RB Dennis Flint, ColoradoThis isn't just going for the home-town boy, but adding a real playmaker to an offence that struggled to move the ball most of the time last season.

1.3: Baltimore take DT Walter Daniels, Arkansas StateAnother team that doesn't need a quarterback, with Greenham on the roster. A case could also be made for CB Eng, but that would be a bit more of a risk/reward pick - Daniels has a much

74

Page 75: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

higher floor than Eng.

1.4: New Jersey take QB Arnie Maloney, Louisiana TechIf the draft does play out this way, and Maloney is still on the board when the Jets go on the clock, the pick may well come down to how confident the Jets are in last year's first-round pick Richard Sutter. Corner (Eng) or receiver (Penn/Peterson) are possibilities if New Jersey keep faith in Sutter.

1.5: Carolina take CB Clarence Eng, Oklahoma StateA few options here - one of the receivers would make a lot of sense here, as this would take some of the pressure off Wilkerson. There's risk in going with Eng, but the Panthers need help at corner, and the talent level is high enough for it to be worth taking a chance.

1.6: Tampa Bay take SE Allen Penn, IndianaAgain, there are a few options for this pick - I think that going for a receiver offers best value, and that Penn is a safer pick than Peterson.

1.7: San Francisco take SE Buddy Peterson, MichiganThis pick may well indicate if the 49ers are trying to give Brady one more shot at adding to his collection of rings, or if they're heading into a rebuilding phase. Peterson is a bit of a risk, but would give a much-needed boost to a depleted receiving corps.

1.8: Chicago take CB Oliver Baucus, Mississippi StateAfter acquiring their QB by trading with Baltimore for Karp, the Bears should use at least one of their first-round picks on the defensive side of the ball. While there are plenty of defensive linemen higher on the board, Chicago have a bigger need at corner, and Baucus looks like an immediate starter with the potential to be a quality starter.

1.9: Tennessee take QB Gilbert Sinclair, Clemson

75

Page 76: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

Maybe a bit high, and there's always that additional element of risk in taking a no-combine guy - Tennessee need a quarterback to build around, though, and there's a pretty significant drop-off after Sinclair.

1.10: Cleveland take DE Brad Fulcher, KentuckyThere are other possibilities but DE appears to be the biggest need - Fulcher doesn't appear to be all that talented at this point in time, but a great combine performance suggest that he'll end up being much better in time.

1.11: Tennessee take SS Randal Hamilton, AlabamaHamilton appears to be a guy who should be able to move to cornerback without too many issues, and has the potential to be a high-end starter - a nice fit for the Titans, who don't have all that much talent in their cornerback group at the moment.

1.12: New England take FS Antonio Ramsay, North Carolina While there are needs at other positions that may be more pressing, Ramsay appears to offer best value for the Patriots at this point - safety isn't a high-profile position, but a player who can hit and cover with the best of them will make their defence better.

1.13: Jacksonville take LG Kelly Gaylor, TexasNot a high-profile pick, but one that would significantly strengthen a solid but aging offensive line - Gaylor appears to be the best lineman in the draft by some distance.

1.14: Minnesota take DE Eugene Ford, VirginiaThis appears to be a draft board that fits in reasonably well with the Vikings' needs - one of their main needs is defensive end, and this is a deep draft for DEs. While McCulloch is probably more talented, I'm not sure that the marginal difference to Ford is worth the extra risk.

76

Page 77: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

1.15: Chicago take DT Jackie Hammond, Central Connecticut Filling another hole on the defensive side of the ball - talented enough to contribute from day 1 with the potential to be a solid starter at the least, the only potential issue with Hammond is his conditioning.

1.16: Kansas City take MLB Roman Blades, MichiganIt's difficult to see how the Chiefs can best use this pick in this situation - ideally, this pick would be used to add a cornerback, but Eng and Baucus are long gone, and the second tier of CB prospects aren't worth taking this high. While KC are pretty solid at middle linebacker, Blades would be asked to move to the weak side.

1.17: Baltimore take SE Melvin Goodwin, WyomingTwo positions stand out as in need of attention when looking at the Baltimore roster - receiver and defensive tackle. There are decent prospects available at both positions, but I think that Goodwin offers better value than the defensive tackles available at this point (Strickland and Greer).

1.18: Cincinnati take SS Chester West, Evansville The Bengals need help at cornerback more than they need a safety, but there aren't any cornerbacks left on the board worth taking this high. Running back is also an option, but I don't see DeSpirito as a first-round pick. West would be an immediate starter, and has the potential to be one of the best safeties in the league.

1.19: Arizona take DE Will McCulloch, Northern IllinoisI don't see many holes in the Cardinals' roster, but adding a solid defensive end to play opposite Frieder would make a lot of sense. McCulloch is definitely a risk-reward player - comes into the league with a bit of a reputation, and his extremely good performance at the combine isn't in line with the scouts' opinions - but there's definitely a lot of upside there.

77

Page 78: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

1.20: New York take TE Joel Green, Illinois Possibly a little bit high for a tight end, but Green has enough raw talent to justify being taken at this point. He would step right in as a starter for the Giants, and has the potential to be one of the best in the league at his position.

1.21: Philadelphia take DE C.J. Greer, Columbia Good value at a need position is all you can ask for, and the Eagles would get that with this pick - it's likely that Greer would be picked earlier if this draft wasn't as strong at defensive end, and Philadelphia could use a solid starter to play opposite Strand.

1.22: Tampa Bay take Larry Paukschus, Syracuse This pick would be a receiver if there was one left on the board worth taking in the first round, but the three guys with first-round value are already gone. Paukschus is probably a little bit of a reach, particularly as he'll probably need a bit of time to develop, but is likely to be the best blind-side tackle in this draft.

1.23: Buffalo take RT Randy Tubbs, Maryland Looking at the Bills' roster, this pick should be used on a 'big ugly', either offensive or defensive - there's a big tackle-shaped hole on the right side of the offensive line, and NT Harris isn't going to be the lynchpin of that 3-4 defence for ever. There are decent options for both positions, but I think that Tubbs is a better fit than the best of the DTs still on the board.

1.24: San Diego take MLB Duane Shelton, Northwestern *If things work out like this, I suspect that this will be a very easy pick for the Chargers - there's talent in their linebacking corps, but most of it comes from two aging veterans. Shelton is good enough to go much earlier than this, but there are very few teams in the middle part of the round that need a linebacker over the other players on the board.

78

Page 79: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

1.25: Pittsburgh take DE Ray Lyon, Appalachian StateA nice fit for the Steelers, as it gives them a solid player to fit in opposite Ferguson. Lyon won't offer much in the way of pass-rush (which is why I suspect that he'll drop a little bit in this draft), but does everything else well.

1.26: Indianapolis take DE Maurice Bock, Alabama The Colts are strong defensively, but have struggled to replace Spencer at RDE (traded for the pick used to acquire J.B. Willis in 2013). Bock would be a significant upgrade over one-dimensional pass-rusher Wynn, and would take some of the attention off Bailey on the other side.

1.27: Dallas take DT Joey Grier, Baylor As a team at the start of a major rebuilding operation, the Cowboys should be more concerned about adding talent to their roster rather than addressing a need position - Grier is talented enough to have been taken higher, and would give Dallas a pair of young defensive tackles whose skills mesh together very nicely.

1.28: Green Bay take FS Darrin Kevorkian, Iowa A little bit of a risk here, as the scouts don't have a particularly good opinion of Kevorkian at this point, but his combine performance suggests that there's potential for improvement, and the Packers could use a quality safety to complement their talented cornerbacks.

1.29: Detroit take LG Dwight Polk, Pittsburgh It seems to me that there are two ways that the Lions can go with this pick - strengthen the offensive line, to give Newman more chances to make plays, or add some much-needed talent on the defensive side of the ball. While there are options defensively (DT Strickland and MLB Cunningham), I think that Polk is better value here, even though it's using the pick to build the strength of the team (the offence) rather than address a

79

Page 80: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

weakness.

1.30: Chicago take MLB Cory Cunningham, California Even though the two earlier Bears' picks were both defensive players, Cunningham looks like a guy who'll be at the centre of their defence on every down.

1.31: Denver take FL Desmond Hoffman, Alabama The Broncos' receiving corps last year was Czurlyo and a few replacement-level players - Hoffman would provide a fairly significant upgrade over the likes of Autry, Greer and Bopp.

1.32: Houston take SS Dennis Reese, Miami (FL) Not many holes on the roster, as you would expect from the defending champions, but the draft board doesn't fit the obvious hole to fill (cornerback). The Texans could use an upgrade at safety, too - Reese looks like a good candidate for that position, and may be able to move to cornerback...

2013 & 2014 Draft Reviews

2013 Draft Top Ten Review:

1.1 Terrell FLANNERY – Left Tackle / Rutgers DETROIT 96/96 Flannery is perhaps the best pound for pound footballer in the RDFL today, at left tackle his 1st job is to protect the blind side of the Quarterback and there is just no one in football today who does it quite as well as Flannery, in fact perhaps no one has ever done it better than Flannery, high praise indeed you may say. Many will know that the Offensive Linemen take maybe the longest time to develop so when you consider Flannery has become the best in the business ever in just two years your realise just how good he is. In those two he has given up just 10 sacks in over 1000 passing plays which helped him to the pro Bowl as a rookie, surprisingly he missed out last year though. He’s big strong and plays the run almost as well as the pass, forget getting around him on your own as he normally manages to block two guys let alone just the one. In Detroit he has become a legend already which is even more amazing as he says all he wants to do in football is play for the Bears the team he

81

Page 82: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

has followed all his life. Flannery expects nothing less than a divisional title and at least a NFC Championship game this year and with the offense the Lions have and Flannery protecting Quarterbacks Jaeger back that is a distinct possibility. Rating 8.5 out of 10 Career Highlights: 70 Key run blocks- 41.7 blocking % and 18.6 O%

1.2 Jimmy MUGHELLI – Cornerback / Texas A&M CLEVELAND 89/89 Many feel Mughelli was a very shrewd pick by the Browns management as all the noises coming out of Cleveland suggested they would take Warhurst or Willis the Wideouts but due to the depth at the Receiver position they took Mughelli and used there 1.13 to get Ellis Garnes. Very simply put this decision has paid of massively for the Browns as most feel he is the best Cornerback in the RDFL today. He does everything very well, be it playing zone, man or up close at the line which he loves to do. Mughelli’s never shy in front of the media and recently announced he may play Wideout as well next season, when pushed on the statement Mughelli replied “I’m not just prime time I’m show time as well baby”. Who can argue with those words as he has shut down some of the leagues best receivers in his short career and lets be honest without the Browns poor decision to play him while no fully recovered from his clavicle injury he received playing the Texans in 2013 he would have been even more productive for the Browns. He even managed to score the Franchise’s first Touchdown on a Kick Return as well, what more really could the Browns ask for? Rating 8 out of 10 Career Highlights: 6 Ints - 18 defended passes and a PD% of 80.1

1.3 Deron WARHURST –Wide Reciever / North Carolina ARIZONA 79/79 Who’s Larry Fitzgerald, anyone remember that guy, they are just some of the statements coming out of Arizona since Deron

82

Page 83: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

Warhurst was drafted in the class of 2013. Of course they don’t mean any disrespect to Larry but it just shows how much they think of Warhurst in the desert. For 5 disastrous years the Cardinals have been crying out for a star to get them to the nirvana of .500 season and Warhurst was the guy who took them there last year with an amazing 67 of his 76 receptions going for 1st downs including 12 touchdowns, 3 of those 12 in a memorable game against Divisional rivals the 49’ers. Why is Warhurst so good, well he just has amazing feet that seem to get him exactly where he needs to be time after time to catch the ball, when asked why he has these feet Warhurst simple, when I was kid in Mountain View I used to dance to the sound of the DJ whenever I could, so I have dancing feet. Warhurst had a 16.55 yard average last year when he made a reception and gained almost a 3rd of his yards once he had the ball safely in his hands. Coach Fabini said you just can’t tech that kind of production that just comes naturally. Even so Warhurst ahs developed into a start in next to no time and Fabini is expecting even more of him this year and has targeted him to gain at least 85 receptions and 1300 yards. If he does this could Arizona be returning to the playoffs at long last? Rating 7 out of 10 Career Highlights: 125 Receptions for 1808 yards and 17 TD’s

1.4 Jason FOSTER – Half Back – Mississippi – PHILADELPHIA 67/72 If I could pick one of the top 10 picks of 2013 I think Foster would perhaps be that guy as there’s nothing like watching a Half Back grinding out the yards. At 5-11 and 225lbs Foster is built to run and very powerful and just loves to run Linebackers over as we saw time and time again last year. Once tackled he also uses that massive lower body strength to keep his legs turning which gains him etc yards as well. But he’s not all about raw power he is unbelievably quick to the outside and once in the open field he can be devastating. There is no doubt that the word on every Defensive Coordinators lips when they speak about Foster is containment, we must contain Foster, the trouble is not many have done so. Foster is also an excellent receiver

83

Page 84: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

coming out of the backfield catching 56 balls last year. He also is a very safe carrier of the ball fumbling just 7 times in his 1st two years from nearly 600 touches. Last year Foster gained 1800 yards from scrimmage and 18 Touchdowns and all this even though he is still learning his trade as a half Back, WOW. Foster seems to be dragging the Eagles up from the below average team there where in 2013 (5-11) to the winning team there where last year (9-7) and in 2015 I think the Eagles will be a force to be reckoned with Foster breaking 2000 yards from scrimmage which will certainly make them a playoff team. If foster breaks that 2000 yard barrier there will be no doubt he’ll be the best back in the RDFL. If The Eagles use any of there draft picks to strengthen the Offensive Line then that 2000 yards I think will be a certainty. Rating 9 out of 10 Career Highlights: 2060 yards rushing at 4.17ypc and 21 Td’s -83 Receptions 668 yards 4 TD’s

1.5 Christian HARDING - Wide Receiver / Arizona State LOS ANGELES 67/67 Many people feel that a Receiver is not a star RDFL Receiver until he has had that much talked about break out game and boy did Harding have a break out game last year against the Patriots catching a massive 17 passes to equal Jake Blakes RDFL record. After arriving from Arizona State Harding has taken little time in becoming not only the Raiders No1 Receiver but also Alex Smith go to guy. The Raiders legacy demands blazing speed at the Wideout position and Harding certainly delivers that and much more. He gives them there 1st real deep threat since Doug Gabriel in his prime which helps stretch the field for the Raiders as well as giving them a chance to got the distance from anywhere on the field. Defenses just have to play deep zones when they face him or risk the home run on every play. His route running is precise and he seems to have that knack of being the open guy on 3rd downs when Quarterback Alex Smith needs to find an open guy to keep the drive alive. Harding has had two very solid yards with 60 plus catches in both of his

84

Page 85: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

season since being drafted, that not sound like eye watering statistics but when you consider the Raiders have gone 8-24 in that time those starts sure start to look good. As the Raiders get better as they surely will so will Harding and expect a 100 catches from him in the next season or two. Rating 7 out of 10 Career Highlights: 127 receptions for 1699 yards and 12 TD’s

1.6 Kyle BUCKNER – Defensive End / Bentley MIAMI 81/81 The Dolphins are very excited about Kyle Buckner this year and who can blame them, in all honesty the Dolphins are just as excited about having four 1st Round Defensive Linemen up front which is why they made the move from a 3-4 to 4-3 late last season. Buckner is clearly the star of the four as he oozes class in every department. First and for most he is there to get pressure and he has both the raw speed and power to go inside or out to beat his man and get to the Quarterback. He reads the game well, plays the run very well and has the endurance to keep going deep into the 4th quarter when a lot of games are obviously decided. Buckner will need to step up this year, he had limited playing time in his rookie year due to the existing quality of the Dolphins line and did OK last year without really reaching the dizzy heights he should be reaching. The move to 4-3 though should really be a big springboard for success for him, Coach Swan said “the move from 3-4 to 4-3 should help Kyle show us more of his pass rushing skills, last year it was the run skills we saw. We’re going to let him roam free this year and go after the quarterback, he should have fun and we’re expecting great things.” So this reporter feels this could be a big year for Buckner and a pivotal year for him, will he becomes a star or will he become just a starter, over to you Kyle it’s decision time! Rating 7.5 out of 10 Career Highlights: 4.5 sacks – 14 hurries – 6 QB knockdowns - 44 tackles

1.7 Sammie STOKES – Quarterback / Oklahoma St LOUIS 56/66 The future of the Rams was the quote that the Rams General Manager used for Stokes and that statement certainly looks likely to be correct as the ex Sooners Quarterback started to come into his own last year after a not so good Rookie Year. Stokes was perhaps the main reason the Rams turned a terrible 1-15 season in 2013 in to a competent 8-8 last year helping the team to 5 consecutive victories at the end of last season which means expectations will be high in St Louis for at least a winning season if not a playoff birth in what looks like being a open NFC West this year. Stokes has developed well and seems to be able to hit all ranges of passes which gives the Rams Offensive Coordinator Kyle Shields plenty to work with in the passing for the upcoming season. Two areas Stokes may need to work on are his ability to avoid the pass rush and maybe make more of stud Wide Receiver Dean Delville. In summary the Rams are clearly moving in the right direction after last years massive improvement and that is perhaps due tot the fact they have found a Franchise Quarterback at last. Rating 7.5 out of 10 Career Highlights: 421 of 654 for 4257 yards 20tds 15ints 83.4 QB rating

1.8 B.J MacCLELLAND – Cornerback / Bucknell MINNESOTA 81/81 The second Cornerback taken in the top ten of the class of 2013 and with that in mind you have to compare him with Jimmy Mughelli. On paper Mughelli is the better player there is no doubt about that but it’s performances that count and so far there has been not that much of a difference between the two players although Mughelli maybe has the edge. So what about MacClelland, what does he bring, well he certainly is great in all the coverages with perhaps man and bump being his better disciplines. He has terrific speed and can stay with any Wide Receiver in the RDFL today, this has enabled the Vikings

86

Page 87: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

management to let him play man coverage a lot of the time although maybe he has been lit up once to often, but lets remember he is a young mad still learning his trade. When you think of Cornerbacks you don’t immediately think of great tackling but MacClelland certainly brings that to the Vikings which has been a great addition to the team. The last but still very important skill set he brings to the team is his Kick returning skills, he’s right up there already with the best in the league and we have a sneaky suspicion in 2015 he may take one or two all the way to the end zone, RDFL you have been warned. Rating 6.5 out of 10 Career Highlights: 3 Ints- 22 defended –PD% of 76.9

1.9 Troy FITZGERALD – Linebacker / New Hampshire NEW ENGLAND 66/66 Troy is a inside Linebacker and in a 3-4 the SILB is primarily a run stopper, so if I said to you take this Rookie put him in from to start from opening day and after two years he’ll have 185 tackles and 68 assists to his name I think you’d be biting my hand off.. Well that’s what Troy Fitzgerald has done and he’s not only done that he’s done it with some style. What makes those stats even better is the fact that the Patriots have had two mediocre seasons at best over the past 2 years. Troy is small for an inside guy and many felt SLB would be his position especially with the combined run and pass rushing technique skills he has, maybe that move may come later who knows. For the moment though he plays SILB and from the center of the field Fitzgerald uses his wonderful vision to help hunt down Half Backs with an animal like instinct, before pouncing on them and hitting them like a 10 ton truck at 40mph. Defensive Coordinator Phil Irving recently said the following of Fitzgerald “he sets an example from the opening play and the rest of the Defense follows that, he’s a no nonsense, no thrills kind of guy who just plays great uncomplicated football, maybe a bit of a throw back you may say, but how ever you describe him he is one hell of a football player”. Enough said, right?

1.10 Deion HAYES Wide Receiver – San Jose State – GREEN BAY 78/78 I don’t think any Head Coach would have expected a guy taken at 1.10 to make an amazing 176 receptions in his first two years in the RDFL, with 90 yes 90 coming in his rookie year. Even if Vince Palmer was a Packer you’d still think this was outside of the realms of fantasy. But look again and you will see Hayes did delivery all those receptions in the pass happy RFL in his 1st two years. So do with have another Jerry rice or Steve Largent on our hands, I’d say so. Hayes runs almost the perfect pass route and just seems to get open at exactly the right time to make the catch, he seems to be an even better receiver when it gets to 3rd down and owners will pay big bucks to get that kind of skill on the roster. Add those skills to ability to find wide open lanes on the field after the catch and Hayes is a nightmare for any Defense no matter how good. He’s pretty fast as you’d expect from a guy this good although maybe the short passing game is his better discipline, in saying that if you where a Cornerback in the RDFL you’d be looking for safety help when it comes to covering him. Hayes does has his faults though as he can be known to drop the odd ball which can and has proved costly, but he’s a young guy so you can expect with the right coaching that will be ironed out of his game, at the end of the day it comes down to concentration which he will most likely gain with experience. So was this a good pick for the Pakers, no it was a great pick and without question Hayes will be a main reason while the Pakcers will be challenging for years to come. 2014 Draft Top Ten Review:

1. St Louis Rams – RDE Bernie Bridges.Bernie hasn’t been the player the Rams thought they were getting with the first overall pick as he has struggled to produce a decent pass rush. However in the 3-4 defense that is run in St Louis the RDE is more of a tackle then pure end and it is in this role where ‘B.B. Gun’ excels with his 100 rating in run defense. In his rookie season Bridges played and started 13 games recording 34 tackles, 21 assists, 2.5 sacks, 1 blocked pass and 12 hurries. Add two forced fumbles and the currently rated 70/70 DE can be credited with helping the Rams turn from 1-15 to 8-8.

2. Carolina Panthers – FL Jorge WilkersonThe Panthers grabbed the pass catcher from Virginia with the 2nd

overall pick last season in hope he would be able to help turn around the Carolina franchise. Jorge has started well in his role catching 65 passes for 889 yards and 4 TD’s. He did drop 5 passes, but that is to be expected especially from a rookie. He wasn’t as explosive as hoped only recording one 100-yard receiving day and fumbled 3 times, but he did contribute 13

89

Page 90: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

catches of over 20 yards including a long of 35. His punt returns were disappointing as returned 25 for a 5.6yard average. His current rating of 78/78 makes him the 3rd highest rated player from the draft class. His impact hasn’t helped the Panthers too much as they still had a disappointing season.

3. Kansas City Chiefs –RB Britt PrideOffensive rookie of the year, other than average endurance has all the skills to be a top back in this league. In his rookie season he rushed for 1146 yards (4.28 avg.) and 5 TD’s. Add in 53 catches for a further 300 yards and 4 TD’s and you can see he was a dual threat. He dropped 3 of the 70 passes thrown his way and fumbled a further 3 times but nothing too much to worry about. As the 2nd rated RB in the league (behind Newman) with a 70/70 rating Pride looks like being a top draw back for a number of years as the Chiefs try to build another winning team.

4. Arizona Cardinals –CB Reuben PrestonLooking back it appears that the Cardinals took the wrong CB as Preston despite being a good CB is not a great one. When you look at Bernard taken with the 8th pick Arizona may well look back with some regret though Preston had the better season of the two, helping the Cardinals to an 8-8 record. Reuben is solid in most categories but not outstanding in any (58/58 rating). He did start all 16 games intercepting 4 passes (34 yards in returns) while defending another 13. He recorded a PDPct of 79.4 while allowing 52 passes to be caught. He did make 72 solo tackles and added a further 10 assists as he proved to be solid against the run as well. Add in the 18 kick-off returns for a 24.8 avg and it was a decent campaign. One area where Preston is really good is as a punishing hitter and the four forced fumbles (recovered one) is a testament to his strength here.

5. Philadelphia Eagles –FS Kelvin SheltonThe selection of Shelton so early raised a few eye brows but his current rating of 83/83 the highest of any rookie in the class shows what an inspired pick he was. Shelton helped the Eagles

90

Page 91: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

to their first playoff appearance since 2008. He started 15 of the 16 games during the regular season picking off 4 passes (11 return yards) while defending another 11. Shelton did allow 40 catches but recorded an excellent 81.2 PDPct. Add the 53 solo tackles, 24 assists, 1 forced fumble and a recovery and it can be seen that he truly made a difference in Philadelphia.

6. New England Patriots –FL Earl O’NeilThe 6th overall pick saw O’Neill taken to give Leskanic a target other than Garcia. He has lots of the right attributes, though none outstanding to indicate he was worth taking so early. He did catch 66 passes for 699 yards and 2 TD’s. 5 drops and no fumbles showed a good pair of hands and excellent ball security. O’Neil’s longest reception was 44 yards, but he did not record a single 100-yard game and only caught 6 passes of 20+ yards. One other notable worry was that he only gained 70 yards after the catch, this in comparison to 183 for Wilkerson, and less than RB Faber, not the production expected from the 6th overall pick.

7. Los Angeles Raiders –RB Danny FaberThe Raiders wanted an offensive star to show off as they moved to Los Angeles. The result was the drafting of Faber (59/59) who was a decent pick-up. Not that this helped as the Raiders 3-13 finished the season with the number one draft pick for this up and coming draft. Danny did run for 1029 yards (4.29 avg.) and 8 TD’s. He had one 100-yard day and recorded 21 runs of 10+ yards with a longest of 26. One worry was the four fumbles so he will need to learn to keep the ball tighter as he meets contact. Out of the backfield he caught 29 passes for 197 yards and 1 TD (only 1 dropped pass), with a longest gain of 40 yards and he actually recorded 77 yards after making the catch.

8. Denver Broncos – CB Peter BernardWith the pick obtained from Chicago for 1.29, 2.18, 2.21 and 7.10 the Denver organisation will be more than happy with the trade as it allowed them to draft a top draw CB. Bernard is the 2nd highest rated player out of this draft and is the 3rd highest

91

Page 92: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

rated CB in the league (81/81). Bernard started all 16 games picking off 3 passes and defending 7, while he allowed 41 catches he did record a 77.7 PDPct. Add in his 52 solo tackles and 16 assists, 1 forced fumble and 1 recovery it was a good rookie season that promises more for the future despite the Broncos terrible year (3-13).

9. New Jersey Jets –SILB Grady RhodesGrady was moved to MLB by the Jets as they look to continue to run a 4-3 defense. Rhodes had such a good enough year that he was voted defensive rookie of the year, making 121 solo tackles and being invoved with a further 36 assists. Add in the 3.5 sacks, 1 blocked pass and 3 hurries to the 2 defended passes and 4 forced fumbles he was all over the field making plays, which was exactly what the Jets were looking for with this selection. Rhodes has the endurance to start every game (16 in his rookie season) as well as be a top special teams contributor if required, if he can reach his full potential he will be one of the top 4 ILB’s in the RDFL.

10. Cincinnati Bengals –LDE Tony RobertsonThe Titans didn’t see anyone they wanted to spend a number 10 pick on so traded this spot to the Bengals for DE Mack Garner and a 2015 1st round pick. Cincinnati wasted no time in selecting the DE out of Vanderbilt. Robertson is an excellent pass rusher, though only recorded 4.5 sacks in his 14 games. The DE did add 3 blocked passes, 5 hurries and 4 QBKd’s in 2014 as well as making 22 solo tackles and 17 assists. The one knock on Tony was endurance but as long as he is used wisely then he will be making big plays for years to come.

Who’s the #1 Number 1?

2005 DT Kris Jenkins (Minnesota)The first player ever picked in the RDFL went on to play 90 games starting 88. Made 392 solo tackles and 134 assists. Add in 18 sacks, 53 hurries, 11 blocked passes, 9 forced fumbles and 5 recovered. He played 6 season before retiring and was the 2006 All-League 1st Team Defensive Tackle.

2006 T Joseph MacCracken (St Louis)Probably the biggest bust of all 1st selections made in RDFL history to this point. He started all 16 games in his rookie season recording 15 KRB’s and only allowing 3 sacks. He was injured after 2 games in 2007 and missed all of 2008. He did fight back to start 11 of 16 games in 2009 where he recorded 10 KRB’s but

93

Page 94: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

allowed 7 sacks. A foot injury in 2010 meant he started 8 of 13 games and the following season despite playing in 16 games didn’t start a single one. He was picked up by the Texans as a free agent in 2012 but was released during preseason and retired.

2007 FL Dean Delvalle (Carolina)The Panthers got a good WR with this pick but not the player they hoped would help turn this franchise into a constant winner. He played 6 seasons for the Panthers, his best season was in 2009 where he caught 78 passes for 1304 yards and 12 TD’s as he was an All-League 2nd Team Wide Receiver. He had another good season the following year (63 for 1042, 10 TD’s) but his production fell as the Panthers struggled. In 2013 he was traded to the Rams for 2015 and 2016 1st round picks. It wasn’t a great first season as in week 8 Delvalle had a serious hamstring injury after catching 30 for 511 and 2 TD’s. 2014 saw an improved year as he grabbed 59 for 1068, 7 TD’s for a career best 18.1 yards per catch. This was his 3rd 1000-yard season in his career so far.

2008 QB Ernest Brewer (Atlanta)Ernest Brewer is probably the other candidate to be regarded as a bust. He has already played for 4 teams after being selected by Atlanta. In his rookie season he started 11 of 13 games passing for 1974 yards, 12 TD’s and 20 INT’s. He will be remembered as being the reason that the Falcons didn’t use the 1st overall pick the next year on another QB called Vance so traded out of the pick, how the fans may wish to have had that decision reversed. In his 2nd season he started 3 of 7 games due to injury. He looked better in 2010 as he started and played 15 games passing for 2457 yards, 18 TD’s and 9 picks. However GM Beargrowlz wanted to go in a different direction and traded him to Indianapolis for WR Stratton and a 3rd round pick. 2011 was not good to Ernest as he played back up to Roethlisberger throwing only 14 passes all season. The 2012 offseason saw another move as he went to St Louis for a 4th round pick in 2012

94

Page 95: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

and a 2nd in 2013. Here Brewer started 15 games passing for a career best 3240 yards. He connected on 16 TD’s while being intercepted 8 times. The Rams selected Sammie Stokes in the 1st

round in 2013 and Brewers days were numbered in St Louis. He did start 3 of 5 games but the following offseason saw a move to Kansas for 3rd and 5th round picks. Here he started 10 of 11 games passing for 2132 yards, 17 TD’s and 5 picks for a career best 90.6 rating.

2009 QB Justin Vance (Seattle)Three, that is the number that matters for Vance, he has 3 championship rings, 3 RDFL Bowl MVP awards. He was the League MVP in 2011 the same season he was also the All-League 1st Team Quarterback. Not bad for a player who attempted 2 passes in his rookie season. Vance started 13 games in 2010 completing 70% of his passes for 3459 yards, 23 TD’s and 18 picks. However he was just warming up. 4101 yards, 38 TD’s and 6 INT’s in 2011 as he took Seattle to the RDFL bowl, as they became champions to end many years of hurt for the Seahawks. 2012 was even more successful for Vance as an individual as he completed 71.3% of his passes for 3866 yards, 44 TD’s and 7 INT though the Seahawks fell just short of the bowl game. 2013 saw Vance miss 5 games due to a foot injury but he came back to lead Seattle to the title again as he completed 73.4% of his passes and ended the year with an amazing 122.6 QB Rating. In the playoffs that year he passed for 691 yards, 8 TD’s and no picks. Then there was shock as Vance had performance issues in the offseason and Seattle decided that he was not the player that could take them back to a third title. So in week2 of the 2014 season he was traded to the Texans for QB Joseph and a 3rd round pick. If the Seahawks thought he was finished they were to be badly mistaken. Despite only playing 9 games he passed for 2186 yards and 18 TD’s (7 INT’s) as Houston secured the number one seed in the AFC. In the playoffs he was unstoppable passing for 734 yards, 9 TD’s (2 INT’s) as the Texans won the RDFL bowl and Vance joined the a select band of players who had won 3 rings.

95

Page 96: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

2010 QB Vince Palmer (Dallas)Palmer was the big hope for the Cowboys as they looked to build a winner. After a rough rookie season where he started 13 games passing for 1922 yards, 7 TD’s (16 INT’s) he became one of the best QB’s in the league. For the next 4 seasons he recorded at least a 102 QB rating and was the 2014 All-League 2nd Team Quarterback. In 5 seasons as a Cowboy Palmer started 73 games, passing for 17,112 yards, 75 TD’s, 3 INT’s for a career rating of 101.6. In 2012 and 2014 he passed for over 4000 yards, with 4402 yards in 2014. In fact he threw 41 TD passes in the same season. His 2013 QB rating of 126.1 is a single season record as is the 76.8% completion percentage the same year. In the last 3 seasons the Cowboys have reached the playoffs but never progressed further than the divisional round so during the 2015 offseason the Cowboys decided to rebuild their aging roster and were offered an amazing deal by Atlanta who still regretted not haven taken Vance in 2009. The Falcons offered QB Robbie Reed and LT Everett Branch. On top of this there were more draft picks than anyone has every seen, all 7 Atlanta picks from both 2016 and 2017 seasons as well as 2015, 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th round picks.

2011 QB Tyrus Garrison (San Diego)For the 4th season in a row a QB was taken with the first overall pick. Garrison was certainly worth it. He started only 6 of 16 games in his rookie season completing 71.6% of his passes for 1469 yards, 11 TD’s and 3 INT’s (105.0 QB rating). He followed that up with a 4649 yard season (40 TD’s and 8 picks) and 112.1 rating as he was the All-League 2nd Team Quarterback in only his 2nd season. In 2013 and 2104 he has missed 3 games though still passed for 4198 and 3537 yards in each season. His lowest QB rating for a season was 2013 with 103.2 and he has a career mark of 108.4 having thrown 115 TD's and only 23 picks in those 4 seasons. The 1st two seasons saw the Chargers miss out on the playoffs in the final week as they ended their seasons 9-7. However 8-8 in 2013 was good enough for the division

96

Page 97: RDFL RedZone: 2015 Pre-Draft Edition

crown as was 11-5 in 2014 though both seasons saw wildcard round defeats to the Bills.

2012 T Emmanuel Everett (Arizona)The Cardinals decided to use the first overall pick on the best tackle out of college and Everett has not disappointed yet. He has missed playing time in his first two seasons (4 games each year) due to injury. Despite this he recorded 15 (34.1%) and 30 (40.5%) KRB’s in his first two seasons he allowed 9 sacks during the same time span. In 2014 he played all 16 games and recorded 41 KRB’s (37.3%), 5 pancakes while allowing 6 sacks as he became an All-League 1st Team Tackle.

2013 T Terrell Flannery (Detroit)Flannery was a RT in college but was switched to the left side as soon as he signed his contract. He had an amazing 1st season, as he was an All-League 1st team tackle. During his rookie season he recorded 38 KRB’s (45.2%), 3 pancakes while allowing only 3 sacks. He missed one start in 2014 as he had a small slump registering 32 KRB’s (38.1%), 5 pancakes and allowing 6 sacks.

2014 DE Bernie Bridges (St Louis)He started 13 games in his rookie season making 34 tackles and 21 assists. He did add 2.5 sacks, 12 hurries and 1 blocked pass. Add in 2 forced fumbles and he has something to build on.

Who’s the #1 number 1?

You’ll have to decide……
